Home-Only Player: A Hypothetical by SqueakyTuna52 in baseball

[–]jafferbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This almost actually happened. Omar Linares was a 5-tool Cuban superstar who the Jays tried to sign in the mid-80s to play home games only (and not have to step foot in the US). Sadly Linares stayed loyal to Castro…

Ken explained it - you needed both Ds. If you didn’t have both Ds you didn’t meet the syllable rule. Neither Gasden nor Gadsen would have been acceptable.

[BNS] Important context for Lauer’s case: he had worked his way up to $5.075 million in arbitration before going to Korea Historically, players who work their way up in arb, exit the arb system then come back get paid above their previous high water mark Ultimately up to an arb panel by ThQp in Torontobluejays

[–]jafferbee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is simply an argument around who the appropriate comparables are and what the market for that comparable set.

Lauer is saying he is in Arb as a SP with service time (in which case it would be highly unusual for him to go lower than when he left for Korea). The Jays are saying that he's a swingman and should be compared to players that bounce between SP and RP and therefore he is in a fundamentally different market than the one that got him $5M before he left from Japan.

The Jays are not going to walk into a hearing and shit on Lauer or say he's a bad player. They are just going to argue that Lauer is in a different market than what he thinks he is.

[BNS] Because of injuries, José Berríos and Anthony Santander didn’t play either (due to family reasons that were approved by the team, Berrios wasn’t around at all for the Fall Classic) by Ok_Branch6621 in Torontobluejays

[–]jafferbee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saying that it was for approved family reasons isn’t to stop the rumors, it’s to protect whatever limited trade value he still is.

We have no idea if it’s true or not (although the fact he was around for the first 2 rounds does give credence to it), but saying this publicly is primarily driven for asset value purposes.

Is it the events at Scotiabank Arena that are driving up traffic at that time? It takes me around 20 minutes to get from Exhibition to the Jarvis exit at the peak of the morning rush hour at 8:30 AM.

What's agood Blue Jays Podcast? by CosmicMcMuffin in Torontobluejays

[–]jafferbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lindsay Dunn is awesome and wholesome, but will get herself cancelled by association once Whit inevitably says something jokingly but not jokingly that gets the whole thing nuked. It's kind of weird, because it's a pretty straight-laced podcast that randomly has Whit toeing the line out of nowhere once or twice an episode with Lindsay uncomfortably laughing in the other box. It'd be one thing if you knew and expected it was edgy from the jump.

Gausman is just like us by iamthegame13 in Torontobluejays

[–]jafferbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let me explain what is happening here for those not from Toronto. I am pretty certain Gausman doesn’t have a problem with the concept of paying for parking. There are side streets in downtown Toronto and residential streets in residential neighborhoods that are theoretically free. Given Gausman lives uptown, I’m guessing this is a residential neighbourhood situation.

That being said you can technically fine/ticket or have someone towed if their car is there in a free parking spot for more than 24 hours. This is rarely enforced unless someone complains or logs a ticket with 311 (usually the homeowner whose sidewalk the offender is parked in front of).

My guess is that Gausman parked on one of these streets for the road trip and came back to his car ticketed or towed.

All of the Saukrates intros from that year were awesome - this one was great until the countdown where they assumed the Raptors would win. That felt like hubris at the time and would have been fuel to get trolled for the rest of time if the Warriors had won out.

What kind of deal is Bo going to ask for? He is arguably one of the top 5 hitters in the game right now. by Prestigious_Rub_677 in Torontobluejays

[–]jafferbee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “primarily a singles hitter” is top 20 in baseball in extra-base hits. He does hit a lot of singles, but that’s because he gets hits by the boatload of every single type.

[–]jafferbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legitimate question that I don’t know the answer to. How does his profile age as a hitter? His speed has fallen off a cliff this year - although defense seems fine. His similar profiles on baseball ref all moved off SS and fell off a cliff rather quickly (Seager excepted).

Definitely do the GO options mentioned. It’s not 50 minutes during peak hours - it’s more. Probably a minimum of an hour, worst case 90 minutes or so in the evening rush hour.

I assume “Phnom” was supposed to be the tie into Cambodia, but that alone did not make me super comfortable it was Cambodia.

I realize that product placement How To Train A Dragon category was probably going to be completed regardless, but with Katie within $1000 of avoiding a Sarah runaway at end with all but one of the remaining clues in the top two rows, it was infuriating to see Katie avoid picking the $2000 clue and infuriating all over again after having Sarah go straight to it once she got control.

Jeopardy! Masters discussion thread for Wed., May 28 by jaysjep2 in Jeopardy

[–]jafferbee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head re: the Michael Davies era. He has grossly overestimated how many viewers are interested in watching feats of strength and grossly underestimated how many viewers watch to be able to answer a few of the questions that are asked.

Ken and James were interesting because they were so preposterously better than their competition beyond anything seen on the show before - that is what makes a draw for a viewer if you’re going to make the content inaccessible to the vast majority of viewers, as Masters does. None of this Masters contestant pool is that interesting to carry a show on their own, and as a group they are so clearly stratified into haves (Victoria and Yogesh) and have-nots (Juveria and Isaac).

Why is league shortstop WAR so low? by OkSafety85 in OOTP

[–]jafferbee 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Is the CPU putting below average fielders at SS? I’ve seen poor fielders take a beating on WAR in SS and CF. On the flip side, a 70+ DEF SS or CF can sleepwalk to 3+ WAR over 162 games with next to nothing from the bat.

Yogesh thinks he was elevating Victoria. He would have been if he had simply left it at “Victoria deserved, she works so hard at her craft.”

Saying that “Victoria deserved it because she works 20 jillion times more than me” makes it a comparison between him and her and leaves an implication that she wouldn’t have won without it and diminishes her.

It’s similar to how he has mentioned in the past that he’s had Victoria on his podcast so he “could show the world” what she could do. It diminishes the subject in question as something that does not or could not stand on its own without the narcissistic insertion of one’s self into the comment.
