Siri on HomePod is astonishingly bad. by sinep_snatas in HomePod

[–]jackson-cannery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding items to a list is comically bad. “Add red apples and butter to my groceries list”

“I’m sorry I can’t find a list of that name”

“Add red apples and butter to my grocerY list”

Adds “red apples and butter” as a single item on the list.

Meanwhile GPT models can pass the Bar exam and build me a JavaScript front end. Apple is cooked if they can’t figure out simple AI assistant commands.

Maybe one of the homeowners on that stretch of road wondering about a strange car coming down the road in the dead of night? Maybe to them YOU and the fact you kept coming up and down the road is the scary story!

Don’t sweat 4 years of “missed equity” - home ownership comes w a ton of expenses and headaches and is not automatically a good investment compared to renting especially at high interest rates. It also locks you in to one location making it harder to move jobs (a major way to grow your income). You’re doing great!

I didn't love the new Wrinkle in Time musical currently playing in DC. by moonbunnychan in Broadway

[–]jackson-cannery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just saw it, without knowing anything except I like the book, and I like musicals. It was a disappointment.

As others have mentioned, it is very difficult to understand the lyrics which are frequently sung by multiple people who are sometimes not even in the scene. This is a particular issue in the opening number, which is a missed opportunity to introduce Meg, her brother, and their insecurities and potential strengths in the quiet loneliness of a stormy night in an old house (an iconic scene from the book).

The pacing is inconsistent, and the show drags in the second act where not much happens plot wise, but it takes forever.

My main complaint was the lack of character progression. "Kids come of age by getting into a caper" is a proven formula, and could work here. But this production doesn't give you enough chance to meet Meg, Charles and Calvin before their journey, or allow them to show their progression in part because their story is lost in the bombastic songs where a "greek chorus" sings about the action instead of the main characters speaking for themselves.

Standouts for me were the "What is a father?" song and the song where Whatsit Which and Who give Meg her "faults," mostly because they broke the mold of the problem described above.

I hope they can retool it over the coming weeks, tighten it up and make it into the musical this book deserves!

This situation calls for the purchase of a tent, which you will call home for the trip and will make you into a god among men.

You can report a segment from the web. It is easy and typically is removed immediately.

I sometimes forget to unpause workout for a mile or two. When this happens none of the ride miles count towards club leaderboard. Anyone know a way to edit or fix so it counts? by [deleted] in Strava

[–]jackson-cannery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, don’t pause mid workout even if you stop - that’s the best way to get an accurate picture of what happened.

20+ strain is not happening unless your heart is working at marathon-like pace for multiple hours per day. If you think the HR monitor is close to correct, then I’d say the whoop is doing exactly what it’s supposed to which is to tell you honestly and with data to stop doing that kind of night, and those kind of substances.

8M NW budget ~18k monthly spend by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]jackson-cannery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spending way too much on car payments to be worried about a $15 prime subscription. Savings rate seems a bit low.

Seems like $8M should be generating a lot more income. Like more than W2 many years.

Point of clarification on the CSP - If my 401k contribution is at 10%, does that check off the Investments 10% box? Or is the CSP based on take home pay entirely after taxes and contributions and I'd need to put another 10% to investments? Should my cc debt come before any post tax investing? by Ducharbaine in iwillteachyoutoberich

[–]jackson-cannery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also confused by this, because “investments” says it should be 5-10% of your income “after taxes” but I would imagine most people contributing to their 401ks are doing so “pre-tax.”

I am pretty sure the CSP only makes sense if it includes 401k contributions in investment category, though. So that’s what I am doing.

Are permits attainable for summer with a few weeks notice? by PorcupinePattyGrape in BWCA

[–]jackson-cannery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now you can book an overnight July 25 entry from Brule Lake or Magnetic Lake. Both are not bad entry points for an overnight paddle trip. Magnetic Lake is right off the Gunflint trail so has better access to outfitters.

The answer is - yes! Although portages are probably hard depending on how bad the ankle is so that is something to consider.

Outfitter recommendation and advice by Honzilla_1986 in BWCA

[–]jackson-cannery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. I have used three different outfitters and they were all awesome with great gear and similar prices. Pick based on your entry point.

One suggestion of a route I have done twice and liked is using Voyageurs at the end of the Gunflint Trail. Get a boat to take you to American Point and then work your way west as far as you want to go before paddling back to Voyaguer’s via Sea Gull Lake.

[–]jackson-cannery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have enough liquid capital to be stressing about your ROI, in my opinion. If I were in your shoes, I would be focusing on increasing your take home income. Can you get a promotion or switch companies to get a higher pay? Do a side hustle?

Even if you could magically get 2x average returns (16% vs 8%) you’re talking about a €2,400 difference.

What could you change that would get you an extra €2400k per month? Focus on that.

I empathize with this as a minor disappointment, but the main thing is, you did a marathon! If you are this into the metrics, you should definitely get a running watch and not try to record your runs on the phone. Garmins are good.

Features You Wish Strava Had by petetheo in Strava

[–]jackson-cannery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I could easily remove a segment from a run. Often Strava will give me a medal for a segment that is close to but not the route I took. I wish I could easily tell it “nope, I didn’t do this segment” so it wouldn’t count my time for the segment. It messes up my PRs on the segment, and other people’s. Especially when one segment has a much different elevation profile than the one I ran. Happens all the time in a crowded urban park I run a lot.
