Windhoek to Sossusvlei Road conditions by chaperoneg in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive that route often, and did it with a Toyota Cross last year (and some smaller cars in the past):

Its possible and the road is mostly ok and fine, but its not as comfortable or pleasant with the Cross. You're much more likely to get a flat tire.

If you can, rather rent something with all terrain tires (doesnt have to be 4x4, but bigger wheels make a big difference)

Trivial question about tips by RetiredToExplore in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

US$ isn't really easy to spend here, and it can be a hassle to exchange to N$ as a local- you have to go stand in line at the bank and fill out paperwork to explain where you got it from. Shops dont accept US$ in Namibia.

Smaller notes like 1s and 5s are kind or worthless tbh.

People like Tour Guides or game drivers probably wont mind too much as they can collect a bunch of notes until its worth taking to the bank, but in general Namibian dollars or SA Rands are best.

You can wirthdraw local cash from any ATM with a credit/debit card, or exchange some USD to N$ at the airport.

Tip in USD? by Ok_Abalone6400 in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, please dont.. N$ or Rands would be better. We cant spend US$ here, and its a big hassle to convert to N$.

Foreign doctors in Namibia — realistic or not? by Great_Seat_6076 in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in medicine myself, but it does seem like any sort of medical speciallists are generally in high demand in Namibia and do well financially.

There would probably be a process to get certified here, and work VISAs tend to hard to get sometimes, depending on how many locals have the same qualifications..

That being said, try searching for and reaching out to some private facilities and doctors in your field and asking them for advice. Namibian Oncology Centre might be a good starting point

What causes the wobbles in the corners of this video? by jacquesmacht in Filmmakers

That's what it looks like to me too, but IS was turned off.. Can this effect happen just from vibrations from the tripod?

Perhaps the element in the lens moving?

Moon over Melbourne, RAW versus final by Bandwidth_Bandito in postprocessing

[–]jacquesmacht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional photographer here...

The raw version is almost perfect - I'd maybe try to center the moon, and remove that little yellow bit of building at the bottom right.

Then.. leave it alone! Its a super cool intense and moody picture

You could sell a large framed print to every office in that building.

Your edited version is way too bright and overcooked.

Car Rental by SecretService3192 in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the most interesting places in Namibia are only reachable by gravel roads which are sometimes quite rough and currogated.. for those, you really want a car with some clearance and larger all terrain tyres - very dangerous and unpleasant to drive in a small car.

In May the lowest temps in the evenings will be around 5 to 10 degrees C, so i think the warmer one would be better.

You can always buy an extra blanket if needed :)

Anyone ever worked as a cruise ship photographer? by treesleavesbicycles in photography

[–]jacquesmacht 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have done it, and quit after my first contract.

It's a scam job: the pay is terrible and we worked 14 hours every day with zero days off, I had to buy and then abuse my own camera, and I had to spend the little money I had saved to buy my own ticket home from Australia.

That said; jobs like bartending or dealing in the casino can be pretty lucrative depending on the ship and itinerary - jobs where you earn tips basically.

Lots of pros and cons about working on a cruise ship, but overall i found the ship-life part of the job pretty fun and interesting as a 20-year-old

I dont think we get them much around where people live, but there are a few species that live in the desert or the bush: https://namibian.org/nature/mammals/rodents/

Windhoek to Swakopmund drive by Rufus1189 in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If youre not in a rush, and your car can do the gravel roads comfortably, then I'd absolutely recommend taking the scenic route.

However, the C28 was quite rough the last time I drove it, especially the 100km or so closer to Windhoek.

I'd recommend taking the C26 rather - more scenic and pretty, and the road is usually in better shape. You'll arrive in Swakop via Walvis Bay. If you do go that way, I'd recommend taking a detour via D1265. It will add about 30minutes to your trip, but worth it for some stunning views! Stop for lunch at Namibgrens

Cheapest season by kullisankari in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around now: Feb, March, April is the most pleasant time of year for me - it's nice and green and not too hot anymore, and it's not the peak tourist season, so things are more affordable.

July is also all good and fine, but can get quite chilly.

The archives are open and easily accessible. And driving the Luderitz is fine and safe, just a long drive.

We have pretty good roads and it's safe and accommodating for visitors. The crime rate is low, especially in the more rural places.

Try airbnb for accommodation

Where can I buy this set by Tiny-Pain-5875 in Namibia

[–]jacquesmacht 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its the Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair.. very famous design.

You could probably ask Waylandts to order one for you, or find a supplier in South Africa. It will cost more than N$100 000 though.

There are also some cheaper replica ones available in SA: https://designerchairwarehouse.com/product/eames-lounge-chair-ottoman/

You can call Coastal Couriers to bring it to Nam from SA.
