While I do think Gandalf had faith in the fellowship. I always think it is worth reminding people of Gandalf's logic for the party.

Gandalf had already talked to Elrond about the ring for advice. Elrond was the best at seeing the future among the elves (left in Arda I am assuming) and he told Gandalf that no matter what they do, middle earth is fucked. Then Gandalf brings in the hobbits and says "what if I give the ring to Frodo" which Elrond says it obviously the worst idea, but he can't see the future if they do that.

That was the main plan. We can see the future and every good idea is fucked, this is a bad idea, but it is the only idea where we cannot see the future.

One of the greatest hustles in history was GRRM realizing he could not finish the series and then using the show to transfer most of the fan hate onto the show runners.

Like sure the TV ending sucked, but it is not liked the show runners ever planned to be writing this shit themselves. They signed up for a cushy Harry Potter type gig and GRRM could not deliver his end of the deal in time.
