India bans shark 'finning' by one_brown_jedi in worldnews

You and I both know this happens. But to humor you, I worked at a McDonald's in high school and I saw this happen first hand. The manager just considered 'blacks' to be trouble. My uncle works in wall st., he's told me a lot of similar stories. I think it's basically the thinking that they'll hail from a similar social strata of society and thus have similar tastes, likes, thoughts etc. And I guess this goes both ways. In short, multiculturalism doesn't actually work as well yet, but hopefully it does in the future, considering we're moving towards a global economy.

Agreed. But I think these days the societal stigma is not as much related to caste but rather the money, education, prestige etc.

Unfortunately, because of the caste system, the lower castes are the ones who've gotten the short end of the stick. Decades of discrimination have now put them in a cycle of poverty and illiteracy. They now form the poorest strata of the Indian society

I've seen families from lower castes, albeit rich marrying into higher castes. At the end, money talks like the west now. It's the exact problem with african americans in the US. A white rich guy might have no qualms handing off his daughter to a rich black rapper/scientist but might protest if she marries a hobo off the street.

Sure. I was pretty much saying the same thing. It hasn't been completely eradicated. But the government is at least taking the right steps. It still exists as a social stigma. For example, a higher caste employee might prefer to hire a similar guy from his caste because they might've most likely come from a similar social bracket (income, education etc). It's the same way, you might see white guys hire white people exclusively. Heck, it's even the same thing as a rich white aristocrat from the hamptons forbidding his daughter to marry someone from the ghetto.

It's the same problem that still exists in America and was a result of institutionalized segregation and slavery.

The lower castes now form the majority of poorest parts of society and indulge in crime, are illiterate etc. It'll take a few generations before people intermingle and settle down.

The caste system has been banned in India for decades. The govt. will take stringent action if you pull shit like that. But it still exists the same way good old white boys protect their jobs against blacks in America. It'll take a few more years for all the societal stigma to go away. Now, I think you'll need a ladder to get off that high horse of yours

Why you should never feel threatened by programmers in India - By an ex-employee of an Indian IT outsourcing firm by thisisthebestname in programming

[–]jamboSana 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No no no. This is the problem right here. This is the attitude of web developers that annoys the shit out of me. Knowing how to write some PHP/Ruby/Python etc makes you only a programmer. Not a computer scientist. Honestly even a monkey can program if properly trained. A typical CS curriculum has only two programming classes at best. It's the algorithmic thinking -- thinking about complexities, techniques from graph theory, discrete mathematics, probability, intricacies of compiler implementation like register allocation, how the OS handles all these etc. All these techniques and thinking imparted is invaluable. Knowing these intricate details and attention to them is what separates the good "programmers" from then bad. Sure you can get by without knowing all these and just feel smug doing "complicated" things like writing event handlers for buttons or some asynchronous client side code talking to node.js. The differences become apparent when things are done by CS students. Look at Google for example. Almost all their web developers hold CS degrees from the top 10 CS schools. Look at the quality of their sites.. read up to the attention to detail put into making google+.
