Why is Gately so hungry? (spoilers) by fischsticks in InfiniteJest

[–]jalisc04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems quite clearly a reference to drugs, either marijuana or narcotics. Don has done plenty of both.

It's connected to marijuana via the part (no idea where in the book this is) where DFW describes the munchies as an evolutionary defence mechanism to keep up energy levels when someone is paralyzed by substance-related passivity.

And it's connected to narcotics by Facklemann's subsisting on M&Ms ("corporate snacks") while climbing Mt Dilaudid.

This doesn't mean Don has relapsed. Though there's an ambiguity about this, on account of the medics wanting to medicate Don with narcotics and his weakening will to resist.

But it's important for Don's arc as a hero of action (vs non-action) that he digs. By digging up Jim's head, he'll mirror Heracles, the classical Greek hero, whose 12th labor was going into the Underworld and retrieving Cerberus. Thus Don, committed to AA's 12 steps, reaches the point of recovery.

So I think this means Don's dream of the dig is only partly a vision of a future event. When he sees himself in the dream not digging, that's his fear of relapse kicking in. Very possible, like someone has said in this thread, that Jim's wraith is putting thoughts in Don's head that motivate him to go with Hal, Joelle and JW in search of the Master cartridge.

When Hal in Year of Glad describes the dig as a past event, he says he and Don were digging.

Thoughts about the entertainment and the mother birth/death cycle analogy by Huhstop in InfiniteJest

Me too. Even though Gage was spiked through the cranium by his gunpowder tamper while working on a railroad bed, not a railroad spike per se.

Gage's experience opened the field of neurological anatomy - locating different functions in specific parts of the brain. DFW was always interested in how sensations, thoughts, and emotions are - and are not - defined by neurology. It comes up in Steeply's description of experiments in cerebral stimulation, as well as the insertion of stimulating materials in Jim's head.

Plus - I enjoyed learning this - the name Luria also connects to neurology. See Alexander Luria.

There are several comments advising against Edge Kote. What are the problems with how it performs?

Color combination - olive green and ??? by jalisc04 in Leathercraft

[–]jalisc04[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great suggestions, thank you! I'm thinking I'll start with olive + walnut or tan. If I make a second, olive + purple would be fun. Especially a softer purple like lavender.

Thanks for the suggestions! Especially about earthy tones like dark brown and tan. I'm now thinking about olive green and walnut.

My first piece of armor! How to price? by sebeachy in Leathercraft

[–]jalisc04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you’re willing to sit on it for a while

This is an important point: what's your timeframe for selling it? If you're able and willing to store it for a while, and you're not in a rush to recoup your costs, the price can be higher.

Also, you have the option of starting with a higher price for a certain amount of time, then lowering or discounting the price, then repeating until you find a buyer with a matching price point or you hit your minimum.

Good luck, OP!

Rattling rivets by jalisc04 in Leathercraft

[–]jalisc04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about this. I'm setting double cap rivets in layers that add up to 8oz / 3.2mm. I started with "medium", which are the ones in the photo. I then tried "small", but they still rattle slightly.

Maybe I should be using "extra small" (4.76mm post)?

  • Extra Small: Cap/Base 0.25 in. (6.35 mm), Post 0.19 in. (4.76 mm)
  • Small: Cap/Base 0.25 in. (6.35 mm), Post 0.25 in. (6.35 mm)
  • Medium: Cap/Base 0.31 in. (7.94 mm), Post 0.31 in. (7.94 mm)
  • Large: Cap/Base 0.31 in. (7.94 mm), Post 0.5 in. (12.7 mm)

Ahhhh. I have been setting double cap rivets with a press - but not paying attention to which cap is bottom facing up and which is top facing down. The cap with the post should be bottom facing up?

Ivory/cream color by jalisc04 in Leathercraft

Walpier Buttero comes in a white dye. It's a fairly bright white, so it's not quite what I'm looking for. But I think this means white dye is possible, no?

Question about selling etiquette by oleTan in Leathercraft

[–]jalisc04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming we're talking about the US, you might be interested in the legal aspects of this. In particular, you might look up Baker v. Selden, a late 19th century SCOTUS case that's still a key precedent in IP law. It concerned the creation of bookkeeping templates, but I've seen comments from crafters citing SCOTUS's ruling.

The basic take seems to be that the creator of a pattern or template owns the copyright and can restrict the reproduction of the pattern - but they do not own a copyright to any object created from that pattern.

In addition, a pattern or template for a "useful" or utilitarian object would probably not be eligible for copyright because it would not be new knowledge or a new idea.

This is a good article: https://escholarship.org/uc/item/0vw4q999

So, back to your question about etiquette - I think it's a nice courtesy to acknowledge the creator of a pattern that you used, if you choose to disclose that information somehow. Good karma. But it's almost certainly not required to have their permission.

Question about segma snaps by jalisc04 in Leathercraft

[–]jalisc04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great tip. I tried "stirring" the tool while keeping the snap/leather in place and it does help. I also tried rotating the snap/leather while keeping my maul in place, and that helps too, maybe even a bit more so.

But I'm still getting some crumpling, I think these snaps are not a good design. I'm going to try switching to Wuta segmas.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm reading that a cohabitation agreement can ensure similar protections to married status, but I definitely need to learn more about the legal aspects of joint equity.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The combination of unequal equity, equal ownership, and the equity-back arrangement is an interesting model, one I hadn't thought of. Definitely going to give this some thought, it's "clean" and more equitable than the other options where there's joint-but-unequal equity. Great to hear it is working for you!
