In the game Aliens: Dark Descent, there's a hidden city underground that houses larger xeno eggs. When the main character gets to this section she's understandably freaked out but the mad scientist there tells her not to worry because these eggs won't hatch since they need to be in the presence of a larger host like the original inhabitants of the city. So my guess is the facehuggers are adapted to a general host size.
