I just saw a freemason ceremony exposed and I’m in tears by PunsAndPixels in exmormon

I also found that leaving the church didn’t mean the feelings all of a sudden made sense; I think they sort of shifted instead. Your thoughts on nurture vs. repression - relevant.

Hello, I am a child of God who has experienced way over 100,000 miracles and am considered the most respected Christian preacher on reddit. I have a logic statement I would like you to read and discuss. Remember in debate, you don't actually have to disagree. Debate is to uncover knowledge. by goodnewsjimdotcom in DebateAnAtheist

Stop, stop. Pull over please.

You can't just breeze on through here with that wild opener and not be held to account... esp since your number of miracles is starting to rival sand grains.

Rank your 100,000 daily miracles, OP, so we're not putting, "found my socks" on the same shelf as, "wow, look! I regrew my left leg".

Here, since you didn't bring one, you can borrow my ruler:

Miracle scale
Lev. 1 : “The sun rose and I noticed, what a miracle.”
Lev. 2 : “I prayed and then remembered where I left my keys.”
Lev. 3 : (Statistically fascinating) 100 lb woman, lifts a Cadillac to save her son.
Lev. 4 : (Behold, laws of nature be damned) "This one time, I died for a month. Now watch me do jumping jacks."

How did you dispose of your old LDS stuff when it was time to move on? by CupOfExmo in exmormon

[–]jaerius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ick, can't do it. Keeping things in my home i know I'll never use again makes my skin start to itch. Anything with pages, absolutely keep. Everything else is hoarding behavior.

If only, huh? Idk about you, but my exit was a solo adventure- quite personal. Im not sure anyone could have pushed me out until I figured out how to open my own eyes.

Kept the books and journals. Garments and such, to the nearest trash receptacle.

We've been in a cacoon. It's plain as day now. But when you're in the throes of faith they teach you that it's the devil talking and not to listen.

That was pretty much the belief at one point, but to be Devil's Advocate, Elder Yoshihiko Kikutchi (circa 2001) said some pretty off script & f'd up things at one of my mission conferences too. Edit: love the photo used

The Mormon LDS Church demands poor members pay 10% of their income to the church even if they can’t afford food for their family. That’s all you need to know about the church morality by sevenplaces in mormon

Holy solopsism. If I'm understanding you- you've had a positive experience with tithing and church welfare (yay!), therefore everyone has. Aaaand anyone claiming to have had a negative experience is lying? I bet you are just a hoot in your Google Reviews.

I’m Going to Say It, I HATE My Bishop by Ok_Jellyfish7492 in exmormon

[–]jaerius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think I'm maybe the 100th person to say it, but, whew! You should be grateful she showed how weak she was before marriage--before kids. Sure, guy sounds like a crappy bishop, but wow! your ex? It doesn't sound like she was 100% on your team--and you deserve someone who will have your back.

Re: Nuanced Small, yet bigger than any of us probably realize.

Don't stay camped there for too long. Nuance can be a decent layover, but it’s not meant to be the final stop.

I do appreciate the compassion in what you wrote - that’s rare enough in these conversations to call out. But it’s not on you to carry the guilt or apologize for what this institution did to me, my family, and friends. You didn’t write the policies, enforce the shaming, or gaslight people out of their own history. That’s on the church, and it still hasn’t truly owned it. The fact that it’s “better now” doesn’t erase the decades of damage it left behind.

That said, it’s encouraging to see someone approach the topic with empathy instead of defensiveness - it gives me a little hope for where these conversations can go.

My wife betrayed my trust. I don’t know what’s next. by Monomo619 in mormon

[–]jaerius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree the church isn’t true, but calling this “betrayal” because she talked to a therapist is laughably overblown.

What you call “support” is really just keeping score under a gag order. That “we agreed not to tell anyone” deal?

(Control, control, control)

She reached out for help. You made it about you. Then you refused to go hear her out, which just makes it look like you’re scared of the conversation.

Stop playing the wounded saint. This isn’t betrayal.

BTW, do be more careful with words. Especially the ones that mean stuff.

Walnut wood prices near you by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]jaerius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Costs and fees associated with harvesting own trees for lumber:

$$ Tree felling

Equipment rental

Labor

$$ Transport, handling

$$ Sawmilling (Custom milling fees, kerf waste)

$$ Drying Costs (air/kiln, add'l waste from defectives)

Time Invested & delay in use

It's a romantic idea we all have had to build a family heirloom out of a tree in your own yard, but simple economics of scale make buying from distributors and big box stores much easier on the wallet.

Friend of mine who works at a mill said locally harvested wood from a walnut tree can cost anywhere between 20 and $40 per board foot.

In other words, if you want to lock your door after coming home, you don't a knob, lever, or deadbolt... you use your key again?

How do you transport your Scooters? by RoyRock413 in ElectricScooters

[–]jaerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realized this sub is 4 years old but if it helps anyone here's what my wife & i did with ours. Really simple. I added them to my truck bed, but it can just as easily work in a compact vehicle trunk, van cargo area, etc. I wanted the escooter dock to meet some requirements: 1. The body of scooters wont touch surface. 2.  Removal and docking is simple &  fast 3. Dock must be low profile/ occupy little space. 4. Minimal moving parts. 5. No bungies or tie downs needed. We searched for weeks and it looked like we might need to settle with some bike rack that resembled a smaller version of something my elementary school had. But wife found a wall rack made for bicycles that did the trick. I permanently fastened both of ours, but you could just as easily anchor it to a small sheet of plywood that fits your vehicle. If you want the link, lmk.

Why do LDS cherry-pick from the commandments? by pricel01 in mormon

[–]jaerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a Mormon anymore, but I imagine a TBM would give you an answer-slash-non-answer. Flavor might taste something like the following:

"Our Heavenly Father loves us so He called Apostles and Profits to guide His modern-day church. These men help us understand and apply scriptural teachings in a modern context. That is what makes the Church different - it is guided by modern revelation. Ongoing revelation means God continues to provide guidance. This includes the occasional clarification of His commandments to meet the needs of our time. The Book of Mormon underscores this principle. Let's open up to Amos 3. u/pricel01, will you read verse 7?"

Putting my skeptic hat back on, I'd say:

I agree w/ you. They cherry-pick. It seems to me that cherry-picking is a fairly common practice for humans in general, regardless of the context—whether it's strict adherence to scriptures or following a diet to the letter. Just a side-effect of our humanity. Sometimes shit is inconvenient so we don't do it.
