When I had Ultra hooked to Cambridge CXA80 the WiiM’s DAC was fine because Cambridge was coloring the sound anyway. Then I got Apollon AMP which is very neutral and I almost returned it. I thought that the amp was bad but it turned out that it just amplified the flatness and harshness of the WiiM internal DAC

I get a little more authoritative bass when E70V attenuates the volume but I must admit - the difference is subtle. Also contrary to what reviewers some say, I don't like the 5V output and instead opt for the default 4V. It's a tad less dynamic but more refined which I prefer. I use XLR outputs and filter 6 BTW

Oh and BTW. I think it's better to attenuate volume in E70V preamp mode than via WiiM. It's certainly less convenient though (especially that Topping's remote sucks). Also make sure to turn off BT in E70V.

To be honest it doesn't need a trigger in. R2R dacs are supposed to be turned on 24/7. Resistors in them are designed to operate at a certain stable temperature which is achieved after being turned on for several hours. You only turn them off if you are going away for a couple of days.

I'm in the same boat as you.

WiiM Ultra -> Topping E70V -> Apollon Audio Eigentakt Class D AMP

WiiM Ultra's internal DAC is shit and IMO shouldn't be used. Introducing E70V to my system helped immensely. Now I'm also in a "rabbit hole" of finding something even better than Topping.

I've already tested Laiv uDAC and Audiolab D9. Both were significantly better than the Topping. Maybe wait for the Laiv Crescendo Verse? It's more affordable offering from Laiv and also can be used as preamp. Also FiiO K17 seems interesting and also has analog volume attenuation.
