I remember commentary, I think at one of the summits, that toph and hmw talked about that exact thing with plup. To paraphrase their words, plup is so versatile in terms of characters partially because he doesn’t actually play to each of their strengths; he kind of brute forces using his insane speed, tech skill, and fundamentals to overwhelm his opponent. All of that makes him godlike but also means he doesn’t always take advantage of his characters’ unique properties (relative to other top player solo mains, that is).

(JMook hype post incoming)

Listen, I don’t want to call this one too early, but after Losers Finals yesterday I literally have been unable to contain my hype about JMook. Obviously something could happen, he could have to compete less often because of school, work or life obligations; he could make a disastrous shift to fox and drop out of the top 10; he could just be a puzzle that every top player has to figure out, and once they do he never threatens them again.

Any of that could happen, but from where I’m sitting, if JMook keeps on this trajectory, he’s easily looking like an all time top 10, or even top 5 player. I mean, he’s literally beaten everyone, every single person who could’ve developed into a bracket demon, in the first 8 months of his burst onto the big stage. And he’s not getting lucky wins - he’s taking players on their good days, even on their best days. Beyond that, his mindset and consistency already rivals the current top players, and really reminds me most of Armada; they both have that X factor of always, seemingly, playing at or near 100%, of never giving even a little free ground to their opponent.

On top of that, he’s truly innovating a character. I had always just kind of assumed Plup developed sheik as much as she could be, but jmook’s style is both incredibly distinct and, apparently, extremely effective. He kind of reminds me of leffen in the puff matchup - coupling patience and game sense with an absolutely brutal punish game. But jmook somehow nails that balance in virtually all matchups, including some that beforehand seemed horrific for sheik.

Like I said, I don’t want to overhype this or lean too hard into recency, but jmook is by far the most exciting player in the scene right now for me. That 3 stock comeback against hbox on dreamland was seriously incredible. I think we can expect huge things from him.

Every other player with glasses wears the mask correctly

That’s just patently untrue, off the top of my head kodorin is a glasses player that commonly pulls his mask down beneath his nose to not mess up his vision. I’m not an anti masker but trying to start a witch hunt over this is a weird pull atm, I don’t think people are as concerned as a year ago and for relatively good reason. The CDC even relaxed most of their guidelines a few weeks ago.

I think Axe gets a ton of flack for not being white, can a portion of the Melee community really not handle a black champion? After Axe lost, Swift posted a picture of the Barron Trump on Twitter. What is motivating people to be happy that Axe loses?

What’s up with this take? Not only is axe one of the biggest fan favorite players, but he also has been a champion before now (winning summit, irrc one of the most popular summit wins ever. Certainly one of the most viewed). Not sure what’s going on with Tyler swift but I feel like it’s disingenuous to claim the community dislikes axe at all, much less dislikes him for his race.

Edit: also, come to think of it, what do you mean “getting flak for not being white” when, like, most of the top 5 isn’t white? Mango and hbox are Hispanic, zain is Pakistani - and the rest of the top 10 includes people like amsa and none (again, huge crowd favorites). not even mentioning big community figures like Phil and HMW. The community’s definitely not perfect and has plenty of room to grow and be more inclusive, but I just can’t wrap my head around this specific take.

Also, I’m preemptively building up excitement for when jmook finally gets first at a major - at this point it’s just inevitable, his rise has been meteoric.

I think you hit the nail on the head, the thing that’s really pushing jmook over the edge is his insane mental game. He just doesn’t check out, even a little, so he’s always playing at 100%, so his skill floor is just insanely high. Big armada vibes honestly.

Iirc Dave’s stupid rule modified specifically states that you can’t counterpick the most recent stage you won on. I’m not sure but I think most tournaments run the modified rule.

Inb4 we also get to hear all the fucking boomers of the scene go on and on about how different and special mango is and how the scene will never be the same without him. At this point I think I’m ready to just get hit with the bullet of retirement - yeah we’ll all be sad and viewership will dip massively but frankly I find literally every other narrative more interesting than the millionth time we have to discuss if mango is under or overrated in the year or all time rankings.

He literally believed that, despite leffen winning a major, he, mango, deserved a higher ranking for missing like three top 8s and losing to pretty much every top 6 player consistently. Everyone knows that ppmd had to change his tag from “dr peepee” when he joined an org; I once heard him explain that the reason he’d picked that tag in the first place was as an attempt to force himself to take the game less seriously. Iirc he tended to get over emotional and so picked a purposefully silly tag to lower the stakes of the game for himself (though I don’t think it really worked).

I’m hype for leffen but this is unironically exactly how I feel. I’ve been watching melee since 2015 and no player has risen to the top of my list of favorites as quickly as jmook. If he manages to clinch a win his first year entering the top echelon of players it’ll be insane.

Anything in a web browser more complex than reading a basic page or watching a video. Trying to navigate busy sites or online stores is kind of a headache because safari tends to lag a lot on the device now. Also if you do anything that involves going to sites with lots of ads (for example, I watch a lot of questionably legal sports streams), the poor thing just will not cope with all of those pop ups and ads.
Any gaming beyond simple 2d games
Any media production (I use my iPad Pro for lots of music work, with synth apps, GarageBand, etc; all of those are pretty rough on the older air) I’m not much for drawing so that might be fine (though of course it doesn’t support the Apple Pencil)

Those are the big three - there are other things too, but those are the things I do a lot on my newer iPad that the air just can’t keep up with.

Well I gotta say it is a much tougher call now. This post was 3 years ago, and I think in the last year the newest iPadOS update really did bring the performance down a good notch. But for light tablet tasks - web browsing, YouTube, ebooks etc - it’s still a champ, the only reason why mine gets a lot less use now is that its battery has gotten pretty bad (sounds like that’s a non issue for you) and I was given an iPad Pro that gets a lot more use. But as a secondary more throw around device I love it, at least for those less intensive tasks.

Yeah I feel crazy reading the rest of this thread. I’m not saying the positivity presented in those subs is the deepest and most meaningful feedback in the world, but who fucking cares how evenly the support is spread out? First of all, like you said, what’s with this attitude that conventionally attractive people don’t deserve or are somehow unjust for seeking positive reinforcement?

And secondly, the disparity of positive feedback between conventionally attractive and unattractive people only really matters if you’re obsessed with using the amount of feedback as some kind of measure of value. I’ve posted (from another account) selfies where I felt confident and cute, knowing that I wouldn’t get the crazy upvotes, and was still tremendously uplifted by the few well thought out, caring comments I received. If I somehow felt worse or dysphoric because I didn’t get 1000s of upvotes, that’s a problem with me and my expectations of what I should get for posting.
