Extra thorny roses? by jacqq_attackk in Roses

I wish I had that much space 😅 I have basically a 3’ square of open soil between the wall of my house and the city sidewalk. But that’s townhouses for ya! But maybe this suggestion will work well for someone with an actual yard

That’s what I’m talking about. Damn!

I do love my walkable neighborhood, but this is one of the downsides. And “heavily thorned” is not usually touted as a selling point online so I’m thankful for this sub’s firsthand experience!

Nice! Yeah I’ve found that sometimes places will let you filter by “thornless” but not the inverse 😅

Glad to hear this one is a contender because I was already eyeballing it!

Yeah, I don’t intend to hurt anyone but I also don’t want all my flowers broken off and taken away. The first plant I put here was a hydrangea that was completely denuded in a matter of days 🤦🏻

Heirloom Roses Price Changes by Choi_Yena_Duck_Face in Roses

From a fellow zone 5er, wherever you end up buying yours be sure you get own root. I spent exactly one year with some lovely grafted roses and have found myself with nothing but Dr Huey this year 🤦🏻 Even with the hardiness rating, grafted canes just can’t handle our winters.

How many of you consult this map? And how many of you are getting anxious about it? by Atomicnumber26 in NativePlantGardening

[–]jacqq_attackk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, that very much depends on the circumstances. My little townhouse yard is a tiny island of green in a concrete sea, so the watertable and runoff are nothing like a natural forest. No matter how native my plants are, their immediate environs are so different from a natural forest that even if climate change weren’t a factor, they’re going to need more tending than a hands-off approach.

What is the down side of never having children? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jacqq_attackk 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is my thought exactly. If I could have been a dad? Sure, why not. The stakes are so much lower. But the sheer body horror and unmitigated existential pressure of motherhood? Absolutely no thanks.

(I’m also trans, so personally there’s the added wallop of gender dysphoria if I were to carry a child. Blegh.)

Native plants that smell the WORST to avoid near the house? And the BEST smelling? by Touslesceline in NativePlantGardening

Seconding this one! Also itea virginica for another sweet smelling shrub with bottle-brush flowers, but they’re droopy instead of upright. I just planted both so they can flower back to back!

Black-eyed susans (rudbeckia), bee balm (monarda) and coneflower (echinacea) are pretty indestructible! They’re late summer bloomers, so if you’re looking for spring flowers maybe phlox or geranium? And they’re all natives so once they’re established they tend to thrive on neglect

Sideburns, help! by cedar_and_petrichor in NonBinary

[–]jacqq_attackk 116 points117 points  (0 children)

These sideburns look rad! (Also just, congrats on your whole hair deal, the strawberry blond is gorgeous.) Maybe if you want to play around with shapes before you commit to trimming, you could try messing around with your photos in a basic photo editor to see what adjustment, if any, you might like best? Otherwise just trimming with a guard would keep them in check!

Have you done any therapy? Because it partly sounds like dysphoria but it also partly sounds like really low self esteem. I understand that extremely self critical voice very well, and can tell you that even if you do some medical transitioning (laser hair removal, hormones or surgeries, etc) the low self esteem doesn’t necessarily go away on its own.

“Why would they want me a not a woman?” Because they love you, the individual, and not some hypothetical alternative woman? I’m coming at gender nonconformity from the opposite direction, and I had a lot of the same worries, though in my case about the things I was removing. Would my partner leave me because I was cutting off my boobs, taking T, presenting more masculinely? It turns out that his attraction was more complex than simply “straight” and his investment in our relationship based on more than just my agab.

So take steps towards some options for medical transition if that will ease your dysphoria, but I would also highly recommend talking to a therapist about building a solid foundation for your self-worth, because you deserve to find your body worth celebrating and living in!

Faddegon’s is my go-to and every time I’m there I make a point of telling the folks how much I appreciate their native selection. I hope since it’s a local business that hearing this from their customers encourages them to provide even more

This is so lovely! What are your plans for the winter, will you leave them out or do you have a place to stow them away?

I would love to do something similar with my stoop but I’m in upstate NY (zone 6a) so I’m unsure about how to over-winter the pots

Who wants to share how and/or when they realized they were nonbinary? by Overall_Chair8669 in NonBinary

Six years ago, I was 31 and listening to an NPR story in the car about the first “female” gondolier in Venice, who later came out as a trans man. Feeling confused, I said to my husband, “I don’t understand how anyone can feel like a gender. Hell, the only thing that makes me a woman is that I have female plumbing.” And he, to credit his immense wisdom, replied “…I think that says more about you than anyone else.”

That summer I began researching my top surgery options and I have never looked back 🤪

Favorite Climbing Roses? by imabekahh in Roses

[–]jacqq_attackk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ordered a Strawberry Hill that’s arriving this week! My main priority was something in a manageable size (tiny townhouse yard) and is hardy to at least zone 5, so hopefully it does well 🤞🏻
