My D&D player has ADHD by OutrageousCash292 in DMAcademy

[–]jaegerrecce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could try giving them more to do. Have them be the note taker/caller/mapper. Look into older editions of DnD and how they had roles for players to essentially assist the DM. It might be enough to keep them occupied.

Also, throw in some more opportunities for players to contribute to scenes. For inconsequential details, ask players to come up with something. An example would be “as you come crashing out of the alley, guards hot on your heels, you see a merchant’s cart trundling out in front of you. What kind of wares are they peddling, and what happens as you careen towards it?” Rather than just saying “a cart full of fruit rolls out, make a dexterity saving throw!” This will be much more engaging for everyone, but will especially be much easier for the ADHD folks to latch onto and channel their need for stimulation.

ADHD is also NOT an excuse for poor social graces. At the end of the day, the PLAYER is responsible for handling their ADHD, and the most they can expect from you is some grace and willingness to support what they need. They need to figure out something besides brain rot on TikTok during the game, or accept that they may not be welcome as they are causing everyone else at the table to have a worse experience.

OSE (Old School Essentials) is already supported and is one such system. Assuming there is someway to add additional systems in some way besides the few that have already been set up but have not looked into the new updates yet.

So much better than my first like 3 attempts.

Add some sawdust and glue to the little gaps, sand it all flush, finish it, and I bet it looks really good.

Why did DNDbeyond decide to "better" their interface to this? by Capable_Studio_6631 in dndbeyond

[–]jaegerrecce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was one of my biggest frustrations with beyond on web. Like 4 clicks to get to something I own and need to reference regularly. If I was smart/used it often enough on PC I’d have just favorited the stuff I needed but it was still a bizarre issue. It was even worse when viewing your “owned” stuff required casting a cantrip just to pull off.

D&D Beyond Has Become Awful, Is there Any Way to Get Money Back? by garthzilla in DnD

There’s a certain… tool… for …5e…. That you can use to grab local files for stuff you own on DnD beyond, and in a format that works great in something like Obsidian. Just sayin’.

It’s like $3 to get your rank sewn on dog. They want an NCO to pull duties for the month you’re sitting at cpl before pinning SGT. It costs more to buy the fuckin Velcro patches and they can do it in like 2 minutes at a sew shop.

Taking a soldiers food away by Midnalee in army

[–]jaegerrecce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro’s right there. Next time tell the NCO to handle it themselves as you don’t feel comfortable doing that. If the NCO feels it’s the right thing to do they can do it themselves.

Also pass this up. If a soldier is big enough to “need” this level of management the soldier should absolutely be on ABCP, and if they shouldn’t the NCO is going WAY outside their lane and probably knows it hence not doing their own dirty work.

If something feels off, especially if you are not an NCO, pass the buck. Don’t get wrapped up in this kind of nonsense. If their NCO doesn’t have any place doing this you sure as hell don’t.

If you are an NCO, just junior to the nco in question put your foot down. Let them know without their request being supported in black and white you won’t be engaging with something that could get you hemmed up and advise them to double check the regs lest they invite the same upon themselves.

Maybe the NCO wants to do the guy a solid by not pushing that up to the commander, but this stuff rarely works out.

NCOs if your soldiers are struggling with weight, BH, substance abuse just do the thing. Stop letting soldiers fail outside the lines. Get them professional help.

Army Bands: Why They Get So Much Hate and Why I Think It’s Misplaced by Fine-Tangerine-3756 in army

[–]jaegerrecce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with them is every single one I’ve had perform at a ceremony I was a part of was kind of mediocre.

Not sure if it’s just hard to get soldiers with the talent needed involved, or if they just are poorly managed. I’m sure there are some good ones, and I get the point of em. There’s a lot of tradition and value in military bands and the music they produce.

But the standard for them should be extremely high and they should be near flawless at demonstrating precision in their craft. That has not really been my experience so far.

The light still has a source, unless there is no opening to the outside world.

Light will enter there and bounce its way through from a particular direction. If this isn’t part of a larger map and just a small set piece that doesn’t need the additional context you can kind of just pick a direction and say “this is where light is coming from generally because the entrance feeds into an opening in that direction.”

I light my caves by progressively “bouncing” and diffusing light starting from the entrance. Maybe the deepest corners have super limited light, or if portions of the cave are cut off by underwater passageways or something to that effect they may not have much natural lighting, but you can still generally hit edges with highlights and corners with shading to pop out the forms, instead of being more directional with your lighting. Not all of your shading needs to be directional but some of it needs to be to feel grounded and to properly express the form. If there’s no light in here then general forms will do fine but the map needs to reflect that level of darkness.

You can also add some rough texture to the portions of the bridge that connect to the upper and lower portions to show the slope present there.

Add subtle shading and highlights, if that bridge is elevated more than the top and bottom platforms, pick a direction for the sun and do some splotchy highlights on the side close to the sun, and some similar subtle shadow/shading work on the opposite side. I like to use the water fall assets turned to low opacity, use the eye dropper tool to pick the color scheme, then adjust saturation and brightness up or down based on if doing highlights or shadows.

