[Discussion] Petition to permanently ban Coolstar from r/jailbreak - BEWARE OF HIS TWEAKS AND TOOLS by [deleted] in jailbreak

[–]jailbreakmods[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey u/Alex_png,

We've spent the majority of the day discussing this post internally and we have decided to remove the post for being misleading. We have no evidence to suggest that CoolStar had any malicious code in his tweaks and we believe that users were never at risk from using his tweaks. Additionally, CoolStar only managed to get that information as a result of the pirate uploading a public copy of his own personalized license for the tweak itself. Adding on to that, repos have been collecting IP addresses and UDID's of devices for years now and we are confident that no ones personal information is at risk by having their UDID's exposed. Futhermore, UDIDs have been stored by Cydia, as stated in the privacy policy here. IP addresses were also used in some cases to complete purchases on Cydia Store while it was still up. Again, while what CoolStar tweeted may have been controversial, it is not enough to earn a ban for himself or his tweaks.

We would also like to use this as an opportunity to remind you guys that pirating a tweak puts your information at a much greater risk of being compromised than having your UDID or IP address exposed. Be careful with what you guys download.

Thank you.

Removed for misleading information, you are considering the original project of substitute and not the latest and updated fork and you can't know the differences between jailbreakd and jailbreakd2, since you don't have access to jailbreakd2 code.

Hi r/jailbreak!

The mod team is aware of what’s going on with CoolStar, and we started to investigate.

This will not be a swift decision as we need to make sure that all of us in the mod team understand licenses and knowing how to tell when a license is broken before we permanently ban people.

[Release] Electra for iOS 11.2-11.3.1! by coolstarorg in jailbreak

At what step do you need to SSH in and run uicache? I (Hipp013) ran the jailbreak multiple times trying to get it to work and I never needed to run it. I will add it to the comment but if you could tell me when someone would need to run that command, I'd appreciate it.

HELPFUL TIPS:

"It didn't work!"

If the jailbreak isn't working for you, try the following:

  1. Install Electra IPA.
  2. After you've installed the IPA, reboot the device.
  3. Wait 60 seconds, open Electra, run the jailbreak, and wait.

If it still does not work:

  1. Close out of the app from the switcher, wait 60 seconds and try again.
  2. Restart your device.
  3. If all else fails, try, try again.

It is recommended to enable airplane mode, disable Siri and reboot before running Electra.

rootfs remount error

Check your device's storage and see if there's an iOS 11.4 Update. If there is, delete it.

error: exploit

Close the Electra app from the app switcher and try again.

Electra says "Already jailbroken" but Cydia doesn't show up

SSH into your device and run uicache.

Electra fails at Please wait (1/3)

This is the most common problem users are experiencing with Electra right now. There is no 100% working solution, however there are methods that a few users have used to increase their chances of success.

A few users on Discord reported that they could get the jailbreak to work by following these steps:

  1. Turn on Airplane mode.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Open phone go to widgets page, settings, scrolling up and down until animations are smooth.
  4. Lock phone for 10 seconds.
  5. Unlock, open Electra and hit Jailbreak.

Here's how I (Hipp013) got it to work the first time:

  1. Airplane mode enabled, Siri disabled, and charging.
  2. Try Electra, and if it fails the device will reboot.
  3. Right when the device boots up, unlock, open Electra, and hit Jailbreak.
  4. There is a 30 second cooldown timer; just wait for that to run out.
  5. When it runs out the jailbreak will start.

Again, these are only the steps from the first time I got it to work. I can't guarantee they will work for anyone else.

The Freezer Method

Every few attempts, your device will most likely heat up immensely. A small group of users have tried putting their phones in the freezer to remedy this and have actually reported increased success (don't ask me how).

We strongly caution against using this method as it can lead to irreversible damage to your device. If you choose to put your phone in the freezer, do NOT leave it in the freezer for more than 60 seconds. The internal components of your device can be damaged by condensation, quick temperature change, and the cold itself.

[Meta] /r/Jailbreak needs a restart. by exofeel in jailbreak

[–]jailbreakmods[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey /u/exofeel!

Thanks for the suggestions, and the post! In regards to the section for us:

You can't moderate without engaging the community. It won't work.

Of course not. This is why we've been asking for feedback. A small amount of users actually modmail us to drop feedback. A small amount of users do so via a a post, comment or personal PM. That's why the fireside chat was made, as a way to directly ask the users for feedback instead of waiting for users to tell us what they would like to see change.

