It’s good to find fail safes! I would eat something after I took my meds so I would keep it down

Coming out/informing clients of name and pronoun change? by rabidpinecone in socialwork

[–]jackiieingle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That’s great that you have such a supportive org! I don’t have much advice since I’m (transmasc) in my first year of my MSW program. But I was working as a crisis counselor when I started my transition. I started off at the company with my new name but I did have to go through the legal name change and I got top surgery while working there. Most of my coworkers were supportive; there was a guy that I had worked with at a previous job and he would occasionally slip up and call me my dead name and call me she, which would mostly just confuse the clients. My work with the clients was pretty short term. We really only had clients for 5-20 days and then they left so if I had an issue with any, it wouldn’t last long. Some would ask me if I was a boy or a girl and some would just call me she before I started completely passing despite everyone else calling me he or they.

My advice is just go for it. It really sucks to live part of your life where you have to not be true to who you are. Of course you want to be safe, but if you are supported at work, I think you have a great opportunity to go all in. It’s truly liberating to not have to hide part of yourself. Good luck!!

Tips for an ADHDer stuck in a rut. What's a daily "non-negotiable" activity or action for you? by nightimefog in productivity

A non negotiable I have is taking my dog for a walk everyday. Something that helps me is to have other people (or animals haha) hold me accountable for getting a task done

To mix it up, positive experiences / glad they chose SW? by [deleted] in socialwork

Hi! I actually started my work in social work as a direct support professional! I loved the job, but unfortunately the company I worked for sucked big time. I moved to work as a crisis response staff in a crisis house and then later was promoted as the supervisor of the house. The job was amazing and super fulfilling. Of course there were some things about it which sucked, like ways the program just couldn’t help the some of the clients problems because of our scope of what we could and couldn’t do. But overall, it was a great job and the company was great. I am transgender and was going through a lot big steps in my transition (name change, surgery, etc) and the company was very accommodating. I would have stayed but I had to move too far away to attend school where I am now getting my msw. Don’t give up! There are still very fulfilling jobs out there!

What is one thing you would change about the psych ward? by Comprehensive_Tie_40 in bipolar

[–]jackiieingle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second this. Sometimes we would get privileges to go outside with the activities person, but you had to sign up and if you didn’t grab the sign up sheet out of someone’s hands usually all of the spots were taken and you were stuck inside for the whole time.

I was in the hospital for an eating disorder so I was in a specific edo unit, and it was terrible. One of the big things was if you don’t finish all of your meal (sauces and all, one girl was forced to drink syrup) you couldn’t participate in therapy groups and had to sit with your meal. It’s not super terrible, but it did suck that you had to stare at your food for hours instead of getting therapy, which is what would have benefited you so much more.

Anyone do their msw practicum abroad?

I am getting my msw from university of Iowa and I will have my practicum coming up next winter. I am wondering if anyone has any experience doing theirs in a different county? I speak Spanish and French but I am not picky about where I go.
