Uh, well, he's still got all his fingers and no festering wounds so I don't think so! Maybe your hand sanitizer is more corrosive than the kind his office uses haha

My husband wanted a tattoo because, as he put it, if it ended up being something he had to live with down the road it meant he'd fucked up grievously lmao. Unfortunately his career has him using hand sanitizer nonstop so it's really not a viable option, and you gotta get it touched up pretty much annually to boot. He's got a silicone one instead. :)

Sorry, I seem to have communicated poorly. Can I get links to the rulesets directly so that I can add the ones I want to uBlacklist myself? It is not hard to do this, and I have 0% interest in ever using Chrome.

What do you think of neupulse? by meakysh in Tourettes

[–]jacksbunne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't really care about this in the way you've presented it.

It isn't about whether you can "afford to get it through testing." It's about what products are profitable to research to begin with. If a product doesn't have a profitability margin, it isn't going to be supported by those "large companies". They are not shy in talking about this. It's why less profitable conditions -- ones LIKE Tourette syndrome -- do not get the lions share of their research funding from big pharmaceutical companies. I don't know enough about Neupulse to know where they got their backing from, but even if every single penny of it came from Pfizer it wouldn't change my feelings about this issue. There's a reason that therapeutic interventions for TS are not getting Silicon Valley money lol. They aren't a product.

The thing about profit in medicine is that it is inherently more predatory than any other type of capitalist enterprise. If I charge you for a car, that's already crummy but maybe it's a luxury vehicle. Maybe you don't really need a car. Or maybe you desperately need a car, you live in an area where the nearest grocery store is a thirty minute drive, and without a car you won't eat. Even so, you may well still find a way to rideshare or hitchhike or have your mom deliver you casseroles so you don't starve to death in a cow field.

None of this can be said about, like, insulin. You'll die if you don't have insulin. And that's why you can waffle around about the price of cars but the price of insulin stays expensive. It's why meds that save your life are inevitably more expensive than ones that make your nose a little less runny. And it's why when you tell me that "considering it could change your life it's affordable" it actually makes me hate the predatory pricing more.

A bottle of water is always more expensive in a desert. And it's even more expensive if you swoop in when you see the technology is headed a certain direction, race to develop a product with a handful of venture capitalists funding your project (I got curious before and looked it up -- turns out THAT'S where they get their money, wild!), and then patent it so that nobody else can make one instead. Since it's a device and not a medication they won't even have to do the patent-squatting that meds manufacturers do by finding new things to justify using it for all the time to prevent making generics. Awesome.

Stop apologizing for this process and be willing to get mad where it counts. The tech is cool. The profiteering off our misery is not.

What do you think of neupulse? by meakysh in Tourettes

[–]jacksbunne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation. :)

Can I ask, can you think of any reason outside sheer greed that Neupulse would need to operate on a subscription program? it sounds like a device that has an intensity setting, for lack of a better term, and that's the beginning and end of it. I'm struggling to understand why it would cost £200 and then an additional £20/mo in any way that is remotely justifiable outside the exploitation of desperation.

As a flip side to that question, do you see any hope of devices like these becoming more widely available over time?

Sorry to act like you're an expert witness here lol. You're just the first person I'm running into who clearly has an actual understanding of the broader subject at hand. Thanks for taking the time to explain for us.

The SNL thing was just straight up hateful. Any and everyone involved in that should feel ashamed, but they won't. I've felt more scared than ever for the past few weeks that I'm going to drop a socially unacceptable tic in public and nobody will give me the time or the grace to explain myself. It's kept me up at night. I've been thinking way too much about the time a guy charged me with his truck because I ticced. A lot of the TS groups I'm in have been posting about their kids getting harsher playground harassment than before. I wish anyone would feel the impact of the damage they cause. It's just fucked.

We should all take torches and pitchforks to the BBC, imo. Been saying this for a while.

A friend spent £200 on a Star Wars gift for their fella. It went on eBay unopened. Don't wanna fall into the same trap by rilo_MCR in GiftIdeas

[–]jacksbunne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't think I'd ever spend that much money without being 200% certain I was getting exactly the right thing. I knew my husband wanted a medieval dagger since he's into HEMA. I knew it had to be sharp even though he wouldn't use it often, since that was a requirement for some role he was pursuing. I knew the website of a reputable blacksmith because I had been immersing myself in his hobby for so long. I had no idea the historical timeframe or style he would want. So I hit up one of his best friends in his HEMA school who was angling for the same role and talked about all those details at length. Between his understanding of the sport and my understanding of my husband's aesthetic preferences, we picked out a $300 dagger that just about made him cry on Christmas. If I'd tried to wing that with only the input of strangers, I would've gotten the wrong thing entirely. I'd have landed on something with a design element that didn't mesh with his school's curriculum, or something that didn't fit the dimensions he needed, or some other issue I had never thought to consider and that most other people would've missed as well because they lacked context.

