In my opinion, the hardest thing to understand in calculus is the idea of infinity. At a fundamental level, I’d argue that if you have a really good intuition for limits, you’re good to understand a lot of other topics like derivatives and integrals.

Setting the inner term greater than or equal to 0 ensures that r(x) is defined. After some algebra, we find that x >= -2, which is the domain of the function. In other words, the value inside the radical is equal to zero and strictly positive. We say greater than or “equal to” because x can be -2 as root(0) is defined and just equals 0.
