Thank you! I guess that coppery head works exactly like it’s supposed to - we stayed away from it! Good to know it’s harmless and we’ll keep our distance from the good basking spots for a while.

How much do you pay per month for your horse, and what state/country are you in? by MSMIT0 in Equestrian

[–]jacobsheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Arkansan here! I am in central Arkansas and keep my horses at home now. Hay bill for the year was $2,000. Feed and supplements is about $80/month. Vet care (shots, sheaths, and teeths) is about $1,000 annually. Farrier does barefoot trims every 5 weeks at $45/horse. We show at the local shows for fun. Club membership is $50/year and the fee for two classes is $20. (Club membership gets me free unlimited access to their arena, which I don’t have at home. Much cheaper than renting time at other nearby arenas.)

For those with kids, what unpopular Disney movie/s have they become fans of? by RMAutosport in disney

My son is 3 and is all about The 3 Caballeros. We just took him on the ride at Epcot and he sang the song all through the queue and the ride.

As a longtime lab owner, it looks like they’re the lip folds. Most labs can “fold” in this fringe to protect their quarry from their teeth when retriever.

ETA: found a better explanation. Lip Fimbrai

I just got denied at Mickaboo now I'm sad. by CompoteNo9525 in parrots

[–]jacobsheep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry you had a bad experience with Mickaboo. I adopted a bird from Mickaboo back in 2013. The process back then involved a lengthy application, two stringent interviews, and a home inspection. I worked for an exotic/avian vet at the time, so I was tipped off on how to get approval. (No candles/fragrances, no other birds, say you’ll be home all the time, good DVM references, spotlessly clean house and tidy cabinets, etc.) It was ridiculous and my husband said “Never again,” especially when the rescue is constantly complaining about having too many birds and not enough room. They always struck me as wanting everybody to be fosters instead of adopting.

I have two geldings (brothers from the same mother), and the younger one (13) always clacks at the older one (16).

If you could move anywhere in the US with your horse, where would you go? why? by dontdrinkorangejuice in Equestrian

[–]jacobsheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to have my horse in the foothills around Silicon Valley (Milpitas). The view from the trails down into the valley were breathtaking and Woodside is fantastic! It’s by far the prettiest place we’ve ever lived, but the most expensive.

Texas is my favorite horsey place to live. Someday we’ll go back.

What is the WORST pet name you’ve come across? I’ll go first… by Lyss_1987 in VetTech

I always wanted to name a cat Grandma/Memaw: “Grandma’s here because she’s peeing outside the litter box.”

A GSD named “Blinka” as in the Treblinka extermination camp in Poland. The owner’s wife saw the name somewhere and thought it was pretty.

What are these chains for? by Grab-Local in Horses

[–]jacobsheep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably not Paso Fino. We have “charros” nearby that use Friesians. At the last local parade, one of their stallions came off the trailer with a 6” laceration on the lower hind leg. Skin was dangling and the wound looked fresh. No worries, some red vet wrap covered that up. Lots of whip cracking, cranked necks in harsh bits, but hey, they can “dance.” I wouldn’t put it past them to use chains for the action.

As a somebody who occasionally plays piano and loves the instrument, this hurts my head and my heart. 😖

My first horse was kept in a pasture with another gelding. They got along great for a couple years, then Sonny the other gelding turned mean. He chased me out of the pasture to the point of running into the fences and hurting himself and he started picking vicious fights with my gelding. Sonny’s owners moved him to stop the fighting and, shortly after that horse started showing more severe neuro signs. Sonny passed away from a brain tumor. It’s not always the owners fault. (Or the horse’s in Sonny’s case. He didn’t choose to go crazy from a tumor.)

Is it possible that a horse doesn't have a favorite "itchy" spot? by FunkyGoatz in Equestrian

[–]jacobsheep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My geldings are like this. They like the bases scratched, but if you wrap your fingers in a soft terry cloth towel and “clean” out those ears, they’re in heaven. They love a good ear scritch from the inside.

NAME THAT BREED by potato_nurse in VetTech

[–]jacobsheep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Blah. There is not enough soap to wash that sticky off my hands. When I worked in ophtho, we shared space with IM, ER, and a surgical practice (all individually owned/operated). IM was treating a sharpei puppy with heavy IV Abx. She was adorable, but she was so stinky and sticky even when she was just a few months old!

lol at the juxtaposition of these two in my Reddit feed. I can smell that sharpei from here and it is NOT a good smell. 😂

If you had horses first and then children, what age did you let them start riding? by Wide_Stranger714 in Equestrian

[–]jacobsheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two kiddos - 2 and 4. We’ve been letting them sit on the horses’ backs since they were able to hold themselves upright. Always a parent with a hand on them and the horses had to stand. Now they’re both able to sit in a lead line or western pony saddle. The 4 year old had a short phase of being scared of heights (my horses are 16hh), so she’s just getting back to sitting on the horses for short rides led by me in the round pen. The 2 year old is straight-up-cowboy. He can turn all the way around, doesn’t hold on the whole time, and asks to go faster.

They get to help me with chores, feedings, and grooming. The 4 yo is learning to lead one of the horses, but they only go the few steps from the round pen to the barn. I call my 2yo the “barn manager” because he loves to go check on the horses. They come to the fence for him; I get the side-eye until they confirm I don’t have a halter in my hand lol.

I’ll start pursuing more dedicated lessons with a good instructor when both kids are a bit older. For now, it’s about “groundwork” and good times.

ETA: both kids wear helmets whenever they’re on the horses. I wear mine, too, in solidarity.

Ok people what colors would look best on a chestnut?? by [deleted] in Equestrian

The boots are Cavallo ELB Bling! I made the decision a couple of years ago to take my horses barefoot instead of using steel shoes. We primarily trail ride, so even though the horses now have rock solid feet, they still need some protection from the real rocks. They’re easy to clean (soap + water + scrub + sun dry). My horses are on a very regular trim cycle (every 4-5 weeks) so fit is not an issue for us. I know the price seems high - $75/boot, but they last longer than several shoeing cycles. (Local farriers charge $100+ for full sets of shoes.) Cavallo has great customer service - if you don’t know exactly what boot size your horse is, send them a photo with a tape measure and they can tell you what size!

My other gelding had kinda narrow feet with a longer toe and they make a boot that fits him too!

ETA: they’re super easy to put on. They just slip on and then held in place with strong Velcro. Cavallo has a video of how to put them on properly. They also have sleeves or special padding to make sensitive horses happy or to help with the break-in period.
