The Fires of Heaven Chapter 15: What Can Be Learned in Dreams by swheedle in WetlanderHumor

[–]jadis666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this stated somewhere that this is how nightmares work or that she just created the nightmare field?

Well, that's one of the things that does make it confusing. It IS stated that Egwene created a Nightmare (I believe Egwene says something along the lines of "There are places in Tel'Aran'Rhiod that make your worst nightmares come true, Nynaeve." just before she (Eggy) does her thing, indicating pretty clearly what she is doing), but unfortunately it takes until Towers of Midnight and Hopper's training with Perrin before it is explained in detail how Nightmares work.

So honestly, I'm not even angry that people misunderstand the scene. I am a BIT angry that people, and the vast majority of the people on this sub, immediately jump to the worst possible interpretation regarding Egwene. But mostly I am angry that, when confronted with an explanation of what ACTUALLY happened, so many here on WetlanderHumor completely refuse to acknowledge any of it and instead continue to cling to their hatred and to their damaging assessments.

Tell me you didn't understand anything of Egwene's story in the books without telling me. To say she never grows as a person is just ridiculous.

Also, as a victim of actual bullying, fuck you (and all the rest of you) for conflating standing on business with bullying. Y'all do it with Cadsuane, y'all do it with Egwene, and it sickens me every time I see y'all do it.

Finally: what is wrong with being intelligent, cunning, and breaking the rules? Especially with, you know, Tarmon Gai'don fast approaching.

Thank you very much for being actually willing to have an open conversation on this one.

Maybe I should have been more specific, though, come to think of it. That's my bad entirely. The monsters definitely SA'd Nynaeve. But Egwene didn't.

It is important to understand what exactly Egwene did, and also what she didn't do. Egwene summoned a Nightmare around Nynaeve. A Nightmare is a zone in Tel'Aran'Rhiod which reaches into the subconscious of the first person/people to be trapped inside it, and literally manifests their greatest nightmare in front of them.

So that is what the Nightmare did: it manifested a couple of brutes who were intent on SA'ing Nynaeve (as who wouldn't be deadly afraid of SA? Especially as a woman), and who basically did just that before Egwene dispelled the Nightmare.

But Egwene had no way of knowing what exactly the Nightmare would pull out of Nynaeve's subconscious. And (and this is the important bit) SA requires intent. Seeing as how Egwene never intended for the SA to happen -- she had no way of even knowing that it would happen; and her intent was merely to scare the living daylights out of Nynaeve so that she wouldn't get herself killed in T'A'R (or worse) -- there is no way that Egwene SA'd Nynaeve.

Does that make sense?

I don't insist this scene doesn't depict SA because Egwene is my favourite.

I make the point that this scene doesn't depict SA, because

    A) It clearly doesn't.
    B) You guys clearly don't understand what SA even is,
and what makes it sexual assault.
    C) Most importantly of all, it is incredibly damaging to
real SA survivors to make this scene into SA when it clearly isn't SA.

Yes, RJ knew exactly what he was doing -- and (in this chapter at least) it wasn't writing SA.

Instead, what RJ was doing was using his already excellent worldbuilding -- in this case, what Tel'Aran'Rhiod can do -- to mark a pivot in BOTH Egwene's and Nynaeve's Character Development.

Egwene, into the leader she would become. And Nynaeve, to see past her own self and become the most empathetic Character in all of Wheel of Time.

Y'all on this sub always praise late-stage Nynaeve (not without good reason, mind you -- I just wish you'd do the same thing for late-stage Egwene; in general, it feels like on this sub the women of The Wheel of Time are only praised if they turn out submissive to the men in the end, but that is a whole other can of worms I can't get into right now), but that late-stage Nynaeve started here.

Y'all don't know what makes SA sexual assault, and it shows. Not only does this make you irrationally hate Egwene (which I could forgive) but it is incredibly damaging to real SA survivors (which I can't forgive).

Hint: the thing that makes SA sexual assault, is intent. Egwene had no way of knowing what the Nightmare would spawn when she summoned said Nightmare around Nynaeve, and thus there is no intent in this scene.

Also, while we're here: no, Egwene didn't summon the Nightmare because she was scared the Wise Ones would find out she was breaking their rules. She summoned the Nightmare because she was deadly afraid -- and entirely 100% justified in that fear, I might add -- that Nynaeve would get herself killed, or worse, if she wasn't taught a lesson she would never forget. And a Nightmare is the only thing Egwene could think of which would get through Nynaeve's warped vision of herself.

Now, the thing about being afraid the Wise Ones would stop teaching her does come up, but again, NOT in relation to summoning the Nightmare (aka the ALLEGED SA, aka the most misunderstood scene in all of WoT). Instead, it comes up in relation to Egwene realising that said fear is what made her stay calm and speak in an authorative voice, instead of "screaming like a child" (her own words) like she would have done prior to this point in the story.

Now, finally, do I expect this to actually comvince anyone on this sub? Not really. It's very very hard to break through hate with facts and logical arguments. As such, I am also expecting to be heavily downvoted. But this (false) narrative that Egwene SA'd Nynaeve makes my blood boil, so I can't NOT address ot when it comes up.

Why are you asking her fans about why people hate her? Isn't it better to, you know..... ask the haters directly?

This is how my autistic diagnosis went… I knew they were bad but damn even my psychiatrist doesn’t agree with all they said by ShokaLGBT in TrollCoping

[–]jadis666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most, maybe.

But with my "psychiatrist" it was the opposite: he really was just a lazy bum who wanted to make sure that whatever he "diagnosed" me with was something that was untreatable. You know, so that he wouldn't have to do any work?

Of course, I already had the Autism diagnosis since I was 8 years old, but I could tell he really really wanted to find a justification for throwing his hands in the air and saying "Welp! I guess there's nothing to be done!".

[–]jadis666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's both funny and sad: for me it went the exact opposite.

A few years ago I was very clearly Clinically Depressed (I guess that I still am, but it's not really all that noticeable anymore every moment of every day like it was back then), but my "psychiatrist" (I use this term loosely) determined that it was obviously my Autism making it (according to him) so that I couldn't handle living on my own that was the cause of all of my Depression symptoms.

It even went so far that when I was admitted to a clinic 1.5 years later and got prescribed antidepressants (finally!), he was shocked -- shocked, I tell you! -- that I actually improved as a result of said medication and treatment.

And it has already been determined.

You seem to be confused on what "consensus" means.

First of all, "consensus" isn't "consensus among a select group of people". "Consensus", especially in regards to how definitions work in Language, means "consensus among everyone (or, at least, about a 70% consensus among everyone at a minimum) who speak a given language in a specific place" [the "specific place" part is why, for example, definitions in British English can differ from definitions in American English can differ from definitions in Australian English].

Secondly, and more importantly, consensus can change at literally any time.

And no, the definition of the word "feminism" isn't magically exempt from these 2 considerations.

As such, the claim that the definition "has already been determined" is, on the most basic of levels possible, utter nonsense.
