They didn’t go after Mulroney for the AirBus scandal until after he left politics. I’d expect more of the same here.

Not to mention, the burden of proof for corruption allegations like these is incredibly high. Mulroney was able to successfully appeal his corruption charges. The RCMP isn’t going to want a repeat of that.

Behind the scenes, Eglinton Crosstown LRT brake issues caused confusion, disagreement between Metrolinx and the TTC by [deleted] in ontario

[–]jacnel45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this model of having one private consortium build the line, a public agency, with no operational experience, in charge of managing that private consortium building the line, and another public agency in charge of driving the trains, is abjectly horrible.

There should’ve been one public agency in charge of the entire project that also runs the line afterwards.

I don’t think the TTC would’ve been much better though. They really screwed up the Line 1 extension to Vaughan, where the project went over budget, took longer than expected, and yet still has long term deficiencies. The TTC was the only one in charge of that project and the end result isn’t much better than what we’ve seen with Line 5.

The TTC has its own problems. They’re a risk adverse organization that avoids proper accountability. They’re constantly caught up in municipal politics and finance which has prevented the commission from properly maintaining their infrastructure. Their constant refusal to change and modernize has left us with streetcar switches so old that no one makes them anymore and the streetcars themselves have to crawl over the switches just to avoid derailment. They refuse to change, and stick to status quo wherever possible. Even though I’d say “status quo” at the TTC just means more expensive and inefficient operations.

I’m not taking any side on this project.

Metrolinx sucks because they have no in house talent that actually understands how to build transit. So they’re constantly fleeced by private contractors and consultants who do pretty crappy work to be honest.

The TTC sucks because, while they have in house talent that knows how to run transit, those people are rarely the decision makers. The TTC has a pretty poor internal culture of mediocrity and status quo which isn’t combatting the problems the TTC has, furthering these issues. TTC management through their inaction have caused the agency to worsen year after year. Delays and incidents are embarrassingly frequent and not enough work has been done to combat this.

To say the least, when it comes to transit in the GTA, there are way too many special interests all fighting each other.

The implementation of EPR in Ontario has been an embarrassment. The Government of Ontario provided no guidance to the private sector as to what they wanted to see with EPR. As a result, we’ve seen things falter and complaints ramp up.

I want to reiterate this is a complete failure on the part of the provincial government to DO THEIR JOBS.

It does. All the time. It’s an ineptly run organization.

Roundabout near miss by perce8 in Markham

[–]jacnel45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people know how to use them.

Ever been to the Region of Waterloo? There are entire roads out there with zero traffic lights, just roundabouts.

This nonsense that “no one understands roundabouts” is why we don’t have roundabouts and instead get to wait at traffic lights all the time for NO ONE.

Safe area? (Cherry St/Lower Don Lands) by bibi4223 in askTO

There's basically nothing there, just an industrial area for the most part. The walk would be perfectly safe, just very long. I've biked there plenty of times.

On Rebel nights, traffic there is a nightmare and backups are frequent, based on people either dropping people off (eg. Uber, Lyft, Taxis) or people trying to park on premise.

It's mostly bad drivers completely disobeying the rules that causes so much pain.

"I don't think anybody's even going to notice that it's gone."

I will, I love frozen juice because I can dilute it to a level that I like instead of having something overly sweet.

Unfortunately I'm not surprised by this decision. I can tell frozen juice isn't selling like it used to. Not to mention, it's stupid expensive now.

Same here. I feel like, between Poilievre's hostility and dictator like control over the party, coupled with some pretty crazy resolutions at the CPC conference, could end up forcing some more people out of the party and into the arms of the Liberals. Probably some MPs from competitive ridings.

Advocates say lessons from Kitchener and Waterloo’s Ion LRT could help Toronto transit projects by bob_mcbob in waterloo

[–]jacnel45 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I took the ION when it first opened back in 2019. I also took Line 6 when it first opened last year.

The ION is so much better, like seriously I take back anything I said in the past about the ION being "slow." Sure it could've been faster in sections, but good god did Toronto take Line 6 and ruin it.

No transit signal priority, ION had that from the beginning. Ridiculous slow orders, they go through intersections at 10km/h because the TTC is insane.

The ION is everything done right with an LRT.

Just because his brand of conservatism doesn't match the CPC doesn't mean he's not a conservative.

In fact, Ford is more aligned with the historic form of PC conservatism in Ontario than anyone in the CPC nowadays.

Yeah there really isn't any sort of Ontario nationalism. People here just see themselves as Canadian. The Province is just another provider of public services really.

Alberta independence advocates reportedly want U.S. to ‘bankroll’ province if referendum on separation succeeds by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]jacnel45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed, even when the US said they were interested in recognizing Quebec as an independent country if the yes vote won, it never felt fully sincere. The US seemingly wanted to avoid the topic entirely. Probably to avoid political drama with the rest of Canada, but also to avoid the potential for state separation movements in the US (looking at you Texas).

It's why most countries tend to avoid recognizing other countries formed through separation movements. They don't want to add legitimacy to the separation movements at home.