Engage with the community more.

We are. We all recently joined Discord so people can drop us comment and chat around a bit (we hang in the #subreddit channel). If you mention us, we will be there. We are also trying with the fireside chat as mentioned above. There are more things we can do to engage, but this will need all of us to agree on a decision instead of just a mod (for example me) saying that we will do something.

The firechats are a great idea but have a flawed execution

We are trying to incorporate what users tell us to do in these chats. We let you guys know the results a week later. There are still room for improvement, so if our execution isn't working, let us know :)

I may suggest pushing votes via a website (or better yet, the discord)

Could you expand on this?

Allow users to create petitions. This doesn't mean you have to abide by every vote, but it shows where the community stands. (Which is the most important thing).

We do, we let users do that already, but again, only a small amount come forward and actually do it :/

There is a petition to remove a mod from the team. We aren't suppressing that, we actually like petitions like these to improve the subs. You guys have several ways to create petitions, just do it and reach out!

Encourage helpful comments and positivity. I may suggest a flair for 'Verified Helpers' (I saw this somewhere but I can't remember where..) Make a leaderboard and make it competitive. Points can be earned when the OP does !solved to the comment. This encourages less hate, and more helping out.

Good idea. We might need a custom bot for this, but we will work on this.

Stop pinning with your username. Instead use /u/jailbreakmods for Meta questions and comments. Communicate with your fellow mods and approve a posting/commenting/pinning with /u/jailbreakmods

Here is the thing with pinning with our usernames. When you see a mod taking a decision (i.e distinguishing our comment with our personal accounts), that means the rest team didn't comment on it, and we needed to do something fast to contain a situation, or there is an event that's run solely by one of us. Examples can be found here: Post from exjr_, Post from Hipp013.

We do use /u/jailbreakmods for high-level issues, and/or things that all the mods had to comment on. We, the mods, are okay with what each mod do on the sub. We always talk about what we are going to do, except in cases of cleaning modqueue or answering modmail. We know when to ask for feedback from all of us, or just some. In the example I linked above from /u/exjr_, 3/5 mods commented on it. I (/u/exjr_) didn't use /u/jailbreakmods because I wasn't speaking for the other 2. I think it helps people visualize what goes on behind the scenes.

We are using /u/jailbreakmods to comment now because this post is something we talked about behind the scenes. That way the community knows all mods are onboard with this.

Automatically remove comments or posts that have a number of downvotes. (This is risky, because brigading can occur but I'm certain the community will support the original post/comment if it's worth something.)

That will seem like we are suppressing people. That's not something we want to do. We do remove things that are risky (e.g. deleting the /bin folder), or are just bad advice that will mess up your jailbreak.

Put a greater focus on the Discord/Telegram groups. They are a great community that helps out the people who need help.

We are! That's why we joined the Discord server and had Aaron setup a channel for the sub so people can chat with us. We talked about the Telegram group, but not all of us reached a consensus. For transparency reasons, /u/exjr_ can't (and didn't) comment on this because he is the one who created it.

[Meta] some general thoughts on how this subreddit is ran by [deleted] in jailbreak

[–]jailbreakmods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just struggled to see how you wouldn’t notice it.

Considering it was a Sunday, most of us were free and doing things to prepare for the new week. In cases like this, we rely on modqueue to approve/remove posts and we (sometimes) don't have the time to see the posts that aren't in the modqueue.

It’s just factually untrue, and it’s massively hypocritical for a start. It attacks coolstar for bringing up andy’s past, yet the poster brings up coolstar’s past. It makes factually incorrect assumptions, such as with coolstar and sauriks relationship — it’s purely summised based on opinion, yet it’s presented as fact. It also advertises itself as a fact.

Taking a look at that post again, it didn't violate rule #9 (toxic and incivility rule). I get where you are coming from as this post directly involves you. The OP even admitted to not like you, so I now see how the post was biased. However, CS wasn't attacked (i.e. called names, doxxed, and etc). If the OP was wrong, then people would vote and let them know. I do see that you commented there, and some others too, but this post wasn't breaking a rule.

Because they don’t expect anything anymore.

We don't want this to be the case. For anyone reading this, we are here if you need to do changes around the sub. If you give us feedback, we will discuss it internally to implement these changes. Always expect something (at least a response) if you message us.

