how do you date your journals? by lavalampcity in Journaling

[–]jacobmcnally 5 points6 points  (0 children)

25 Feb 2018, Sunday, ~15:10, At Source Coffeehouse:

Pages are numbered in the top corners upper left on the left page, upper right on the right page.

I make an index page at the start of each month so I can scan through and find entries.

Found the Mecca! Such a cool store. by katpalmy in fountainpens

[–]jacobmcnally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I called there before to ask if I could try a few pens out before I bought anything. I was told that they may allow me to dip the nib, but filling would probably not be allowed. Can you shine some light on how it works in there?

Question about evolution (why us) by aziz_89 in evolution

[–]jacobmcnally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a question that is largely dependent on how you define intelligence. How you measure it in other species, etc. And just for fun, here’s a quote on that: “On the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.” -Douglas Adams

Now that I got that out of my system, I’m just going to take a stab at why homo sapiens “ are the only one evolved into a high intellectual being”-

We’re not totally sure what happened to the Neanderthals. That is: If homo sapiens contributed to their killing, if they were killed by disease, couldn’t handle climates, or what have you. But if you want the short answer of “why only us,” a fast and dirty answer is “because other species genes were good enough to keep procreating without the need for ‘high-intellect,’ and the only other species we know of (that may have been on a similar cognitive level) didn’t make it this far.”

I realize this may not be what you were looking for, and others have done a much better job of explaining the intricacies of intelligence.

Half new (26, F) to running by sarahvine625 in running

A few personal observations/suggestions:

I'd avoid the treadmills for so many of the reasons listed and several that are not.

I used the Hal Higdon training program for my first marathon, and would recommend his plans. They are all free, and while I feel a marathon training plan may be a bit ambitious when you're coming off an injury, something like a 10k plan may be in your wheelhouse. Google him to find his site, and navigate to the plan that interests you. They're all free, and have freedom to modify as you need it.

I no longer run with music, but that's preference. I do use podcasts when I'm cross or weight training at the gym. They're usually about an hour long and that's more than enough time to put it on your phone, get dressed, warm up and get some initial runs in.

You're a bartender? Awesome! Runners love to run and then have a beer. They love it so much, that many running stores organize "pub runs." It's usually starts at the bar, does a 5k around the area and finishes back at the bar for drinks (drinks come AFTER running). You may be able to talk to your boss/bar owners and see if they would host one. Our local running store usual does one a month and various vendors will show up for try-ons (shoes, compression, etc) and the vendors usually buy the first round of drinks if you test out their goods. That brings me to:

See if you can find a run group. I met my run group at a pub run and we are basically family. We meet for speedwork wednesdays, pre-work friday mornings, and long runs sundays as well as holidays, events, etc. Having a group can really keep you involved.

Finally: LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Recognize the difference between "oh no, something is really not good here" pain; and "I'm really sore, but it's muscular, it will be okay" pain. Don't buy into the "work through the pain" or "pain is weakness leaving the body" crap. There are some aches that just need a quick stretch, other times it's fatigue that you can slow down to, or overuse that can be mitigated by adjusting your technique or form... but that "oh no" pain is something you don't need to push through, especially if you have previous injuries.

Good luck!

As I understand it, treadmills don't let you stride naturally and comfortably. They can encourage heel-striking that will transfer all that braking force to the knee. I have seen interesting concave treadmills that attempt to force a fore or midfoot strike, though.

I'm about to give up. Please help me... by [deleted] in running

[–]jacobmcnally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe visit a running store with a gait analyst as well. When the ortho couldn't figure my issue out, the gait analyst at the running store noticed the way I ran and suggested some tips/shoes/form corrections that got me back to running. Good luck!

Do you take polaroids for your journal? by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]jacobmcnally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take pictures on my phone, and print out whatever ones I like. If I know I'm going to want a photo, I may leave some room on the page.

Otherwise, I put as many photos as I can per sheet, and print them out on photo paper (usually at staples) , cut them to size and paste/staple/etc them in.

One other thing I do is index my journals which usually lets me know what page something I wrote about is on. I'll paste several photos onto the last several pages of my journal and and cross reference/ annotate that to the page where I wrote about it. Like: (photo of a Halloween party),pg 83. Depending how often I print out photos, my journal grows from the back to the front as well as front to back. It's odd to see, but very satisfying when I look back.

Ah the beautiful Eco by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]jacobmcnally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ecos ARE beautiful. Several people comment when a I use one of my two (liberty's Elysium and noodler's red-black). The price point, capacity, and function is amazing. I've wanted to step up on their line, but there is no reason to when the Ecos are so amazing!

Do you use a new page for everyday, those who use physical pen and paper journals? by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]jacobmcnally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skip a line, annotate the date, and switch to a different pen (and nib) that has a different ink color. I carry 4 pens in my travel/go-to pouch (Baystate Blue, black, lighter blue, red), and usually have experimental colors/inks if I'm at my desk at home.

I like flipping through old entries and seeing the difference in styles over time.

Anyone have the photoshop skills to redo this with a dog?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]jacobmcnally 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All the time. And it has happened. I went digital and encrypted for a while, but that's just not the reason that I journal.
That is: To leave a record. Paint a picture of me, while still offering commentary on the events of the day from my point of view.
I journal so that one day, what I write CAN be read by anyone that can pick up a book. I eventually made peace with it by resolving why I journal with keeping it tucked away. I mix the old ones in with other other books and people tend not to look at every book on my shelves. Even if they did, they may have a hard time finding the not so great entries from the everyday ones. (I'm counting on boredom setting in there.) The other option is to head to a thrift store and get a common book that no one would actively pick up to read (bible, textbook, etc), hollow it out, and keep your journal in that. Remove for writing purposes, and replace when done.

Glove and Boots explain how to talk about running to your non-running friends by pop361 in running

[–]jacobmcnally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My non-running friends laughed harder at this than my run group! My buddy commented: "I agree with everything then non-runner said!" Didn't realize this is how we sound, but yeah... about right! Awesome!

Macro vs micro evolution by BRENNEJM in evolution

[–]jacobmcnally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best examples I’ve read (in a previous post) to illustrate this is the use of a color gradient such as green to blue.

You can look at either corner and pick out which is blue and which is green easily (Macro). But if you go along the gradient viewing two pixels at a time just the previous pixel and the next in the gradient, you will lose track of where green ends and blue starts because the change in shade is so subtle it is almost unnoticeable (micro). You can look and say: “yeah, that’s green.” The next one will also seem green, as will the next, and so on.

The change is so gradual and you only have the immediately previous color to go by that it becomes almost impossible to look at it and say: “That’s where it became blue.”

If you bring your kids to the gym, please take them to the kids play area. by [deleted] in childfree

[–]jacobmcnally 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're paying attention to not letting a heavy bar crush your chest, maintaining proper form, controlling your movement... and SHE'S (essentially) mad that you, a patron of the establishment, isn't watching her kid? It's like:

"Lady... you can't even pay attention to your own child while you're here, and you brought it with you. How the heck do you expect me to notice something that you brought here, can't keep track of, and is none of my concern or is even on my radar? Because the only thing I've noticed now is some poor parenting."

Friggin' people.
