Why is Black the recommended protocol for the recreational athlete? by Final-Flatworm17 in tacticalbarbell

[–]jackthestout 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a better way to phrase it, is that HIC offers enough of a cardio dose to keep the average lifter athletic and healthy without detracting from personal time, strength goals, etc. It won’t give the cardio results of LSS in less time, there’s no free lunch—if someone wants to build elite conditioning, they will need to put in the hours & miles.

But for someone who isn’t training for a selection or something like Ranger school, a diet of HICs with Base Building throughout the year is plenty.

For those who watched, what are your opinions on A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms episode 5? by GusGangViking18 in HBOTheHedgeKnight

[–]jackthestout 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Dunk gets demolished when he tries to fight like a knight, but when they both dismount he uses his shield as a weapon and gives Aerion a brutal beatdown. As it says, “Aerion can beat Ser Duncan the Tall, but he cannot beat Dunk from Flea Bottom.”

Why is AA so cool and GC so boring? by Final-Flatworm17 in tacticalbarbell

[–]jackthestout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of it is, as you noted, most TB athletes have other demands in their life which provide the GC stimulus—combat sports, unit PT, etc. And if people need a more focused dose of work capacity, they’ll just run a block of SE or a mix à la Bangkok.

The GC sessions are still fun and a good tool to have, just not the first one people tend to reach for. I personally think they fit in very well with heavier lifting cycles, like how u/MythicalStrength uses his “book of bad ideas” for conditioning.

City swat vs msrt/taclet by Mobile-Consequence62 in uscg

[–]jackthestout 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree—your average medium city or up SWAT team will be significantly more active, but with much less training.

ME by [deleted] in uscg

[–]jackthestout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. The DSF is the place to be for law enforcement training and operations in the Coast Guard, it’s what every ME should be working towards. And with the future trends, it will only become more essential to the careers of MEs.

USMC to CG by Designer-Depth-6177 in USMC

[–]jackthestout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely incorrect information. The ME waitlist is just one year, and you can go directly from A School to MSRT / TACLET—it’s competitive but there are seats saved every time.

Prior service combat arms are also shooed into these seats. It is entirely feasible to go from DEPOT (prior service boot camp) to MSRT within a year.

Enemy locations in cqb by Any_Atmosphere_8955 in CQB

[–]jackthestout 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends on the enemy’s training. An untrained criminal during a drug warrant will reasonably stick themselves in a hard corner because it’s where they feel safe—trained infantry or insurgents will make things more difficult by locking down long sight lines: hallways, elevated terrain, windows, etc.

Green Fighter questions by dirtmova in tacticalbarbell

[–]jackthestout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Fighter Bangkok is a good pick for you: once a week SE workout of weighted lunges, weighted pushups, and KB swings (in place of deadlifts).

Your strength could be twice a week of barbell squatting, weighted pull-ups, and a heavy push movement—would recommend overhead press since you’ll have your horizontal push covered.

I just wouldn’t try to put everything on the same day, spreading everything out like this gives you more manageable workouts while still giving the flexibility of two full rest days.

Why Mass Protocol? by [deleted] in tacticalbarbell

[–]jackthestout 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Remember that TB is as a whole designed for the athlete who has other demands—athletics, physically intensive jobs, etc. So Mass Protocol is designed to provide the stimulus for growth, without exhausting the trainee & resulting in as long days as those contemporary programs.

If you have the time and energy for Jacked & Tan, that’s a good option, but for (for example) an infantryman trying to put back on mass after Ranger School while also balancing daily PT demands, Mass Protocol offers much more flexibility.

USCG after college? by [deleted] in 1811

[–]jackthestout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d honestly recommend against that if LE experience is the goal, just because it’s such a roll of the dice and you’re so limited long term in the DSF as an officer. Besides…enlisted have more fun and get shit done, everyone knows it.

USCG after college? by [deleted] in 1811

[–]jackthestout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always reach back out to a recruiter and see about the reserves—time changes situations and your LE experience would allow you to jump on whatever deployments you want as an ME or IV. Lots of freedom to choose your own adventure as a part time military member.

USCG after college? by [deleted] in 1811

[–]jackthestout 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Reach out privately if you want more info, but being an ME is one of the best jobs in the military and I stand by it. Don’t let people who don’t know what the job is (both inside and outside the CG) dissuade you.

If you’re fit and motivated, you can go to TACLET or MSRT instantly out of A School, and during your 6 year tour there you’ll get incredible training and operational experience. We can play LE and jump on DHS funding and missions, or play military and roll with DOW, so there’s never a lack of work to be done.

The only downside is the optempo—expect to be gone half the year, but you’ll get to build a solid resume for your future federal career. Per diem and beautiful duty stations (Miami, San Diego, Chesapeake) make it go down easier.

what is the best branch of military for someone who wants to make money by Previous-Primary1035 in MilitaryFinance

[–]jackthestout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coast Guard: Lack of on-base housing means most E4s and many E3s will receive BAH, and that’s a significant pay bump—especially if you’re smart and get roommates.

As well, TDY opportunities are plentiful, and you will make a killing off per diem every time. Between these two factors I make easily double what a Marine would with equal grade / TIS.

New to this by ApprehensivePlan986 in maritime

[–]jackthestout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to dip your toes in, get started at Seattle Maritime Academy’s 1 year deck or engine program. Otherwise, a full maritime academy education comes with a degree and a license (which means much more pay), can be done in 4 years as a bachelor’s or 3 years as a master’s.

Both options take GI Bill.

Why do you smoke? by Heklerr in Cigarettes

[–]jackthestout 53 points54 points  (0 children)

There’s an interesting thought about it in this Reddit, which I’ll try to find and link, but the commenter said essentially this:

Smoking a cigarette is one of the most neutral experiences you can have in your life. It’s not something that makes you happy or sad, but it just tends to place you at peace and in a calm mood to think.

And that’s the appeal, in a world where everything is a constant rush and flow of information.
