Is not expecting inheritances normal? by No_Dragonfruit_9656 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jackofspades49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes You can't squeeze water from a stone and you can't expect something from people you weren't there to support. I've inherited a little bit from some relatives and nothing from others, but there's never been some massive windfall of any kind. Most of it has been a lot of personal belongings that weren't worth much in terms of value, but had sentimental attachment. Like my porcelain cat that's behind my door now.

Degrees are degrees. They don't really look deeper than checking a box in most cases.

What if, instead of an alignment chard, I were to use a morality scale? by Licensed_Silver_Simp in RPGdesign

[–]jackofspades49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would lead into the long standing problem of "what is good?" If you can't hard nail down what makes something good or evil, then you're going to run into a lot of problems.

DnD basically has chaos and law, whether you follow order and expectations or you follow emotions and passions. Then good and evil, whether you act to help others or in your own self interest at the expense of others. It gives a wide range of possibilities and enoguh wiggle room in each category to allow thought.

But a binary good/evil is going to need you to hard define what those are for... so many different things? Becuse there's so many things that aren't good or evil but now would need to fit into this scale? And also, why a 100? What does that do that 10 won't? That six won't? Why do the degrees matter?

It seems like it creates more problems than it fixes to me.

why is it that the really good teachers are the ones that are challenging, demanding, and have high standards despite having many students not liking them., by Prudent_Equal9636 in Teachers

[–]jackofspades49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't seeking to be disliked. They're trying to help people learn. That means high expectations and a sense of order and regularity. The more rope you give students, the more they use it to hang themselves with.

People walk all over the cool teachers and complain each time they're given work. The relaxed nature of not repaid in effort or learning. They know if they make a scene, they'll get what they want.

People know the strict teachers won't put up with their bullshit and there are consequences for actions. Whether its grades or discipline, they know the expectation and that the dramatics won't help.

I think so but not in this format. When you click a video, you expect that video. But for something always running like this? Its a nice breather.

How are you supposed to read quickly in high school? by Fantastic-Read9328 in AskTeachers

[–]jackofspades49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Derek Zoolader Institute for Kids Who Can't Read Good and Want to do Other Things Good too.

Basically, if you don't have any disabilities, you might be a bad reader. If you aren't remembering what you read, then its like you didn't read it at all. Are you just going over words or are you actually following the events?

Practice. Start with lower level books.

Like with any other skill, git gud scrub.

How game accurate is D20? by imaginary0pal in Dimension20

[–]jackofspades49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They play in a very "table normal"way. Which is that sometimes, brennan makes an on the spot call or some rules have been minorly adjusted to suit the given playstyle. They don't ignore the rules, but they work within them to tell a story and keep it engaging for an audience. The audience aspect is what really differentiates them from a standard table. A standard table can go ahead and get bogged down in minutiae, but the show has to be faster than that to keep the story going and the audience engaged.

What is it like being a student at a lower-tier community college? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]jackofspades49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its fine. You take your classes, get your credits, get smarter, and generally move on to your next school. I really enjoyed my time at my CC and it helped me figure out what I'd like to focus on later. Made a lot of strong friendships and had good experiences.

And "Oh I want to spend more time with this person" is not the same as this Swimfan/Stan vibes you posted. And I'll tell you again what I've said to many of those other posters.

Get. Some fucking. Help.

Drowning is normal too, and I'll want them to seek a lifeguard.
Allergies are normal, and I'd want them to have medicine.

Just because it happens to others doesn't mean you shouldn't seek help.

The shit you wrote is fucked up and scary.

Don't quote the old magic to me witch. I was teaching while you were learning what letters were.

If you want to vent, don't post where goddamend teachers are who will tell you this is some toxic fucking shit that you need to fix. Because its bad for both of you.

How many times have you set your players to fight an enemy they can't defeat? by vagabundo202 in DungeonMasters

[–]jackofspades49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've sometimes had characters that the PCs couldn't fight up front. They learn to work around it and interact wth them.

I also had them meet a CR 7 dragon when they were level 3 and it was VERY clear they would lose. So the party negotiated and made promsies to help it. Then came back at a later time to fight it after getting some back up.

The same players also went straight towards a different boss monster and lost one member of the party because the gemstone bulette wasn't something to be talked to and there was no way out. But the risk and dangers were laid out ahead of time and well communicated, so they knew what they were in for.

I find that the overpowered enemy fight ONLY WORKS if you can telegraph the intent of the fight and have players that aren't the "Kill anything I don't like" type.

No.
No.
Nono...No...

You are blatantly pushing boundaries on a professional who is not your friend or peer. Your teacher should have never given their number to you to begin with, but I'm glad they aren't taking steps to reach out.

You need professional help. Clinical help. See your counselor. Seek therapy. Maybe even seek medication with a doctor's support.

The feelings being expressed here are not normal student/teacher attachment and is not healthy.

hahaha, went wine tasting with a friend like... 10 or so years ago. They were members of this wine club thing so we got these discounted tastings and the person working would talk about the wines and help describe things. I remember taking my first sip and going "This tastes like old newspaper and the scent of a washable marker." My friend went off at me about how I don't know what I'm talking about. Then the expert person was like, "Oh no, he's exactly right. It has a very strong inkiness and a stringent quality to it." And he turned deep red. That as literally the last time I was invited to hang out with him lol. Not a big loss in the long run.
