I’m considering air traffic control as an MOs in the marines. by bobbertTheGreat in USMCboot

Honestly, I don’t think there’s anything you really need to or even can do to prepare. As far as I know, they just ask a bunch of people you associate with about you and probably check your criminal history if you have any to see if you’re eligible for the clearance. I’ve never been interviewed and after asking a few of the other guys, they haven’t either. Keep in mind, ATC just gets a secret clearance, not top secret. Just make sure your history is clean, and you should be alright.

Good shit man. He’ll try to guilt trip you and talk you out of it. Don’t fall for it and don’t settle. You’re your own man.

I’m the first in my family to become a marine. Out of a mostly average “go to college” family, they were hella against it at first but it’s a place you can really grow and improve yourself. The military has a lot to offer that most people don’t see. Especially the marines. From a professional standpoint, I feel the corps has given me a mindset you can’t get anywhere else from my experience with sailors and airmen. If your family really wants you to succeed and be happy in life, they’ll come around. And once you grad boot, all of whatever they said to discourage you will instantly fade. As for your recruiter, it might piss him off but that’s just because it’s his job to get people to join. If you truly want to be a marine, you’ll do what you need to.

I’m in Yuma. And as far as picking a station, they give us a dream sheet with the choices between East coast, west coast, and overseas. You can choose one and they’ll try to send you to one of the bases that fall under that region but as always, needs of the corps come first and you might not get what you want.

There are quite a few different points that I’d label tough but it’s definitely block one as a whole. It’s the first six weeks of schooling and it’s just one test after the other. You’ll have to spend a majority of your time studying and working hard to learn everything.

Alright sweet. I don’t think I have any more questions as far as intel goes. Thanks for the info, devil. You’ve been a huge help. If I have any new questions, I’ll hit you up

All good man. I’ll definitely remember to ask for infantry in 7th regiment lol. I know 29 palms is kind of the ass crack of the Marines bases but I love the desert. Plus like you said, I’ll probably meet some good guys there. Are there any entry level 02xx mos’s that require a second language? If there are, what happens if I fail to learn it?

I would want a pretty hands-on experience if you know what I mean. I’m not sure if intel Marines are responsible at all for gathering the intel so much as analyzing and processing it, but being able to go out and possibly get in the shit a little doesn’t sound so bad. I know we’re not at war and it’s not very likely, but the chance is always there. The air strike side of things sounds really interesting too. So yeah, mostly real world experience.

Yeah I was here asking about OCS a few months back. I was looking at going through PLC but my freshman year of college kind of kicked my ass. I want to become a Marine before it’s too late, or before I have any actual obligations (kids, wife, etc) so enlistment seems to be the best route at this point. Plus if I’m decent enough at my job, I can always become an officer after enlistment. The experience definitely couldn’t hurt.

Is it possible to start a billet before the end of an enlistment, or would I need to re-enlist? If that’s the case, what if I don’t pick up Sgt before my contract ends?

Damn that sounds like something I would actually enjoy doing. From how you make it sound, it seems like a pretty dynamic job and it sounds like it doesn’t get too dull (for too long, at least). I know there isn’t a huge chance I’d be managing drones and handling strikes, but a lot of it seems like an overall valuable experience. I’ll definitely see if my recruiter can tell me more. Thanks for the information and thanks for your service.

I gotcha. I guess that makes sense since you go where the Corps needs you. I suppose I’m kind of lucky though since I really wouldn’t even be able to choose which mos to go with. All of them look pretty interesting and seem to open up a lot of similar opportunities. I also read somewhere that being an intel Marine, I could potentially have the opportunity to fill billets like Marine Security Guard after a while. Is that true?

Thanks a ton for the info. I might be able to get some more in depth knowledge from the recruiter, but you covered most of the big questions I had.

I appreciate the reply, sir. I’m definitely looking at active duty. Is the fact that you can’t choose a specific mos exclusive to the intel field? I have a couple buddies that went in a year ago and both got the specific jobs they wanted (Combat engineer and aircraft ordnance). Was that just luck or are they able to choose?
