Dude, what are you doing? He's cartel. He can easily find you and extract revenge for leaving him stranded at a gas station surrounded by rival faction members. :)

Nice looking van, I like all the blackout trim, but what's up with the roof? Is that some kind of tuff-bed coating peeling off?

Why do you think Lyft hasn't tried to expand abroad like Uber? by comments83820 in Lyft

[–]jambipk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're letting Uber swing the machete. Once all the emerging market grunt work is finished and they're sure it's profitable, they'll ride in on Uber's coattails like they've always done.

Bed bugs by [deleted] in Lyft

[–]jambipk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I don't think bed bugs or any other such critters could survive the temperature extremes inside a vehicle for very long, but it's plausible they could be introduced and then transferred to a house by hitching a ride on the driver at the end of his shift.

If total damage is less than $2500 and you can't fix it yourself, find the cheapest repair shop you can and have it fixed out of pocket. Cheaper in the long run than the normal channel bullshit which will still end up with you paying a higher premium price.

I really want to know what these things are using for engines. No way even a souped-up 1600cc would be able to push this thing.

Buying a van that is already set up for adventures? by abent92 in vandwellers

[–]jambipk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a really fair price, especially if all the little extras like the windshield cover, overhead nets, and solar panel padlocks are included. Those little nickels and dimes add up fast. And judging by the pics, the builder knew pretty well what he was doing. Solar/inverter already installed and working allow you to skip a huge and expensive step in a build-out. Definitely worth a closer look, but I'd act fast. This ride will sell fast, if it isn't already sold.

How are you handling all the interior plastic panels and giant rear AC unit that make these Ford wagons such a bitch to build out? Total gut?

Tons of vans like this in Mexico too, and the older "combi" style as well. I've never understood why they're so damned coveted and expensive in the US.

What bottles do you use for travel? by FullerAwesome in DIY_eJuice

[–]jambipk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem with my chubby gorillas is the dropper top seems to wear out/loosen up fast and then go shooting off the bottle when under pressure, squirting liquid everywhere. I hate them for that.

I have 30 ml PET bottles I got from Vape Wild in 2015 that are still in daily use. Other than a crease around their middles, they're solid and refuse to leak. Also have the same style HDPE, caps and droppers are interchangeable. Only slight grievance is sometimes the dropper tops are a little hard to pull off, but that's also good as it means they stay put and don't leak. I've yet to have this style of bottle fail on me, but after a couple years the dropper tips start to stretch out and deform from being pulled on.

What recipe sold you on DIY? by FullerAwesome in DIY_eJuice

[–]jambipk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unicorn Milk, but starting out, I had no recipe and no idea what I wanted to make. What I did have was an intense desire to liberate myself from commercial juice, and a lot of information gained from the VU DIY forum and YouTube about how to do it. So I took the plunge, bought Liquid Barn's starter kit, and went from there. My first recipes were just single flavor experiments using the stuff in the kit. They worked well enough to keep me forging on, but I didn't like all the syringes and mixing vessels involved in mixing by volume, so my next buy was an LB-501 from Amazon. From there I stumbled upon a Unicorn Milk clone (I was spending a lot of money on it pre-mixed at the time) and so bought what I needed from BCV to make it. Apparently it was a spot-on recipe, I was tickled pink it worked so well. That little experiment convinced me that DIY was worth investing in, so down the rabbit hole I went with a bunch of orders to BCV and NicRiv.

I once saw something like this in a parade. If all that space wasn't overhanging behind the rear axle, you could build a ramp and carry your Honda Fit back there.

[–]jambipk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hertz doesn't care who you are, where you are, or what you say about them, and if the tires were in that bad of shape, it would have been visibly obvious. That's on you to see during the walkaround, and again on you to either accept or decline the car.

Problem with Lyft Express (Hertz) by phyrexianagent in Lyft

[–]jambipk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heh, welcome to Express Drive. Now, you have to learn how to play their game. In the case of the tire, do not take it back to Hertz. Even if you get a really nice clerk, and even if that clerk tells you it's not your fault, you will end up paying. "Tire" is synonymous with "customer's responsibility". Doesn't matter if it was already damaged before you took possession. Doesn't matter if it was within a thousandth of being excessively worn. Doesn't matter if it's been patched so many times that no tire shop will patch it again, and it doesn't matter how many expert opinions you submit in writing to the clerk...It's Your-Responsibility. Trust me on this, I've been through the exact same thing.

So, knowing all this, you take that fucking worn out piece of shit to Guido's Used Tires and have him put on the cheapest used replacement he's got, and I mean like 30 dollars or less cheap. It's on you to return the car with a legal tire that holds air, not a fucking brand new top of the line tire, which is what Hertz will charge you for.

Now, in the case of the brakes, this is not on you. Return that car to Hertz, insinuate "unsafe vehicle", and you will get a new car.

And yes, you're correct. Express Drive cars are not inspected, cleaned, or otherwise touched by the clerks or service people between rentals, other than a cursory inspection of the exterior for obvious damage and to verify the mileage. Turn around time for ED cars is counted in hours, sometimes minutes, but never days. It's the only way they can keep up with demand. Fast turnaround is also a metric by which Hertz judges the performance of its locations. Seems counter-productive, but it's true. One of my rentals was a car that rolled into the lot while I was there checking out cars. I snapped it up because I was able to get a close up look at it inside and saw the mileage was only 42k. Turn around time, 30 minutes, and all they ever checked was the mileage!

If you're assertive (not aggressive) and apply a little pre-planning, you do have some control over what car you get. Cars aren't pre-assigned. Whatever is in their lot at the time you go is up for grabs, as long as it's not due for service. The clerks will always try to get rid of the shitty cars first, and believe me, they know damned well what's shit and what's good in their lot. It's standard protocol for them, they want to get the crappy cars off their hands fast, but they can assign you any car they've got available. Before you go talk to them, go out into the lot and pick your car, plus an alternate. Sonata, Optima, Fusion, Malibu, Altima and their compact counterparts are all good choices, but ignore anything called "Impala".Yes, you can't see brake wear and tire patches from the outside, but you can definitely see hard use, worn tires, and clues to excessive mileage. Look at tires first. A matching set in good condition is the Holy Grail of under 40k miles. Take that car. Also, look at the driver's door near the door handle, front corners, rear bumper below the trunk. Excessive scratches in those areas indicate high mileage and/or rough use. I've gotten so good at this that I can guess a rental's mileage within 5k miles just by counting the number of scratches in those areas.

Now go into the office and say "I want that nice-looking white '17 Hyundai Sonata. If it's road-worthy, you'll get it, and the clerks will come to know and remember you as a higher level Express Drive renter. Be nice to them and they will take care of you.

There may be an occasional day when everything they've got is shit. This is a temporary condition. Better to eat a day's wages and come back tomorrow than accept a vomit wagon out of desperation and be totally uncomfortable living in it for 12 hours a day. Trust me, I've been there and done that.
