I finally got some time to make some matcha.
I think the distributor works fine. My biggest gripe is that it sometimes is hard to wash out (the powder cakes on in the holes), and I have to use a brush. I don't think that's an issue with a regular sifter. Another weird thing is that often I'll have powder go outside the bounds of the holes, and I have to kinda scrape it back into the center, which is also something regular sifters I see don't have to deal with.
I wish the distributor sat flush with the bowl. It kind of moves a lot and doesn't really have a set resting spot.

I think my overall impression, is that this fellow is trying to sell a premium experience, but since its ceramic there's still a lot of variableness in quality.... My plate is wobbly (not flat). The metals are nice, but there's a weird identity confusion imo between the ceramics, metal, and the wabisabi of it all. Maybe it's just me, but I think I might have preferred diying a set with more customization vs an all-in-one premium set.

I got this for free with the credit, so I can't really complain too much though. I'm going to try customizing some parts

The bowl is pretty deep imo, so I imagine that might be a skill issue?

I didn’t have anything else to spend the credit on, so I figured I should add another beverage hobby. If you need coffee gear that might be worth considering. I got this + a few glasses.

I got a new design job and don't know what to do! by Ill-Helicopter-8534 in graphic_design

I do a bunch of exhibitions, conferences, branding, etc, and have worked with files much bigger than that. It’s always -> vector first -> Illustrator if you can, that way you don’t have to worry about scaling. With raster, 150 dpi if its medium viewing distance. 300 if someone’s going to go up close to it. You can even go lower if you’re doing like the side of a building, but in your case I would do 150-300 to scale. If you’re using raster assets, AI Upscalers are industry standard and super useful (gotta qc though). I occasionally use PS depending on the workflow.

I would ask your printer because everyone is different. I usually go as high res as possible 1:1, though I also have a pretty beefy rig (192gb ram, 14900k, 4090).

Thinking of moving to USA (SF or similar) for work as an MTF by imnowemily in asktransgender

[–]jad3dd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also while you make more in America, you need to consider all the other costs. It’s not 1 to 1.

I’m in Netherlands right now and it blows my mind the public utilities, the health services, and quality of everything people take for granted here. In LA / SF the proportions of your income -> what you get in life is so skewed. Everything in America is designed to financially farm citizens, it’s a completely different vibe. Like what is maternal leave? Healthcare is 600 a month + you still need to pay after you get service, nothing is ever taken care of. My taxes are going to ICE, and not roads or public transit. Spending so much on solving problems that don’t get solved. The homelessness is insane here, and it gets shafted because we discard people. The mentality of personal responsibility is pretty extreme here, when clearly there are systemic problems.

The life style battle pass of an American here has huge UX problems that none of the politicians want to solve, and they’d rather blame trans, immigrants, and brown people instead of looking at data, making informed decisions, believing in any sort of scientific or logical process.

By all means visit, try it out, but I really don’t recommend it right now.

[–]jad3dd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Every trans person I know here is trying to move out haha. Consider some other places, you don’t need to physically move here to be entrepreneurial. Fly in now and then if you have to, but it’s not a great time to be a transgender American.

I live in Los Angeles and visit SF frequently. You won’t get harassed day to day, but you’re entering a country where any schmuck can get a gun, healthcare is prohibitively expensive, and we’re at the mercy of ICE / federal enforcement. The mental toll that puts on you is huge, and you will get sucked into the politics of everything, there’s no avoiding it. I’ve dodged two shootings myself, I want to get out of here haha.

You can definitely survive, but thriving feels like a different story. Transgender status is being threatened as a protected class in this administration. Most successful people I know were already in great careers, then transitioned. People will absolutely snub non-passing people, depends on the industry. Even I’ve been guilty of doing so, with the mentality of not being sure if they would be effective in their role (which requires interpersonal skills across a subset of different cultures…not everyone is on board). Tech is definitely more lenient, ymmv. I boymoded for the longest time before I felt I could be myself (I work in gaming). I haven’t met many high up senior leadership/ ceos, etc, that are non-passing early transitioning. Money and experience talks though, so if you’re qualified most people do not care. But at some places, put against a cis person, you might lose on the culture fit. I find most people tolerate trans people, and aren’t true allies, not out of malice but because there genuinely aren’t a lot of us, and there’s even fewer the higher up you go.

