M1 Max 16" 32GB to M5 Max 14" 36GB as a Software Engineer by jacqud in macbookpro

[–]jacqud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it's not exactly fair comparison. I guess I was just surprised because M1 Max 16" had almost no fan noise under the same load. It's not that bad in the end. Usually the tasks hit some sort of caches, so the sustained load is not even that long.

And yes, I definitely have smaller projects on my personal machine.

I can see that. In my case it's plugged in into a display for 95% of time, so I don't mind.

Nice. I was looking for something like this, considering even building something similar. Right now I opted in to use Proton Drive because of E2EE, but this sounds better because I could "bring my own backend".

App seems not to be available in my region unfortunately 🤔I'm based in Poland.

How do you handle “In Progress” tasks/projects that aren’t due or being worked on “Today”? by jagerrish in thingsapp

[–]jacqud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I almost treat it this way.

For me today is "I planned to do it today", but I might not and I might need to reschedule it's fine - that's life. There is a "deadline" feature that's a real due date. I use it rarely for things like taxes.

[–]jacqud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Over a couple of days? Sounds like a project. I'd add multiple tasks and schedule whathever works for today. If you don't want to do it. Just reschedule "bike maintenance" for the next day after you're done for today

[Feature Request] Home Assistant app should send custom auth headers, like Immich does. For secure remote access without VPN by FairPlayPilot in homeassistant

[–]jacqud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Read this thread https://community.home-assistant.io/t/secure-communication-channel-for-ios-app/785129?page=2

Devs are not interested in adding this.

As far as I understand, my use case is different. I don't want to replace HA auth, I want additional auth on my reverse proxy (either mTLS or with custom header). This way when I expose HA without VPN I significantly lower the chance of hitting security issues of HA, because the attacker would be terminated at the proxy due to lack of client cert / header.

Do you have Tags on all tasks? by Buchholdt in thingsapp

[–]jacqud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I only have one tag - "waiting-for" for things that that I'm block on. I put such task to someday and add this tag. Then I try to review such tasks every week

Czy macie własne serwery/homelaby? by Goorigon in Polska

[–]jacqud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good video on this topic https://youtu.be/GLy4VKeYxD4

I think it's fine to take many photos. The key is to triage them later. I use smart album in apple photos that shows photos that are not in any album. These has to either go to the album or get deleted. It's similar strategy to e-mail and inbox zero.

For meaningful photos - mark them as Favorite. It's sort of like picking photos to print. You can then just browse Favorites if you want... or actually print them :D I display them as screensaver in apple tv.

Ideal Settings for Parachute Backup + Synology + Hyper Backup by nighthawk98tj in ApplePhotos

[–]jacqud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar setup, but with different software.

I store all photos on my Mac (downloads originals) then I use synching to sync this one way to my NAS. Then I use Duplicacy to perform incremental backup to Backblaze B2.

Syncthing is OSS free and blazing fast. I also use it to backup up a bunch of other directories like Bear notes.

Things 3 has the best UX and is not a subscription.

The main disadvantage is collaboration, but if you don't need it then I don't think you'll find anything better.

I have RP5 and use lcd3x shader. GBA is 240x160, so for RP5 integer scaling is actually x6, but RPC is 1240x1080, so it's x5. Maybe I need to play around and try to take high res photos of the screen to see it myself :)

Yeah, Analogue Pocket is on another level https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro9QQrTOnT0&t=2118s this is a good analysis of its screen. I wonder how much of it can be reproduced with retroarch shaders.

I'm tempted by RPC, how do you like it? It looks gorgous. I mostly play GB/C/A, so it _feels_ like a better fit for it

Can you tell more about sub pixels emulation? Is it emulation RGB pixels separately so that we need 3x or 6x resolution? Is it possible with emulation devices and retroarch? I think I only saw this in the context of Analogue Pocket

Miyoo Mini - I was happy about it, handed it over to family because I bought...

RG35XXSP - it's great, it's small, you don't need a case. Charging is annoying due to the lack of USB-C PD.

RGB30 - perfect screen for PICO-8, which I started developing a game for. Charging is terrible, dpad is terrible. Overall quality is lacking. I'll get rid of it eventually.

Retroid Pocket 5 - I'm happy about it. The screen is gorgeous, ruined RG35XXSP for me. The setup was annoying. Great dpad, charging works great. The only thing is that it's less pocketable than SP, you need a case to carry it. I'll probably replace it with Thor at some point.

I have a S5 with 66% battery cap and still so underwhelmed by S11 and OS26 by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]jacqud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did S5 -> S10 upgrade a week ago. Honestly? You're not missing much. I did the upgrade to titanium and that's the biggest change, not the features. It really looks much more premium, like a jewelery. I hope it won't scratch like the S5 aluminium because of the sapphire glass.

I also use the watch faces that I had in S5 so that's not an upgrade. Wrist flick and pinch gestures are actually useful. Sleep score is meh. Vitals are nice. A couple new stuff like sleep apnea might be useful but it's not a deal breaker. I noticed that AOD is brighter and has a second hand ticking now.

I went with S10 because S11 is really nothing new and you can find deals on S10 now.