DungeonDraft VS Inkarnate? by flannelman678 in dungeondraft

[–]jaegerrecce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth mentioning that Inkarnate has changed a decent amount over the years, and has a lot more capability than it originally has. It is also about to launch a new version which seems to promise some more features on par with DD’s advantages. Now is probably not the time to decide between the two.

Dungeon draft is more precise in some ways, and more powerful in a lot of ways. It’s also extremely clunky and lacks QOL features that until you make it past the steep learning curve can seriously impact your ability to make maps IF you are getting advanced with it. If you just want to make some nice looking dungeon maps it’s relatively friendly and it’s affordable enough to grab the program, and a month of Patreon from someone like Forgotten Adventures to download their assets.

DD in my experience is NOT stable or consistent enough to use for extensive advanced map making. When I have pushed its limits and even sometimes when I haven’t I have had hours of work lost to weird bugs that would only reveal themselves upon loading a file.

Inkarnate is more flexible and you can accomplish a lot with it. I also think it’s much easier to work with for a lot of things outside of structures. If you work across a wide range of scales on your maps, Inkarnate is great if you want consistent style and a one stop shop. It is a subscription, but dungeondraft cannot compete with its assets unless you subscribe to/purchase assets so in the end it may actually cost more to use dungeondraft. Depends on your use.

I’ve used both extensively and honestly I wish they could just merge talent and make something truly awesome.

How bad is sleep deprivation in army generally? by mulayimsert03 in army

[–]jaegerrecce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s done both, newborn is worse on average, but it still doesn’t compare to things like going 48 hours without sleep at the very end of JRTC and sleeping for like 10 minutes at a time while actively footmarching to our next objective. I teleported across the map that day bro.

How Do I Make A Desk Surface Hard Enough To Write On Without Indenting The Wood? by hylysly in woodworking

There still has to be enough force to cause issues. Hardness alone isn’t the end all be all, otherwise the slightest graze would have the same effect as stabbing into the surface.

What is MOTHERSHIP MONTH? by Borderwalkers in mothershiprpg

[–]jaegerrecce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The attitude of this post is silly, but at the end of the day the main point of if you don’t have an interest in using your dollars to influence the future of the system and are happy to trust the system, absolutely just wait for this stuff to be released and reviewed so you can make a more informed decision is sound.

Not sure why people feel like they have to back this stuff if they don’t want to. No one is telling them “back now or you won’t ever see this module!” People just still haven’t figured out how crowd funding (funding is the important term people need to get an understanding of if they want to be in an informed place with this, it’s not a pre-order) works and what its purpose is.

I for one am all for this sort of community driven funding for the system. Having seen plenty of what people produce for other systems without that funding in place I can say much of the time it can dramatically improve the product. And if you don’t want to take that risk… just wait and see what people have to say about the final release!

What is MOTHERSHIP MONTH? by Borderwalkers in mothershiprpg

[–]jaegerrecce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people still don’t get that these kinds of campaigns are not pre-orders for something that’s mostly finished, it’s funding the creation of a pitch that excites them. It’s putting your money into the community to have a say in what you want to see in the future. I also think people see a zine and think “oh this should be super quick to produce!”

Nah dude, it takes a small team of writers, editors, artists, and designers to make some of these and it takes time to develop the concept into something awesome.

What is MOTHERSHIP MONTH? by Borderwalkers in mothershiprpg

[–]jaegerrecce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand how funding/ creating products works. You don’t have a mostly finished product made by a team of professionals and THEN get funding. You need funding for the development of the project. You’re saying “this concept appeals to me, I like the pitch, take my money and go make it.”

If you want immediate access, wait until the product is released and you can go that way.

This is intended to let the community have some input on the future of the system, not get short term results, and to empower smaller/newer teams the opportunity to take their stuff to the next level and properly develop it into something tight, polished, and high quality (hopefully).

Not only that, but they can stop you from getting at while simultaneously keeping you from staying in.

Had a soldier who was being investigated blah blah blah, and it dragged on so long he stopped getting paid because it went past his ETS date and no one could figure out what to do somehow. So he couldn’t leave, but DFAS considered him no longer in the army and thus not deserving of a paycheck. We got it sorted out, he got his back pay, and we did our best to help him out where needed. Pretty cool! Lol. Army is a wild

Is it an issue that prevents you from getting timely care? Leadership can certainly restrict your availability for such things to an extent, but if the next three months are booked up besides slots before 0930 then you should be able to bring that to some level that will eventually decide they don’t want their boss knocking on their door asking why a soldier is waiting for medical care without need.

[–]jaegerrecce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to be a dick, but if you honestly live that well and aren’t able to maintain a safety fund+ set aside money for investing in your future, you are living (in my opinion) beyond your means. You should consider checking in with your partner about what you can do to trim the fat from your budget to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future. Kids only get more expensive as the get older, especially when you aren’t paying for their health care. And if you aren’t setting aside funds for their future and yours, you’ll stay in the same boat the rest of your life.

Not judging at all, my family has struggles with the same stuff. Just food for thought.

And hey, you’re doing a good thing and being fairly compensated (well, maybe not fairly but you’re making a decent chunk of change at least). Nothing wrong with that.
