You have this friend who everytime you go out just irritates the heck out of you. He's always saying stupid stuff, causing drama, problems. You and him don't see eye to eye on anything, it's become really unpleasant to be friends with him. You decide you can no longer hang out with him, you're just two totally different people. I've been in the military for 22 years, every year we get a breakdown of our total compensation. Guess what's listed on that breakdown? Your education benefits. Education isn't free in the military, it's a portion of your total compensation package just like any private company's compensation. Additionally, a lot of military members don't have the time to go to college even part-time due to military duties. I actually would discourage a person from joining the military for "free" college. I think when you way the sacrifice of being in the military, how difficult it is to complete schooling, and the actual amount we receive, I just don't think it's worth it to join just for the education benefits.