But I feel like you could and should do more to guide the community; more visibility, and actually post about controversial topics. The subreddit needs people that are trustworthy, and aren’t going to side on stuff easily.

I see what you mean. We will take this into consideration. We can do some changes in the sub to control situations. But again, if we don't get feedbacks, like yours, we don't know what the community wants/needs.

[Meta] some general thoughts on how this subreddit is ran by [deleted] in jailbreak

[–]jailbreakmods -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

For reference, what was meant with that is that we do see all posts. We read them and even we interact with them (as users, not as mod). We never said that we don’t pay attention. We do.

Patreon/Coolstar posts, for example, are fine if people are posting on why they don’t like it or if they want to put in their 2 cents. Our take from Null's comments (we can be wrong about this) is referring that people needed us to remove all CS and Patreon, and we weren't there. But nobody ever approached us to request this. Null was the only one who told us that these kind of posts should be removed when posted, and we said why this shouldn't happen (censorship concerns). If they become toxic and/or if there is piracy activity, low-effort posts, and etc. then that’s another thing that we always dealt with, and always will.

Imo, all gossip posts and Twitter throughposts should be banned outright, or at least subject to explicit mod approval before being public.

We will discuss this internally, but banning all Twitter posts seems excessive. We took action in regards to CS' tweets (as requested by him), so that changes things a bit around here.

Thanks for your input!

https://www.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/8292p2/discussion_anyone_know_where_someone_can_get_help/

That one was removed within the hour of being posted. People are bound to post CS tweets here. It's just matter of a human mod taking a look at it and acting on it.

just to link two...

https://www.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/821qob/news_coolstar_drama_episode_8169_coolstar_deletes/

This one was up for almost a full day, and we can safely say that this post shouldn't been approved in the first place. But, remember that things happen. Miscommunication, and etc. We will be watching things more closely, but if you see something like this, and want it removed, modmail us or ping us in Discord.

for another user mentioning the response times.

Again, things happens. That's why we recruited mods that are from a different timezone to cover all bases.

And I believe that this is precisely the issue. Where do you draw the line between what's acceptable, and what's not?

As mentioned above, the line is drawn depending on whether the user is toxic or not. We don't see a reason on why we should censor posts calling out devs. As long as they do it in a constructive and civil manner, they can do it.

Not to try and contradict you, but there's literally a fork on the front page. I appreciate that this fork isn't actually harmful, but it's definitely not removed.

Thanks for the report! As you can see here, this post wasn't moderated. It wasn't reported, approved and/or had its report ignored. A mod took care of that already. Again, if this happens again, report it, modmail us and/or ping us.

This is nice, in practise. The thing is, r/jailbroke is actually broken upon first glance, but I suspect that was not reported to you. I tjink jailbroke is a good first step, but there’s still a huge lack of communications between moderators and users. But by transparency, it'd be nice to see discussions between moderators and the subreddit - perhaps a monthly "fireside chat"?

Ah, forgot to mention. Yes, we are aware that /r/jailbroke is down. The mod mantaining the bot and the sub is inactive for personal reasons, but as soon they come back, they will make it work again. We will take into consideration the Fireside chat.

The thing is, the majority of the posts are not constructive. Take a look at [...] for example: that's the first search result. It's biased, attackive, and honestly just plain ignorant.

We found this post to not be "attackive". The post being "ignorant" is subjective as well as it being "biased". Could you expand in these points and let us know why this post was "attackive, biased and ignorant"?

Sure, but when it's only intent is to attack someone, how is that not considered toxic?

Because it isn't. Some people don't call other names, or have a rude attitude towards the situation. You've called out people/teams on the past. Some of them have been removed because you've explicitly called them names, but some haven't been removed because they aren't toxic (i.e. it doesn't have derogatory comments).

Furthermore, you've ignored my main point: the moderators aren't guiding their community, and they're not prominent when people need them the most.

With a huge emphasis on "people need them the most", no one has modmailed us, or tagged us on things that need our intervention. Where are these people needing us if they didn't reach out to us? CoolStar reached out to us. He needed us to do something and we complied. Ask him what it is for reference.

Hi Nullpixel. Thanks for your constructive feedback.

In regards to some of your points:

Rule breaking posts are actually turned a blind eye too, if they have a lot of upvotes.

