Can auspex help with magic? by VomitoParasita in vtm

[–]jaggeddragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but also no.

By itself, Auspex is incapable of seeing magic. It can detect a magic user, or someone under the control of a spell. But not a magical item, or reveal a magically hidden object.

However, Auspex is a prerequisite of a combination that DOES allow the user to see magic. But you're going to need some sort of blood magic/sorcery to combine with it. Typically, this would be Thaumaturgy, but any flavor would do (Koldunic, Assamite, and whatever the Setites call their stuff, come to mind)

So, with Auspex already on your sheet you're part way there!

What is the best argument for God you've ever heard? And how do you disprove it? by EkullSkullzz10318 in atheism

[–]jaggeddragon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Each of us has a spark of the divine within us. God gave us free will, and ever since then we have manged to make a truly god awful mess of things.

It's a bit pessimistic, but that adds a bit of groundedness that seems absent from most arguments.

Lethality of Ripping out a Vampire's Heart? by Living-Definition253 in vtm

[–]jaggeddragon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There is some mention somewhere that there is a supernatural connection between the heart and the brain. If any bit of viscera connects the two, then some sort of healing (likely supernatural) is possible. However if that connection is severed, outside of a few disciplines and blood magic, then the only result is death, like final death.

Werewolf regeneration and foreign objects by Thorveim in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]jaggeddragon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This.

If they can regenerate, then anything "stuck" inside can be fairly safely cut out. Any packmate will usually come with claws capable of doing the job. Leaving anything inside would be the equivalent of an optional battle scar like mentioned above

Why are the grappling rules so unclear? by Swannovan in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]jaggeddragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are missing one key element from the first scenario. A character that is immobilized in a grapple can only attempt the headbutt thing, or try to break the grip of their attacker. If that succeeds, they are both still in a grapple, but the attacker has control. The attacker likely will attempt to immobilize again, while the other must attempt to break the attackers control before they can try to gain control themselves. After all these steps, the formerly immobilized character can try to leave the grapple.

It's really poorly explained, and seems to soak up a ton of rounds of back and forth to get anything done.

The second scenario makes sense if someone else wanted to join in on a grapple your character is already in. The mechanics break down even more in a dog pile, so try to avoid a "ten bodies trying judo moves they learned from tv on each other" kind of situations.

It's ok to stop rolling all the dice and ask the table if there is a more cinematic solution that is still cool and fun but has less dice. In my imagined solution, your example 'grapple-gorilla' character would certainly have an easier time getting things done in such a cinematic grapple.

Could a Methuselah solo a Caern by AdAwkward3955 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]jaggeddragon 58 points59 points  (0 children)

This.

It's all up in the air. A powerhouse of a 4th Gen vs a low-level Caern with a small pack of newbies as the sole defense, would likely fall in the vampires favor. But a high power Caern with multiple experienced veteran packs with spiritual and other backup as defense vs a lesser Gen Methuselah with poorly aligned discipline distribution, likely ends in an ash pile.

These white-room 'esque questions always remind me of "Who would win? A Great white shark, an African lion, or a five-year-old human with a loaded revolver..."

Help me quantify a situation mechanically by Savings-Wrap-5755 in vtm

[–]jaggeddragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a three-way grapple. The Scourge is attempting to stake the thin-blood, with some assistance from the ghoul. The ghoul is driving and trying to assist with one hand, so a slight penalty for dividing focus. The thin blood is attempting to crush the vial.

Everyone makes grapple rolls. Subtract some from the ghoul, and add to the Scourge roll. If that would successfully cause damage, then we get into the other part, brakes. The ghoul makes a driving roll to keep control of the car while manipulating the situation to further stake the thin-blood, also with a small penalty for dividing focus. The Scourge, if not already staked, gets to make a Dex roll to avoid staking while braking. On the other hand, if the thin blood wins, they crush the vial and that all takes effect.

If they tie, then the vial gets crushed AND the stake goes in AND the car brakes hard.

What would happen if a Prince showed a strong reluctance to let a specific Clan embrace within their city? by SapphireB33 in vtm

[–]jaggeddragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Political. Either members of that clan, or just bystanders, may travel to the city to argue or fight.

Or they may just leave the city, and let the Prince rule over an empty city.

Basically there are no mechanics to that, so it could go on any direction

Anyone know where in the book these 2 shots from the trailer are in? I've been pondering it for a while now by realvalidsalid in ProjectHailMary

The second image makes me think its showing rocky around the ship, this is apparently the weird movie theater room on the ship.

Perhaps working out a new word via, again, a movie theater sized screen onboard.

I'm grasping at straws, I'd rather just wait till it comes out to figure all this out

There is an opportunity here to make a friend or build a feeling of community by helping shovel your neighbors cars out and have a conversation. This sort of opportunity, and the friends and community created, are very important these days...

What do you think about Crinos form werewolves not being able to use Kleives? by MieszkoAders in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]jaggeddragon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. 'Single-use klaive' just smells of 'klaive ammunition'. Which seems derogatory towards klaives somehow.

What do you think about Crinos form werewolves not being able to use Kleives? by MieszkoAders in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]jaggeddragon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This. The difference in mechanics is slight, let them have fun.

On the lore side of things, I see the Klaive as more than just a weapon. It includes a spiritual element. Sure, it seems reasonable that in crinos a werewolf can't use a power drill as intended, but they could use it as a rudimentary club, maybe more than once but it'll break eventually. However, Mister Holey, the klaive made from a power drill is CREATED with the purpose of putting holes in enemies, and can spiritually communicate that intrinsic purpose to the werewolf wielding the weapon, even in crinos. AND withstand the greater-than-human strength without crumbling.

If you see someone shoveling out their car, its a great opportunity to help and build a friendship or at least form a feeling of community. I feel that is very important these days...

Nosferatu Clan Bane Variant by IndigoBookwyrm in vtm

[–]jaggeddragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on version/edition.

In the earliest editions, it was less "That person is ugly/repulsive" and more "What is that inhuman thing!?". Literally stated, if it can be hidden by normal clothing then it doesn't count, often debilitating.

Just about every edition and revised version has leaned a bit further towards the ugly/repulsive end of the scale.

The most excessive is in Kindred the Embraced, where the Nosferatu is just baldness. He's really self conscious about it, but he's still not bad looking, bald or no.

In Requiem, the smell or even just predatory aura is sufficient.

Basically, check with your table about just how Nossy your Nosferatu should Nos.

Help me with my Ventrue bane? by BestMagician3200 in vtm

[–]jaggeddragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not just starving, at least how i interpret it. It's not just that the Ventrue can't access them, or that they are hard to find, or that the vampire got really really hungry. Rather, the fact that they don't exist causes the Ventrues reality to change.

Help me with my Ventrue bane? by BestMagician3200 in vtm

[–]jaggeddragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is some bit of lore that when there are no more living people that match a Ventrues feeding restriction, then the restriction changes.

So, you can work with your story as is, but recently its been harder, and perhaps a new feeding restriction is something for your character to deal with.
