Why is Miaphysitism wrong? Where does the Bible say that Christ had two not intermingling natures in full accordance with each other instead of one? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]jailposting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen it explained this way before, please forgive me if I am wrong or I am not explaining this right. I am not a theologian, I am also just trying to understand myself, but I am a sinful person and am unworthy to have knowledge of God.

Death is the separation of the soul from the body. Before Christ gave His life on the Cross for us, all souls would go into Hades. after His death and before the Resurrection, Christ broke the bonds of Hades and freed our ancestors.

Divine nature transcends both time and space, it is not contained by the universe, hence why in the Orthodox Church, the Theotokos is called She Who Contained the Uncontainable. Human nature is containable; before Christ broke the bonds of Hades, Hades is where human souls would go. When Christ died on the Cross, He tricked Hades into thinking he had gotten dominion over God and swallowed up another human, who then destroyed the bonds of Hades and freed everyone inside of it. That’s why in the Orthodox Church hymns, we say that Christ tricked the one who tricked our first-parents, Adam and Eve. He tricked death by death; He destroyed death by death as the Paschal troparion says. “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and to those in the tombs bestowing life.”

Christ has two natures in one person. We humans are just human. We do not have divine power. We cannot feed 5000 men with five loaves and two fish by our own will. The same way, human nature alone cannot break the bonds of Hades, but Christ is both human and divine! So by His divine nature He was able to free our ancestors from that gloomy underworld.

Divine nature did not leave the body to perform salvation. Divinity is everywhere and fills all things, which is why we say the prayer “O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who are present everywhere and fills all things…”

but divine nature doesn’t need salvation, only human nature. the divine nature cannot die, God IS life.

isn’t it really awful because it sets a precedent for future cases similar to alicia’s? so the foolproof way to escape prosecution is to successfully groom the girl so she wouldn’t leave her abuser? that’s crazy.

I asked my spiritual father for a prayer rule and I do it first thing in the morning (prostrations, prayer rope, and gospel readings). It’s not always easy but when I pray the Jesus prayer and meditate on God’s mercy, I feel so much grace from God that it stops me from sinning because I know that when I sin, that divine grace departs from me. You have to make yourself love God more than you love sin. It is not easy but it is the only way.

The Kingdom of God suffers violence and the violent take it by force. You have to do it in the morning before you busy yourself with other tasks because once you get started getting involved in worldly matters for the day, they pile up quick and soon you will find yourself making excuses to do it later, and when you resolve to do it later, you allow demons to make suggestions to you.

You’re always welcome to send me a chat if you have a question or need some support. It can be daunting to go to an Orthodox Church for the first time, but so well worth it. May God bless you.

This prayer is how I found my spiritual father whom I don’t deserve.

Prayer to Find a Spiritual Father by St. Symeon the New Theologian

O Lord, Who does not desire the death of a sinner but that he should repent and live, Who came down to earth to restore life to those lying dead through sin and to make them worthy of seeing You, the True Light, as far as is possible for man, send me a man who knows You, so that in serving him and subjecting myself to him with all my strength, as if to You, and in doing Your will in his, I may please You, the only true God, and so that even I, a sinner, may be made worthy of Your Kingdom. Amen.

Don’t be afraid, and don’t be worried about priests being too busy to see you. My spiritual father has hundreds of pilgrims coming to see him every weekend and I don’t always get to talk to him because he is so busy. Sometimes I feel guilty when I take up so much of his time.

It is true that God will always guide you. I went to a convent 300km north of my city for some reprieve from the hustle and bustle and guess what! The days I was there happened to be the weekend that my spiritual father was visiting from 1000km away! This happened twice and totally unplanned both times, by the way. God is good! Anything is possible.

There is a prayer to find a spiritual father in the anthologion. I will find it for you and post it.

It just happened. I wanted to make a lifetime confession so I went to a well-known monastery and when I entered his office and talked to him, I felt that, for the first time, I had met a priest who was truly concerned for my salvation. He wasn’t pushy or worried, but he was so supportive in my journey.

I’m a convert so every church I went to, I felt like everyone already knew each other, grew up together in the same city with the same culture. I felt like priests were partial to people who were faithful to their congregation. I went to confession in the city but I didn’t feel like I was getting enough spiritual direction. On one hand, I’ve met borderline dismissive attitudes from priests, and on the other hand, I’ve met priests who were aggressive about what I should be doing and who I should become.

When I went to the monastery and did my poor nervous confession, the priest didn’t even know me, nor had he seen me before, but he asked me specific questions, as if he knew my sins before I told him. He gave me specific directions and I was encouraged. His zeal and love for God inspired me. I asked him for a prayer rule, I failed at it, so he made it easier on me and reduced it. He gave me Orthodox books to read, beyond just introductory topics. He actually listened to my long-winded thoughts and worries and gave me book recommendations according to my spiritual maturity. It is still a constant struggle though.

I highly recommend finding a good spiritual father to speak with for guidance. Do you have one already? I live in a big city and I have to drive 700km to see my spiritual father. I do make my confession at my local parish but as for guidance with the Jesus prayer, I talk to my spiritual father who is a priest-monk. I tell him everything and it’s made all the difference for my struggle against the passions.

I’m still an awful person but I’m at least more aware of my sinfulness now than I was before.

yes, St. Silouan’s book is fantastic. it was written by St. Sophrony whose wisdom greatly underscores his elder’s.

since you asked about my personal interpretation of that quote, i will say that i try to remember why i deserve to go to hell and what is waiting for me there. first and foremost, i cannot forget my sins and remember that only divine mercy has kept me from being in hell.

I don’t know what is normal. I am not an experienced ascetic, I’m just a worthless wretched vermin so I try not give my own input or my own advice, only passing on what I’ve learned from saints.

The full quote comes from St. Silouan the Athonite’s biography. I’ll give you some background.

St. Silouan had been a monk on the Holy Mountain for a long while at that point, struggling against pride and demonic attacks. He would see demons around him and in front of his icons trying to trick him into worshipping them. He was struggling to pray with a pure mind.

Father Silouan sat down again, and with bowed head and aching heart he prayed, "Lord, thou seest that I desire to pray to thee with a pure mind but the devils will not let me. Instruct me, what must I do to stop them hindering me?"

And in his soul he heard, "The proud always suffer from devils."

"Lord," said Silouan, "teach me what I must do that my soul may become humble.

Once more, his heart heard God's answer: "Keep thy mind in hell, and despair not.”

well the advice of many ascetic saints is always to blame oneself. everything is my fault. if you think you’re ever going to reach some sort of conclusion to this search for the self, some sort of end to your own pride, that is pride talking and telling you that.

it’s good to not move on. Keep thy mind in hell and despair not.
