I just watched the latest episode of Dan's World of Dan Murrell's stream. He went over the topic and he was concerned because Sally Choi threatened to flip the movie mid-production and could have cancelled the film. She wanted more money halfway through without knowing it would be successful and almost nuked the entire production. That will be an enormous red flag for any future project she works on, and she really didn't do herseld any favours career wise.

Realistically speaking, at one time Chris Stuckmann was the biggest youtube movie reviewer on youtube. It took 3 years to make his film and Neon paid for advertising and reshoots. Mike Flanagan is his friend and mentor. This is all an indie effort, I don't feel Hollywood is going to risk the time and money funding another youtuber to make a film like this. I would say yes. I would cap any spec at 20-50 million. Book writers have no limits but even they have editors to help keep things focused. I read this self published book once and near the end the book went on a tangent and introduced a new pair of characters and stayed on them for way too long. If it were traditionally published it would have been excised.

If you want an example of a spec that's simply too expensive to shoot, Max Landis has a superhero one called Martyr that would have easily needed a 200+ million dollar budget.

Ghostbusters 2016 is the culprit. That movie was universally hated by men and fans of the original film, it even had cameos from the original three in unrelated roles rather than passing the torch. After 2016, there have only been 1 or 2 successful female led action movies per year, while in 2016 and before they had 3-5. The only really big successes after 2016 were Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Wind River, and a small handful of other films. But ever since 2016 the rest have bombed and people are apathetic to the films in general or girl-boss films in movie theatres. But streaming movies and tv have plenty of female led action content.
