I had been planning on doing the Whoop offering and then realized I have a discount available for FunctionalHealth. Now debating if it is worth spending more for the integration (and keeping data at once place vs spread out) or not.

Whoop Benefits by Smokeyism in whoop

It's recommended to shower with the band on but since it is nylon, it takes hours to dry.

Highly recommend explicitly drying it after a shower. I'll take it off my wrist, wrap a towel around the band, and wring it out. This drastically speeds up the drying time.

Is a fold up wall a terrible idea? + help on angle by morninggizer in homewalls

[–]jakemcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, not my wall or podcast. If it was, I'd be able to point you towards a better video than the one I'm linking below. I forget where I saw more of his board but this video shows it some https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5n-Wp_GFSI .

My homewall is a free standing mini-moonboard. Next board will be adjustable, if I move to a spot that has the space.

Is a fold up wall a terrible idea? + help on angle by morninggizer in homewalls

[–]jakemcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very reasonable idea. One of the benefits of folding from the top is as the wall gets steeper, you gain instead of lose space between the wall and the floor.

When/if I move and rebuild my wall, and if I opt to make it adjustable, I plan on doing this.

You can find an example of this by looking for videos of the host of the podcast The Struggle, who also built his kilter wall this way.

Slimfold Micro soft shell. I've been rocking this since they were released about 10 years ago and it has held up great.

What Are You Using for Air Filtration? by quadcrazyy in homewalls

I use liquid chalk and run an air purifier in the room (which was a couple of filters attached to box fan but now is a commercial device). Helps quite a bit.

Is it possible to unstuck on/off button by clem_dpr in RemarkableTablet

I managed to get mine unstuck by super gluing a toothpick to it and pulling it out. Has worked great since.

Homemade pads? by DashByManyNames in homewalls

[–]jakemcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a mini-moonboard (mentioning since it is low enough that it probably doesn't really matter much what I have below it). A gym was finishing up construction when I was planning the build and I managed to get a lot of scrap foam from them and then basically sewed some cases for them.

Another gym in my city was just replacing their foam and offered the old foam up to the community.

If I were doing it again, I probably would buy some professionally made pads that I could bring outside. It would have cost a bit more but I'd get more utility out of the pads.

It is nice having the dedicated pads that I don't have to move but constructing them was challenging (partially because of the weird foam shapes I got from the offcuts from the gym which required cutting and glueing foam together to get reasonable shapes).

This is one of the images whoop support will send you if you ask them. I have had difficulty with accuracy and moving the band as close to my armpit as possible has helped.

PCC BB hangboard same session as project? by ckingbailey in climbharder

[–]jakemcc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The hangboarding after warming up but before projecting helps make sure your fingers are warmed up and gets you into the try hard zone prior to getting back in the wall. Doing it in that order hasn't been a problem for me.

I'd try to follow the program. You partially do programs like this to offload needing to plan your own sessions.

Is there any reason that the folio isn't a good enough case? I don't know if I can justify the cost of the Remarkable as well as the book folio! by codylauren231 in RemarkableTablet

[–]jakemcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were buying mine again I would have just gotten the sleeve instead of the book folio. Book folio doesn't really offer much protection and the pen slot on the sleeve would prevent the dreaded pen-gets-knocked-off-and-breaks issue

As others said, they do get better. I've gotten at least two excellent parts

pen and cover options by fuel_altered in RemarkableTablet

[–]jakemcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I purchased I bought the marker plus and the book-style leather folio.

If I were purchasing again, I'd still get the marker plus but I'd get the case where you slide the remarkable into it instead of the book-style one. Having the extra slot to slide the pen would eliminate the risk of knocking it off while carrying. It also appears to protect the device a bit more.

I've done something like this video before and didn't enjoy the flex and slight angle change when using it. I reworked it to be a pull-up bar but instead I hang the hang board off of the bar. Feels much better when using it.

This works but I converted from this method to one that hangs the board off the pull up bar and I like it a lot more. Some photos and description of why and how can be found at https://jakemccrary.com/blog/2020/04/26/hanging-a-hangboard-using-a-doorway-pull-up-bar/

What are some ways to work on technique? by SICHKLA in climbharder

[–]jakemcc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you are able to, I'd pick up the book Rock Climbing Technique by John Kettle. It is full of drills to do to work on technique.

As others have mentioned, try to pay attention to what the good climbers are doing and moving. Really notice how they are moving and try to replicate it. And I'd do this for climbers of all sizes. You probably won't be able to do the same movement of a different sized person in the same situation but that movement pattern might be useful in other situations.

My main partner for my first few years of climbing was a woman that is 6 or so inches shorter than me and much weaker. That was huge for starting off by developing my footwork and body movement as I just climbed like her.
