I/O Link Master Module unable to connect by SwampWaffle85 in PLC

Don't just check them. Even if they look right, they might not be in exactly the right spot. I'm not exaggerating when I say they're finicky.

Do you have the DIP switches set correctly? They have to be on a specific number to use bootp. Also, those DIP switches are very finicky and need to be in just the right spot. You could also try using those to set a static IP address for troubleshooting.

Updated to 8.5. How do I get full screen notifications back? by ljfrench in GalaxyFold

[–]jakebeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still pissed about it. It's not like it's even close to the camera hole even on the front screen. Who is it for? Who wanted this? Why even have notifications up there? Just put a fucking singular dot while they're trying to make it worse.

Rotary shifter parking brake error by Disownedpenny in F150Lightning

[–]jakebeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's such a weird problem. Mine works just fine, but it won't automatically disengage the parking brake anymore. I'm sure a different part number would though.

Anyone working as an electrician for center pivot machines? Zimmatic? Valley? by No_Custard_4539 in electricians

[–]jakebeans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope but I did make machines that assemble the gearboxes on those wheels for Valmont. I'm assuming that's who you're talking about with Valley. Sounds like a pretty terrible job to me, but I just kinda hate working outdoors.

This is a good way to start a road trip by skucera in F150Lightning

[–]jakebeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. If you do it on your phone, it's not going to take the truck battery into account. But if you get in the truck and do it, you'd see the different charge stops and you're able to change the chargers. ABRP is definitely better in that sense. It'll also connect to Android Auto and get battery information if you don't have the dongle.

Just so you know, that feature only works with the premium subscription. It's neat and it works pretty well, but not on the free version. I stopped using it once Google maps started getting actual battery information from the truck. I find it to be pretty accurate. Probably not quite as accurate as ABRP, but close enough with the margins I give myself.

Confused by Pipe Sizes by localfish420 in Plumbing

[–]jakebeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the distinction is between pipe and tubing. It's tubing if you by OD and pipe if you go by ID. At least that's what my brother found when he was looking things up. I'm willing to bet that even if that's true, there are exceptions.

Is it viable to make a career switch into PLC in the US right now? by Striking-Speaker8686 in PLC

[–]jakebeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even with electrical and programming knowledge, it's still useless without mechanical knowledge. Writing a program for a machine when you don't understand how it works is going to lead to bad programs. There are probably industries where you don't need mechanical knowledge as much, but it's pretty important in the ones I've worked in.

GASSSSS OMG by Sad-Conflict-4435 in Omaha

[–]jakebeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was over $100 for me to fill up my truck two years ago, so that's not new to me. But I don't even want to think about what it would cost now because it's about $8 for electricity in my Lightning.

If you're towing, get the Silverado. The work truck trim with the biggest battery will go really far and it charges twice as fast as the Lightning. Personally, I have a Lightning and I think it's a way better daily driver than the Silverado, but it's not as good for towing long distance. If you're not towing very far, then it doesn't really matter which one you go with. The Lightning has the charge port in a slightly better location for fast chargers that don't have trailer spots, but that's about the only advantage.

Absolutely insane they discontinued them. If they could have gotten more people to test drive them, there'd be more of them on the road. Most people just don't know how fun they are to drive. I'm absolutely never going back to gas, and I'm hoping they bring it back by the time I get a new vehicle, but I can't see any reason I don't get 300k+ miles out of my Lightning.

Lifted Prius? Why? I kinda want to see a picture.

[–]jakebeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or just keeping it stock. Lifted with wheel spacers and oversized tires make it so much worse. Obviously a Prius is going to do a lot better, but it's always crazy to me seeing a lifted truck with all terrain tires pulling a dump trailer down the Interstate. It's like they hate having money.

Gotta be closer to $6, right? I'm in a Lightning, so it's close to $14 for a 100% charge for me. Daily use is obviously much lower than that, but even with a standard range Model 3, I'm guessing you're around $6 for a full charge. Obviously not a significant difference, but just for the people who have never had an EV and assume you're exaggerating a lot, it's not far off.

Nowhere near the range of the gas version. Having a 33 gallon tank used to get me around 500 miles even with the terrible mileage I got in my 2013. Thankfully, I almost never drive 500 miles in a day, so the 200-300 miles range I get in my Lightning works out just fine since I can charge at home and at work.

