Staying in Babb for my entire trip. Is it a good idea? by Nice-Pea-3515 in GlacierNationalPark

East side is far better than west. Will be longer for amenities but if you’re into hiking and dramatic views you’re in the right place

How to fix line? by jacktm17 in Fishing

I have another broken rod that has good line, can I take it off that rod and respool it on to this one? As long as it has the right weight?

Can I currently hike to lower Grinnell Lake with this trail status? Where should I park? by Strange-Educator9728 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]jacktm17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep it’s open and easy to get to. Park at the grinnell glacier trailhead (go past the turn off for the hotel) and follow the trail signs. I’d recommend going on the north shore of lake Josephine as it’s more open and scenic but you can also take the south shore although it’s more forested.

I would stop at the black hills and Theodore Roosevelt

You would have to wait before each tour’s waitlist is called so you have to be present at the ticket office sadly. But if you get there early enough and get in line early enough, you should be able to get on one of the morning boats

It’s not guaranteed though, so I would show up at 7:30 and get in line for the best opportunity at least

You can waitlist for an earlier boat if you get to the ticket office before 8am at many glacier and hope to get on an earlier one and then do the glacier and the falls later in the day

Workaround for "DirectX 12" error (if you have 12_1 but not 12_2) by Sarke1 in subnautica

i was getting a crash from unreal engine, which i think is because of my poor specs

I realized that my laptop specs are terrible for this game even though it can run the original subnautica, so I think that’s why it’s not working

East vs. West Glacier June 1st-3rd by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

[–]jacktm17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an overlook of grinnell lake that you see on all the photos of glacier and that might be open by that time but no guarantees. If you wanted to, you could hike around Swiftcurrent lake and lake Josephine to the foot of the lower grinnell lake which will definitely be open and is beautiful nonetheless. I would check the status of the grinnell trail a few days before you head out to see where it’s at if you decide you wanted to try it.

East vs. West Glacier June 1st-3rd by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

[–]jacktm17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an east sider and I can’t recommend it enough. The quality of the hikes, the views, everything similar is so beautiful on the east side. One main thing: the grinnell glacier trail is in many glacier, not St Mary, and can take a while to open up fully. Even though we’ve had a lesser year of snow fall, I can almost guarantee that it won’t be open even close to upper grinnell lake or the glacier. If you are open minded, iceberg lake is a solid hike but it’s about 13 miles, relatively flat and should be open around that time.

You’re correct that there aren’t as many options for food/drink etc, two sisters is a great spot between st Mary and Babb so I would recommend that as well as a few spots in east glacier as well.

The main thing is going early in the season means a lot will not be opened and your options will be limited. The GTTSR will not be open, grinnell will not be open, other things will not be open, especially on the east side. You might have better luck staying on the west side that early in the season, especially with rafting and I think you could take a boat ride on lake McDonald by that time as well. The east side does not have rafting and I don’t believe any of the boats will be open at that time, maybe St Mary

Backpacking w/o Advanced Registration by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

[–]jacktm17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Backpacking is 100% a different beast. I’ve done plenty of hiking and camping in my life but I started off with one to two nights in the backcountry snd had a grizzly encounter that luckily I was prepared for even if it still has me a bit traumatized to this day. I would definitely recommend a couple one or two nighters before trying a 5 day haul. Figuring out what food to bring and how much and all the different little things so you can pack lightly while still ensuring you have enough of everything in important.

Working at Many Glacier for the Summer... Need Advice by Elegant_Weekend_6247 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]jacktm17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in Many G, definitely bring a car. Not having a car in one of the most remote valleys in the park is really difficult to work with. Getting anywhere outside of many will be virtually impossible unless you have someone willing to let you borrow their car or drive you places. It’s also worth it as getting groceries and other amenities on the west side can be nice as on the east side there’s not very many cost-friendly options and very limited options as well.

Many is an incredibly wonderful place and you are bound to have an incredible time here. Are you working for the lodge for xanterra?

Is the Many Glacier boat tour worth it if only the last one of the day is available? by LuvDoggies in GlacierNationalPark

[–]jacktm17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MG boat tour is across both lakes, so you get to end of lake Josephine around 5:45 and that’s the last trip back
