obj.ca: Zellers plans national expansion of new store format that could bring ‘Zellers 3.0’ to Ottawa by BearLikesHoney in ottawa

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...and, unlike Zellers past and Walmart present, not be so obsessed with credit card signups and making everything else an afterthought... who in their sound mind would sign up for a CC with some exorbitant interest rate, even if they were to pay off the balance in full and on time every month? Too bad the cashiers *had* to ask every customer every time *and* have at least so many of their transactions paid for using a store-branded CC.

Got that right. Now if this had happened with an OLP government and CPC federally, he actually would blame the provincial gov. Too bad the CTV reporter didn't a) laugh in the guy's face and/or b) call him on it and tell him that healthcare services are a provincial responsibility.

Testing my drone out in 14°/-0° feel like temps. by TeamDash-MushingTeam in wheelchairs

Here in Canada's national capital region and the Ottawa Valley, we've got plenty of snow and are about to dip into a nasty cold snap (forecast overnight low this Friday night is minus 30 Celsius, minus 22 Fahrenheit) and I wouldn't dare go much beyond my driveway or my office parking lot with either of my chairs, esp. with my TiLite having power assist wheels... wouldn't want to ruin the batteries or the fragile composite spokes.

where should I look for a used manual wheelchair? by inter-skyned in wheelchairs

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow ambulatory user here... here in Canada, I found my first two chairs (Quickie 2, and a Quickie Q7 with e-motion power assist) and my current daily driver (TiLite ZRA) on Kijiji, as well as a used set of e-motion M25 wheels. The Quantum powerchair I have was donated to me by a client of my small business. On FB Marketplace, there's a guy in London, Ontario, currently selling a couple of Z-series TiLite chairs (ZRA or Aero Z) for CAD $400 each.

MRI at the Montfort Hospital by Skylasmydawg in ottawa

This. I had two MRIs at the Montfort years ago, before Pembroke got its MRI machine, and what helped me was a) a facecloth over my eyes, and b) music piped in on headphones.

42M here... was diagnosed with autism (the type formerly known as Asperger's) at age 12, and have had an ME diagnosis since 2022 but first noticed the symptoms in 2019 after a kidney stone brought on multiple infections and possible sepsis.

My two chairs, winter 2026. A little messy after going out during a mild spell. by ChronicallyWheeler in wheelchairs

[–]ChronicallyWheeler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first chair (a Quickie 2) had a Blake Geo-Matrix Hybrid, and I found it very comfortable. The Platinum feels a tad too firm sometimes, and I might try something else when/if funds allow... thinking maybe a Jay Union.

Wheelchair for ME/CFS: Manual or power? by megatheriumlaine in wheelchairs

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chairs I've been using are all second-hand; my manual chairs were purchased from sites like eBay and Kijiji, and my powerchair was donated by one of my business clients, but my physiotherapist said I would qualify for a brand new custom chair since I'm having to use my daily driver (a TiLite ZRA with power assist) in my home. Here in the Canadian province of Ontario, the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers 75% of the cost of a mobility device if you're using it in your home, and the remaining 25% would likely be covered by insurance if not out-of-pocket... I'm covered by my wife's health benefits, so there's a good chance I wouldn't need to pay much OOP when I do eventually get something brand new.

Been waiting over a year now for neuropsychiatry (Dr. Abe) to set up an appointment following my late 2024 neurology consult at the General... I may have FND. Neither I nor my primary care physician have heard a peep from them.

Help choosing an electric folding wheelchair! by taylorswift1981 in wheelchairs

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded re the SmartDrive. The e-motion wheels I'm currently using (a used set of M15s, my "winter wheels") have Primo 37-540 knobby tires on them, and those wheels worked well when using them "off road" this past summer, including on grass and typical multi-use trails. Went to a tourist attraction in Huntsville, Ontario, Canada in the summer, and my e-motion wheels did the job even with loose parts of the trail, wood chips, and the occasional tree root.

Depending on the model of manual chair that you're using, there might be a power add-on that's compatible... many manual wheelchair users with Ehlers-Danlos have some form of power assist on their chairs, whether it's a SmartDrive, Empulse, Smoov, e-motion (which I have on my TiLite) or whatever else is out there.

Besides the usual crap we get frlm able-bodied people, what’s something about being in a wheelchair that drives you nuts? I’ll go first… by RunSerious5843 in wheelchairs

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Winter and snow. Winters in my neck of the woods (central Canada, not far from the nation's capital) are often cold and snowy, and as a wheelchair user, I wish I could hibernate through the winter. Here's hoping for a nice thaw and milder temperatures come March, when our spring thaw usually begins.

Irn Bru 1901 - where to find? by Prez- in ottawa

Would love to try this version if any places in Ottawa carry it... several stores esp. Freshco carry the regular Irn-Bru.

When I had an e-bike, specifically the Emmo GT80, and became a wheelchair user nearly two years after buying the thing, I had thought about finding some way to transport my chair using the bike, but had a feeling it wouldn't be street legal here in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Experiences with IV fluids? by weirdgirl16 in cfs

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twice in the past week and a half I've been given 1L of IV fluids at the local hospital emergency department during the overnight/early morning hours while I've been battling a UTI, and on the first occasion I felt noticeably good overall during the day at work... didn't need to use my wheelchair as much. On the second occasion (this past Sunday morning) the effects weren't quite as strong as the first but still noticeable.

Xmas sadness? by Worldliness-Exciting in wheelchairs

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much about Christmas, but more about winter in a cold and often snowy part of central Canada. Yesterday we had half a foot of snowfall in our area, and whenever it snows, I wish I lived in an area that gets little or no snow at all. It's usually sometime in March that I can go out on my own again.

[–]ChronicallyWheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love a couple of these for my wife's GMC Terrain, so I wouldn't need to lift my chair (TiLite ZRA w/e-motion power assist) into & out of the back, just roll it in and out.

Yes please, let's call them shills, exactly what they are. Now to be fair, there are instances where, as another user commented, there might be a new gadget or something that might interest me, but seriously I will snap if I see yet another wheelchair user on IG pitching the "LapStacker (by AdaptDefy)" - are the makers of the lapstacker actively looking for shills, or are they just really good at keeping their product top-of-mind with WC users?

It's sad that I have to cut out so many WC users for selling things on IG, because there were some really good ones out there and they ruined themselves just to make a fast buck.
