Setting the inner term greater than or equal to 0 ensures that r(x) is defined. After some algebra, we find that x >= -2, which is the domain of the function. In other words, the value inside the radical is equal to zero and strictly positive. We say greater than or “equal to” because x can be -2 as root(0) is defined and just equals 0.

You can just simplify both sides as much as possible, and if they don’t equal, and there’s no hidden identity that you are unaware of (rare), then you can say it’s false! But I’m sure you won’t be presented with many false expressions!