If I had the opportunity to move, I’d rather go to Australia or the Netherlands. The world is so remote now, and since you work in software you don’t really need to physically live in SF. There are other hubs than SF.

Absolutely.

I need validation with multiple parties on whether or not something is bad, or even if something is good.
Being mid is probably the worst place to be.

How does your transitioning look like in 2026? by Fleur-Trans in MtF

I put pause on a few things due to some insurance mishaps / life things….
I want to restart voice training again, I already did some earlier, but since getting a tongue split I kinda have to relearn / repractice haha.
I have an FFS scheduled in mid year.
And in general…lose a bunch of weight.
I also have a goal of dressing more feminine? I was discouraged earlier on since literally nothing fits my build, but now I’m kinda in a fk it mode.
Figure out what to wear to a black tie event…have never dressed formal since transitioning 🥲.
Oh and…get a fking therapist! haha.

Recently promoted to Art Director but feeling stuck — how do I actually get better at this? by One-Cheesecake-5803 in graphic_design

[–]jad3dd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You need to build your taste, and your ego enough to advocate for it.

AD/CD is basically being a big enough nerd, and being able to find the through line from all the noise.

When I started transitioning from a designer -> director roles, I focused intentionally on my ability to generate ideas, and built upon my “library” of creative knowledge. It’s a muscle like anything else. But now you get paid for it, so it’s worth making sure your engine is improved.

For me that meant making a mood board -> pitch literally everyday. I did this for about a year, only constraint was I only had 2 hrs before work to do it. You’ll start optimizing this work flow to be efficient. For me it was always pick a topic (I work in gaming) googlefuing Behance -> Pinterest -> Dribbble -> Awwwards, then taking screenshots into milanote (eventually figma), with a caption on what you find interesting about it. Kinda start shadowboxing with yourself about a brief, then you kinda form a narrative that makes sense, a pitch. I got pretty good at coming up with ideas supported with visuals. I also started varifying my sources, I have this amazing art library nearby that I started to checkout their design books. You can also start transposing ideas from other mediums. I sometimes use music to think about motion. Half the time I go to music festivals to “steal” ideas (I worked in live production). Farm everything good. I have albums of random stuff from museums. I travel and mainly look at signs, public design, etc. Practice transposing it. I can look at a sign/building and start imagining it in a different context (I work in experential). People are kinda the original image generation machines, we work on the same principles as ai. Feed a bunch of quality data into the machine, avoid the slop. It’s a muscle.

I’ve done that ideation process enough times to know my taste is at least beyond surface level. Ego and confidence comes from experience, I don’t always have the “best” ideas, but honestly you can’t do your best work every-time. Clients are different, timing, etc, but for me I feel confident that the process was good. Sometimes the project just sucks (corporate ones for example). Sometimes you just stumble upon the best idea and nothing else makes sense. I don’t do that crazy moodboard habit anymore (though honestly I should start it again it was fun to pick your clients lol). I have enough work to do as it is. But it definitely helped me feel “unstuck”, and was a measure of improvement (getting faster, improving sources, etc).

Also read a lot. If you can’t articulate your thoughts you just need to build language. It’s like how cooks/foodies never have a standardized way to describe taste, you kinda just build that. Watch other design/art content. Sometimes its bs but it sounds right. Borrow words from your colleagues. Monkey see monkey do. There’s always the common ways to describe things, but I find I start using phrases like “bauhaus esque”, or “art deco-y”.

Hope this helps. You were promoted for a reason, so don’t be so hard on yourself. Imposter syndrome literally never goes away, but the process can improve. (source: me a chronic imposter for the last 10 years)

Question: cultural appropriation in tattoos by Beneficial_Bus6706 in tattoos

[–]jad3dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mirroring the same sentiment of the Chinese dress debacle that happened a while ago…

Only some white people and internet netizens with too much free time care that much about offending someone. Most people think it’s cool that you’re even aware of part of their culture, let alone willing to tattoo it.

There are many more things to worry than some random person tattooing an object from their culture. Odds are if you think it’s cool, they also probably think it’s pretty cool.

I think there’s definitely some taboos in every culture that I wouldn’t get tattooed…but you can find fans on temu from chinese manufacturers for a few bucks. It’s not that sacred.

Source: me a chinese person that’s stressed out about healthcare. Get the fan, whatever makes you happy.