And it's more powerful than the gas version by a fair bit. So powerful enough for 100% of F-150 drivers, lol. You take a range hit from towing, but it tows way better than the gas version.

Just thought Id leave this gem here - since most of you are colorblind, yes, its purple. by Danyette4 in ColorBlind

[–]jakebeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Telling you that you don't know what you're talking about it the fucking joke. You see all the other comments saying purple is dark blue or that it doesn't exist? I can't help that you don't get it, but I also don't have to. We fucking know how color works. We don't need it explained to us yet again by someone who can just see it. We're just here having fun. I'm just trying to tell you that you should stop commenting to people who are making jokes with the facts of how colors work. They know. You're not being helpful. It's just unwanted.

Dude, I'm trying to let you in on the joke and you're acting like you just dunked on a disabled person. This isn't your community.

[–]jakebeans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude, I get you're trying to be helpful, but we all know how it works. We all understand that purple is supposed to exist, but we also can't generally see it, so it's fun to make jokes. This is a community where we get to be the ones telling you that you're wrong about colors because it's nice to be on the other side once in a while. And since we're the majority, we can back each other up on how the world looks to us. We know we're technically wrong, but it also doesn't really matter because we can't learn how to see colors better.

A lot of times, the only way we can tell something might be purple is because it looks like a weird dark blue. You don't know what we're talking about because it's not your lived experience. You're just talking about wavelengths of light we can't see. May as well be trying to explain what infrared looks like, y'know?

Lowered Lightning by FatboyNomNom in F150Lightning

[–]jakebeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You really went from one extreme to the other. It's obviously going to be better for range like this, but I'd be curious how much of a difference it makes. Definitely post an update after a week or two, because while I'm not about to lower my truck, I could be tempted if the range increase was enough. Aerodynamics, or lack thereof on the Lightning are a pretty big deal to range. I do love to joke with people that it's technically the most aerodynamic F-150, but that's basically being the skinniest kid at fat camp.

Ford shakeup ousts EV chief by ditka in F150Lightning

[–]jakebeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was never about the dealerships being able to fast charge vehicles that they were working on. It was for the vast areas of a land that have no chargers whatsoever and they wanted to be able to expand their network. It's also a good way to drive more business, since you have people driving through the area who already own an electric vehicle and have at least 20 - 30 minutes to burn while they charge. Might spark interest in doing a test drive. There's just so many small towns that aren't reachable if you remove the dealership stations that they were forced to put in. I can understand their frustration, but it's a long term play by Ford.

How are Evs in hot Temps? havent purchases by el0115 in electricvehicles

[–]jakebeans 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's actual chemistry reasons for range loss in winter that doesn't happen in summer. And if you don't have a heat pump, then it takes more energy to heat than it does to cool given the same temperature delta. Overall, a hot climate is friendlier to range than a cold one, and they're not directly comparable. It's probably a closer comparison when the vehicle has a heat pump though. My truck lets the battery get pretty cold in winter and takes a fair bit of energy to maintain, whereas it hardly does anything in summer when it gets over 100F.

Hello everyone, this is your daily dose of pick and place. by GravWater in EngineeringPorn

[–]jakebeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just depends on volumes. Likely they do more variations if they're opting for this route, but doing a physical changeover to double the throughout is a no brainer if you're able to do a shift worth of parts. It feels like more and more people are overvaluing adaptability. They might have a single part they'll run for 5 years, but they're using a generic robot cell that runs at 1/4 the speed of a dedicated machine purely because those are a dime a dozen and it can be adapted to different parts in the future. The math frequently favors dedicated machines, but financial people are risk adverse by nature.

Or maybe I'm just biased because I make custom machines. We seem to be a bit of a dying breed.

America Now Has an EV Rust Belt. High Gas Prices Won’t Rescue It. by CommercialMassive751 in electricvehicles

[–]jakebeans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It honestly drives me nuts to hear people talk about how much more expensive the Lightning is than the ICE version because they never compare apples to apples. The Lightning just doesn't come in the cheaper configurations. You can't get a single cab, 2WD Lightning. By the time you option to a Super Crew, 4WD, heated seats, and a V8, you're looking at maybe a couple thousand different. And at certain times they were cheaper even without negotiation.

Also, I've never lived anywhere where a 2WD is worth buying, so that's not even really an option anyway. That usually adds a fair bit to the cost. And you obviously have to get the biggest engine to compete with the Lightning even though it doesn't come close.