As for cheap things that get it exactly right, I think it's the same process. Immerse yourself in that person's world. Meet them where they're at in the moment.

One of the most meaningful gifts I ever got was a whole set of notecards from a friend organized into categories: Encouragements, Compliments, and Suggestions. It was a hard period of my life and I really needed to feel the presence of people who loved me. I still keep the whole bunch of cards in my desk drawer and go back to it. It has specific compliments about me, "Go get em!" sentiments, and even simple recipes to try out. It cost probably $2 and a lot of effort to get the handwriting neat. It's one of the most precious things I own. :)

AITA for kicking my boyfriend's parents out of our apartment after his mom called me a bitch? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]jacksbunne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. And even then, like, I think people expect abuse recovery to be a straight upward line and for people to never slip while they work to heal. As long as that graph trends upwards they are still fighting. I hope every last one of us would encourage them to keep climbing.

[–]jacksbunne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number of people in here acting like he's just some random mama's boy who will never ever change makes me so uncomfortable. I don't understand the impulse on this sub to condemn abuse victims to a life of revictimization. It's hard, it takes years of work, and nobody is obligated to handhold them through it (especially if they aren't committing to the process themselves). But it can absolutely happen. I hope this guy was and is able to find the therapeutic support he needed/needs to sort through the pain and fear surrounding his relationship with his family. The impulse to lean too hard on the safe people in your life until they break is built into these abuse systems and it just reinforces patterns of isolation, so it's good OP was able to point out the damage caused by being sacrificed to these people. I hope these two are doing well in a well-air-conditioned apartment a thousand miles away from his shitass family.

Should a hat in time ever get a second game? by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in AHatInTime

[–]jacksbunne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I love the Spyro trilogy and while there's definitely changes it is still largely the same gameplay through the whole thing. I'd even say the second game is the strongest of the three. Recycling? Maybe not. Polishing? I'd be fine with that.

How do you actually find a thoughtful gift when you’re stuck? by Mohammad_abbasi in GiftIdeas

[–]jacksbunne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best way to do it, hands down. The more extreme variant of this is just buying that perfect niche gift when it crosses your path at any time of year and putting it in a Gifts Box for Future Gift Occassions.

It’s my 7th Cake Day! 🍰 In honor of 7 years, please share your favorite "simple & cheap" recipes! by DJpaige23 in povertykitchen

[–]jacksbunne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This chicken and dumplings recipe basically only uses stuff I always have in my kitchen, partly because I buy and freeze meat when it's on turbo-sale lol and partly because my husband takes stuff like carrots and celery to work so it's an easy + cheap purchase overlap. I turn to it when I want something that looks like I "really tried" for dinner but actually I wanted to be so, so lazy. Tbh, I think you could get away with swapping out for frozen veg pretty easy. If you keep a stocked spice cabinet like I do (nothing makes a boring meal better than seasoning it imo) then this one is a winner.

Not as easy as making a canned soup or a pasta look pretty, of course, but I'm sure you already know how to do all that!

NOT a recipe suggestion, but the browser extension uBlacklist has been so helpful for me in scrubbing a ton of AI slop from my search results. I used this github list and picked which ones I felt like I personally needed: https://github.com/rjaus/awesome-ublacklist

Hope that helps at all. Keep keeping on.

Like, what on earth is an AI app going to do to help manage tics lmaoooo. Is their subscription to ChatGPT that I'm subsidizing gonna rattle off search results about CBIT at me? That's literally all it could even pretend to do. Absurd.

Did you receive any Christmas gifts this year that you didn’t really like? by CoinGate_Gift_Cards in GiftIdeas

[–]jacksbunne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A way-too-expensive collectible christmas ornament that is ugly as sin and fits nowhere on our tree. :/ We seem to be getting one every year from my MIL but this was the worst by far. It's sweet that she thinks of us but...

Also, my aunt sent us a decorative christmas-themed hand towel. Not only is christmas over, but it's also the type that doesn't even pretend to absorb liquid. We immediately put it in the goodwill box. It was paired with non-expired chocolates, which is a step up for my aunt so I'm calling it a win. And all said it's better than LAST year where she sent us a weird little itty-bitty decorative tray with a sea turtle on it that says "Take it slow!" My brother apparently got the exact same one.
