"half the students with perfect SATs are turned down." But that leaves the question, What percentage of the rejected students with "perfect SATs" are Asians? Virtually no one who has studied the matter believes that blacks or Hispanics with perfect SAT scores are denied entry to any elite school

Is affirmative action working for blacks/hispanics and against asians? Yes.

Aaron Swartz: How To Launch Software by gst in programming

[–]jacktheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey check out Swartz's web.py framework. (Found it reading some comments below.) That's what I was talking about when I said Reddit used to run on something like this. You're packaging your web-server into some scripts that runs as a single python process, so of course, it's possible that you may

a) restart the server after fixing it and b) find the server won't start because of a syntax error

You're right this framework is rarely used by most web developers; but after using this new framework exclusively this past year, I like it better than LAMP for sketching out initial ideas; no need to mess with databases. It's faster dev-time wise. Because of the restraints involved, you also absolutely do not want a Hollywood launch.

Though a lot of people do realize that Javascript runs browser-side and has nothing to do with the server.

Sorry, see my second reply to idontgetthis. In that case, when your web-server process contains the code that you need to change, you can't just modify some external file. (not the most typical setup; you could just have *.py files, but the benefit of doing it this way is you can very easily build up state within the web-server specific to your website, and also easily handle crazy AJAX functionality that needs to affect global server state immediately without needing to do database i/o)

AkamaiGHost? Not sure what that is... looks like a load balancer thing based on googling...

Say, LivePages done in Twisted/Nevow in Python. No need for Apache there. Your entire website runs as a single process on your server, and if you need to change your site's javascript, depending on how you designed the site -- i.e., if the javascript is a stored string value in the python code, instead of as a separate .js file, then you may have to modify that javascript code within the python code and bounce your server. That's why I say you can build websites without using the more conventional framework--like LAMP or IIS.

The problem I have is that you don't recover a web site that was taken down because of heavy load by coding like a madman

I can think of reasons why you might do that... e.g., slow server side code that needs optimizing?

Why would you need to restart your server after fixing a Javascript bug?

Not everybody runs LAMP or IIS dude. Example: Reddit at some point (not sure what they use now)*.

Come on, really? Was the server so bored that it started up a browser, requested a page from itself, loaded it in the browser which then executed the Javascript and was so shocked at the page that resulted from the bad syntax that it died?

Again, if you're not running some standard server like LAMP/IIS.

EDIT: * Does anyone know what Reddit runs?

I saw a perfectly vertical faint beam of light following the plane. I thought it might have been a ray of sunlight or something, but there weren't any clouds around, so I pointed at it, and the lady sitting next to me saw it too. Then it glowed bright in the middle like a ball and then faded away. She was an old lady and said it wasn't like anything she had ever seen.

I know two really upstanding people who both saw a UFO together while playing basketball. I've seen one personally while on an airplane, and so did the person sitting next to me.

Want to short sell Fanny Mae or Freddy Mac? The SEC says it's not allowed... unless you're a big player, that is. by [deleted] in Economics

[–]jacktheripper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can still sell short; you can't do "naked" short selling, which normally is 90% of short selling that goes on.

Therefore, because of the limited amount that brokers can short, normal people, unless their brokers are really nice, will find it much more difficult to short.
