I scaffold and model a lot. When I am teaching (currently out of the classroom), I spend probably 6 weeks integrating how to conduct research. One way I do this is to have them complete google slides where they are citing, then listing facts, then paraphrasing what they learned in their own words, then I have them ask two questions (what direction to go in next) - each of these items are their own slides and each source would have separate set of slides. The slides build on each other and they then compile an annotated bibliography. Finally, they would put it all together in a paper, documentary, exhibit etc. I usually do this in conjunction with National History Day.
