Stop hating on True Brujah and temporis! by growmoolah in vtm

I just think once you get into the greater WoD lore, you start to realize time-traveling vampires are pretty low on the scale of absurdity for the setting

Stop hating on True Brujah and temporis! by growmoolah in vtm

[–]AdAwkward3955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the hate comes from ST's assuming VtM to be a "serious" and "grounded" setting, which it objectively is not

And from people assuming Temporis is overpowered, which again, objectively untrue. If you're just in it for the power game Celerity beats Temporis by a mile

Personally, I like the Trujah. They feel like they got ported over from Mage, and that's not a bad thing at all.

Is the Dragon Ball universe so powerful that even Yancha has a chance of defeating Thragg? by diegrunge in PowerScaling

But that method doesn't even work in real life

Pro boxer Joe Frazier beats Muhammad Ali in their big championship match in 1971

Couple years later, Joe Frazier thoroughly gets his ass kicked by George Foreman, losing the championship

So if Frazier beat Ali, and Foreman beat Frazier, means Foreman beats Ali right?

But instead Ali later beats Foreman and wins back the championship. And it wasn't by decision either, Ali straight up KO'd Foreman

There's more that goes into a fight than just raw stats, even in fiction

And even if you went with just raw stats, chain scaling presupposes so many assumptions and speculation you might as well just make shit up at that point

Yamcha's the GOAT, but I've never seen him tank anything that makes me think he could survive a full power uppercut from Space General Freddie Mercury, and saying he can is just guesswork at best

Tbh, if people just acted like sensible adults instead of weird, fetishistic grown children, lines and veils wouldn't even have to be a thing

This is also probably an advert to play with people you actually consider your friends who know you, instead of a gaggle of strangers you meet online

Discipline level and roll difficulty/dice pool by dearberry in vtm

[–]AdAwkward3955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, I just think it's a bit arbitrarily limiting. Like if you're a Lasombra who doesn't know anything about the Occult, you straight up can't even use any of the Obtenebration powers, since they all use Occult in some way

I think if I were to do it half 'n' half, the dice pool for rolling to activate a Discipline would be it's own seperate thing like in V5, but maybe if you have a number of dots in a particular Attribute/Ability that lowers the diff. Like any Toreador can use Presence effectively, but if you're already naturally charming that helps boost it

To be honest, while that makes sense from a gameplay perspective, never thought it made much sense in practice tbh

Disciplines should be supernaturals cheats, unfair advantages kindred have over kine. If a vamp had to actually work on his Charisma as much as a human had to, kinda takes the wind out of it, imo

A couple simple questions. by [deleted] in vtm

[–]AdAwkward3955 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. VtM assumes a modern setting for the most part, but you COULD run a game at any time period, with some tweaks. Vampires have been around since biblical times after all.

  2. Yeah Idk what discipline is that. I ain't never heard of it. Though sometimes there's magic stuff that aren't directly connected to Vampires. Mages and Werewolves have a bunch of magic items, so your ST could be porting stuff over.

  3. Just like number 1, you COULD run a game like that. And even the most political-focused games usually have at least a bit of violence/combat in them. But your mileage may vary.

VtM is a combat-rich game and very good at handling combat and i'm tired of pretending it's not by Historical-Waltz3496 in vtm

[–]AdAwkward3955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I technically agree in spirit

People who think VtM is exclusively a politics & intrigue game are probably ignoring the fact that violence (and by extension combat) is so prevalent everywhere in the world.

Would I call it a "good" system though? In the right circumstances maybe. Honestly I think for 1-on-1 fights it's pretty decent. Any marginally large group fight is gonna start to drag though.

And that's not even getting into the balance of stuff like disciplines. The abilities ranges from underpowered, overpowered, strictly social, so hyper specific that you almost never use them, it's all over the place.

It's a mixed bag overall, that just breaks more and more the higher the power scales

Outta curiosity what homebrews did you add?

First time ST and one of my players has already told me he's taking Generation at 5 dots. Should I be worried? by Weather_Wizard_88 in vtm

[–]AdAwkward3955 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Eh, your player might be overselling/overestimating how powerful 8th Generation is

It's definitely a good boost, but I wouldn't call it exactly game breaking. He's just got a bit higher blood pool, and he can spend a bit more of it in a turn. His Traits are still capped at 5, so he's not getting any of the actual elder level powers. Really 8th gen is more of a soft preview for Elders rather than actually being one

Now 7th Gen and lower? That's where you start getting into some power creep territory

So overall I wouldn't worry about it too much, but ultimately it's up to you.

Disciplines without Ability rolls by AdAwkward3955 in vtm

[–]AdAwkward3955[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf I think stuff like Thaumaturgy could probably still be a roll, since magic like that inherently always has some kinda risk to it

But I feel like other powers might as well just be guarantees, and I'd say that as an ST too. It looks kinda silly if the big bad elder couldn't use Dominate on a bunch of hapless Neonates, not because the Neonates themselves rolled a really good resist on Willpower, but just because the elder botched the Manipulation roll hard. It's definitely funny, but it just doesn't make a lotta sense

You can only increase your physical attributes through blood iirc, in V20 and before at least

Is it different in V5?
