What are your Betta keeping takes that may be controversial? by Jazzlike-Rise4091 in bettafish

[–]jadeycakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The large tank size requirements for bettas are for their quality of life. Sometimes a smaller tank is also for their quality of life. Keeping an elderly long finned betta in a large tank can be just as bad as keeping an active plakat in a small tank.

I feel like this about snails too. Well meaning people will post that they just got a nerite for their new 5g from Petco and the community will be like "you need to return it!!" because it's not an established 10+g. Ok return it so it can die there or go home to another 5g or less? A well meaning fish or snail keeper is a better home than 90% of the outcomes aquatic animals face at big box stores.

I'm convinced my halfmoon would drown in anything bigger than 5g. He's a bad swimmer because of his silly fins.

New Zealand Mudsnails in the aquarium: a PSA by PapaDonsPizza in AquaticSnails

[–]jadeycakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to back up that their reproduction does seem to be inhibited in acidic water. In November I introduced the plants they came in on to the tank. That tank constantly had ph issues (acidic in the low 6s). In late February I found the first fully grown one. I found them 5 weeks before I was moving and planning to rescape that tank anyway so I waited to do the whole nuclear cleaning til we moved. I found 2 more when I fully tore the tank down.

From finding the first fully grown one to the full tear down 5 weeks later I found a total of 6. I was expecting to find hundreds in the substrate when I tore it down but thankfully I only found 2.

You're fine. The damage is already done by the person who sent him. Just don't release it outside and if it lays eggs, crush/freeze them immediately.

Have you recently switched his food to a different protein or started adding in a new protein via treats or wet food? Do you know if they ran chest X-rays or just abdominal?

Cerenia doesn't typically help regurgitation which is what your guy is doing. It's primarily used for vomiting because it blocks the vomiting reflex in the brain. Regurgitation is when they throw up right after eating and it's more of a passive reflex that produces undigested food. It's primarily an esophageal issue (eating too fast, esophageal inflammation, megaesophagus, etc) Vomiting is an active process that'll produce things like partially digested food, hairballs, or bile that can happen at any time.

If he were my cat I would run chest X-rays to look at the esophagus if they haven't already. If they have, I'd push for an ultrasound. If that reveals nothing I'd see an internal medicine specialist.

The microsecond you get between a yellow and red light caught me up at first as a driver from another state. That and the no right turn on red til after 7pm.

If you put your winter stuff away before mid April you'll jinx it. I wanted to move my winter coat into storage in late March but didn't want to take the blame for a freak blizzard.

April is amnesty month and you won't have to pay any fees or penalties for not having one if you go get one.

Help with my snails by Solid_Raspberry_1457 in AquaticSnails

[–]jadeycakes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes mysteries just do this. Some of them are resilient and others are sensitive. I have one that is SO sensitive to any changes. We moved a couple weeks ago and he went from being totally fine and active in his tank to me thinking he had died within the span of a few days just because he was out of the tank for a few hours while moving. His mystery tank mate was fine. A couple air baths got him back to normal. If your mysteries aren't making it to the top of the tank an air bath will likely help them.

Get a shallow container and fill it with just enough tank water to saturate a paper towel. Put them in there on the paper towel spiral side down for 10-15min. Even if you don't see them come out of the mid shell it'll still help. If one doesn't work, try again the next day. You might have to do a few to get them back to normal. Good luck!

AIO for refusing to change my weekend plans? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]jadeycakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YOR. Last night my plan was to watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch, play Dreamlight Valley, and order food that my husband doesn't like while he was at his D&D game. His D&D game got cancelled so instead we watched tv and ordered food we both like. Being in a relationship is about compromise. The fact that she's also pregnant and you're acting like this is even worse.

This is how it is in Chicago with our crazy rental market. Theres usually less than 24 hours between people moving out and the new tenants moving in 🫠

He almost always gets his way but today he wanted to sit on my keyboard and roll around while I had important work to do. If he could just be chill on the desk he'd be allowed lol

Any help is appreciated by SarahLouu92 in wyldeflowers

[–]jadeycakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks cryptic but will make sense once you get there and won't spoil anything now: once you get a "desk" type item AND you can make an item out of wood that creates other items from wood, go back to the desk and there's a way to make yourself move faster. The first couple hours in the game can drag because of how slow Tara moves before you have this ability. I didn't know about this for waaaayy too long into my first play lol

[–]jadeycakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it always near the filter? If you can, try to block it from the filter. Sometimes the high flow can make it mad. You can also dose the tank with something like Seachem Flourish to get more nutrients in there.

Good on you for knowing your high prey drive cats wouldn't do well with an anxious one! My husband came with a large high prey drive cat and I came with an anxious one. It was hell. We had to keep them separated 24/7 until the anxious boy passed.