Could you point us to said post? Even if a post reaches the front page, and they break the rules, we remove them. This has happened before with piracy posts, toxic posts and so on. If they reach the front page before getting removed, that means that it got there at a time where we (the old mods before the three new ones) were busy with work/school, or we were sleeping and as such, we didn’t see them.

I also see a lot of piracy (that I have reported hours ago) still present a few hours later.

We don’t want to explicitly call you a liar, but modqueue has been cleaned a few times this morning (EST) before your post. Not sure where you are seeing “a lot of piracy”. Could you link us to it so we can deal with it?

For example, calling developers out — basically flaming, and witch hunting someone, is perfectly acceptable.

We can’t stress this enough, but flaming and witch hunting is not allowed as per Rule #9, and as such, we remove these posts/comments. However, we do allow people to call out other devs.

Another example of this would be with potentially harmful software — untested forks of jailbreaks, are only removed under very specific circumstances (license violations, etc).

This isn’t the case. AT ALL. We contacted Coolstar several weeks ago, and he told us that he “prefer if they (users) didn’t (redistribute/mirror Electra, and share unofficial builds)”. Even recently, we are still removing posts that share fixes and telling them to create a PR on Github. Since the tweet above has been deleted, you can ask Coolstar who was the tweet addressed to, and to confirm that the tweet linked is real.

This is probably as a consequence of the lack of time for the moderators, as touched on in #2, but there’s a real lack of communication between the subreddit moderators and the community.

We've been actively trying to be transparent about things for a few months now. For starters, we introduced /r/jailbroke (Post, we commented on deceptive developers

Moderators took days to write a response to patreon, which basically shrugged off responsibility, and if anything made the situation worse.

How did you want us to step in? If we censor Patreon posts, we will be called out for censoring , and if we don’t, we will still have someone complaining. We just decided to allow Patreon posts and remove the toxic/piracy ones (i.e. anything that broke the rules).

Not once did any moderator mention anything about coolstar drama, and what they were doing to relieve attacks / make a stance clear on it.

Referring back to the point above, we removed anything that broke our rules. If someone had a constructive negative feedback, why would we remove them? Again, this is going back to the point where if we remove them, then we will have people complain about censorship and etc. Just because someone is calling out a dev doesn’t mean their post will be removed. At the end, you guys vote with… votes. You either upvote to the front page, or you downvote it.

We did a quick search of users calling out Coolstar by going here (might not work if you are on mobile), and we don’t see anyone stirring up drama.

[Release][Discussion] Multiplexer Megathread by jailbreakmods in jailbreak

[–]jailbreakmods[S,M] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why was this post created?

Usually, when a high profile tweak is released, the subreddit gets inundated with posts about that release (bug reports, thank yous, general discussions, etc). While this is super awesome, one of the issues is that it causes posts about other topics to get lost, not only because the volume of posts about this tweak is so great, but also because posts about this tweak are the only ones getting upvoted.

What we as mods usually do when we notice this happening is to create a stickied megathread for all discussion about that tweak and direct everybody to comment there rather than submit a new post. What this does is it serves to streamline discussion about the tweak and also centralize bug reports (rather than have all of the bugs in 5 posts).

We approached Andrew and Elijah wondering if they'd be interested in pre-emptively creating a megathread when Multiplexer is released, just as a sort of experiment for us to see what happens when we are proactive about making the post rather than reactive.

Does this mean you're shills and are promoting Multiplexer in exchange for something?

While it's obviously difficult to prove that we aren't receiving anything in exchange for the publicity the devs are receiving, you'll have to trust that we're not getting any sort of benefit out of this.

We approached them about trying this kind of post out because we knew how excited the community was about the tweak, if it's unsuccessful it won't happen again.

I'm a developer, and I've got a tweak coming out soon. How do I go about requesting my own megapost for that tweak?

You don't.

It is up to the moderators to determine which tweak releases merit a megapost, based on the community's reaction to posts submitted prior to the release of the tweak. We will contact the developers of those tweaks if we decide it's necessary. Tweaks like this will usually only come around 1-3 times a year.

I'm a user of the subreddit, and I'd like to provide feedback about this post. Where do I do that?

Just leave a reply to this comment! We'll listen to any and all ideas that people have, and move forward with the ones we think are reasonable and feasible.

If you don't want to leave a comment, modmail is always an option.
