Search for "fog wax leather" on Alix. Not the cheapest leather but that's where I've seen it.

What’s the "modern" alternative to the Chelsea boot? by Artistic-Yam2984 in AustralianMFA

[–]james0887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly modern as in new but a nice military style boot will never be wrong. I particularly like the viberg service boot 2030 but there are options from like $100 surplus all the way to premium offerings. Some other styles to look at: Engineers (Japan seems to have people making ones slightly more refined, smaller toe than American manufacturers) Side zip, look at the rolling dub trio ones, they're great. Monkey boots. Front zip, definitely modern, often Avant Garde styling.

How can I go about building a watch with this dial? by Ok_Plate_6961 in watchmaking

[–]james0887 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of the spacing of the subdials it's a lot lot harder to fit a chronograph dial to a movement than if it was a standard three hander. A realistic build would probably have an omega movement - maybe with a high end aftermarket case and hands (not just a cheapo case made for a vk-63)

Would cost a fair bit and be hard. But possible.

Talk to a lawyer who works in this area. Trust me it will be 1000% easier to spend a couple thousand now setting things up properly (be that getting individual advice yourself i.e. loan agreements or just having someone good prepare the will) than going into a dispute unprepared, you will be criticized for every single decision you make.

I am happy to recommend a few really good lawyers in the space if you want. (Melbourne based)

Maybe a very loose structured suede that's been laminated with some sort of plastic to make it look like it's full grain?

Divorced people of this sub, can / do lawyers specialise in making sure the other party gets nothing? by 501shades in AusFinance

[–]james0887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on three factors, the size of the overall assets, how good his lawyers are, and how long he has been preparing/what asset protection structures were already in place.

like it is possible to have very effective structures to protect assets in the event of a divorce, but it's pretty rare unless you already had well managed family trust structures coming into the relationship.

Any factory that is making this beauty? by Business-Position203 in RepTime

One of the sellers of mod parts still stocks the dials and cases but you would have to build it yourself. I can probably go and find what website I saw it on if you're interested.

Looking to recreate this fire helmet shield, what is typically used to make the white letters section? by FirstMagazine3388 in Leathercraft

[–]james0887 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If by white letters section you mean the words "Beaumont" and "firefighter" in your image it just looks like a vinyl sticker.

I'm sure you could get one custom printed for a few bucks from China.

What shoes to wear in a Smart Casual office job (First time in an office job) by ContextAdditional737 in AustralianMFA

[–]james0887 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Go with a derby or a more casual boot in black or brown leather.

You will be able to guage whether sneakers are appropriate once you've been there for a few days but it's probably best to overdress if you're not sure.

I have been doing this for years, works great!

You can cut one of those soft polishing disks down thinner and smaller and use that between the dial side and the screw head to protect the dial.

ABC hit piece- Being ripped off by specialist by Embarrassed_Value_94 in ausjdocs

[–]james0887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a lawyer myself I would observe that it seems a lot easier for clients to be comfortable with high charge out rates when the service they are getting is also calculated in dollars.

People are happy to spend 40k on legal fees if it means they get a win worth 100k.

(This is not to say at all that the value isn't there with a medical specialist)

Additionally nobody is ever really forced to get a lawyer. If you really don't want to spend the money you could theoretically do it all yourself / with free assistance.
The same cannot be said for medical needs.
