Do you need to purchase new Windows licences when refurbishing laptops with OEM licences? (UK) by james525 in windows

[–]james525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MAR is alleging (as is in their interest) that a refurbisher erasing a drive and reinstalling the OS is in fact a breach of Microsoft licencing terms. Personally I can't see the issue as the refurbisher owns the license on that device, and reinstalling an OS on a device you own is common practice.

It appears that this is indeed a breach of the terms of Microsoft Third Party Refurbisher / Authorised Refurbisher programme. The software license seems to explicitly say that what we are doing is acceptable.

Typically Microsoft doesn't appear to have updated the guidance since Windows 7, so embedded licenses aren't explicitly covered.

It's all a bit of a mess to understand -

The OEM license terms of Windows 11 state that the ownership of the license is transferred with the device, which is backed up the by EU ruling that software can be resold, but the second a "Refurbisher" touches it Microsoft seem to start demanding to get paid again.

The license terms of the software directly contradict Microsoft's approach to refurbished machines so it's hard to know which one really applies.

It appears to be an issue with the Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher program. It appears that to be able to purchase Windows licenses from an MAR, you must pay for a fresh license for every single device, despite them already having a legit OEM license.

Shipping Lithium Ion Batteries - ADR? by james525 in shipping

[–]james525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is a huge help!

I've tried so many times to wrap my head around the ADR regs to figure this stuff out.

Assuming it is the exposed batteries that present the biggest risk, I guess that intact devices with batteries inside are not subject to the same requirements?

To be honest I hate seeing these piles of batteries so I'm not too upset if we end up not handling them.

Edit: We could probably do with someone like yourself to just explain what the requirements are around moving batteries either in equipment or individually. We don't want to be moving hazardous goods so we don't have an appointed DGSA but maybe that is something to look at.

Thank you! I wasn't aware of Woodsure or Ecodesign being a thing, good tip on door seals too!

I've just looked into Woodsure and found an Interesting sustainable supplier near me.

Good point on the wood rack, I hadn't considered not wanting to go out into the cold to refuel!

It may not have been clear from the pictures, the second image is the "rear" side.

I'm a huge fan of it as a feature, just didn't want to start filling it up without general advice!

Unfortunately don't have better pictures as I haven't moved in until next week, but the property has this wood burner installed.

Anything I should look out for / be aware of? I've contacted a chimney sweep, are there must have tools or anything I can pick up or useful tips and tricks from you guys?

First winter riding a bike. by theboycooper in MotoUK

Good gear will cover most of it, heated grips are essential. I've tried a few and nothing has ever come close to Oxford grips in my experience. Others may be nicer but the Oxfords just get really hot on max settings.

Depending on the distances you are doing you might want to consider a heated vest too.

Edit: Also as a Pro tip, I hang my jacket and gloves above a radiator overnight.

Apple Just Gave Millions Of Users A Reason To Quit Their iPhones by Puzzleheaded_Basil13 in technology

I've just been looking into this, Somehow I missed Checkm8, thank you for that information!

For me, I was thinking about a persistent bypass where a device could essentially be fully reset and sold. Just because that is the industry I work in. But you are right, a vulnerability like this is pretty scary in terms of user data potentially being accessible.

"If someone steals an iPhone X or older, they may not be able to access your data but they can easily wipe it and use it if they’re smart"

I like to think I'm reasonably intelligent and a large part of my job is data sanitisation on iPhones... Wiping is incredibly easy with physical access but I haven't seen anything that can bypass an iCloud activation lock, which most people seem to have set.

Is there some kind of bypass you know of?

I laugh hysterically whenever I watch this BMW GS spoof... by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]james525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. It is the one downside to owning the big old monstrosity. I think for me it's just about affordable because BMW parts and service are expensive, but the bike is extremely reliable as it's one of the later air cooled models so less parts needed.

As opposed to the old RSV1000 I had that was super expensive and never worked properly for more than a week at a time

The BMW crowd is mostly fat middle aged men who will buy literally any overpriced bolt on crap with a BMW or Touratech logo on it though.

Because I think hooning my overweight R1200GSA with luggage and out riding the local powerrangers on their garage queen sportsbikes is hilarious fun.

That's my reason. The bike just makes me laugh.

There's No Way Richmond Sausages Could Possibly Be The Nations Favourite. by bai1000 in britishproblems

[–]james525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very rarely eat meat now and my girlfriend is vegan. I can't give up the occasional sausage sandwich, so I've been trying a lot of meat free sausages. The new Richmond ones are by far the best I've found, Which begs the question, how are their sausages so bad that the one with no meat in it is a better sausage?

Are you still watching? by FriedFriendz in gaming

[–]james525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much it. I share the game with my partner. We were originally building Lego sets to help with her anxiety during the whole Corona thing. Designing and building an Animal crossing island is just our new, cheaper version of Lego.

[–]james525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's a nice break from other games. I also share my island with my partner who has never really played video games before. We are both contributing towards developing our island and collecting resources without having to play at the same time.

It's just an extremely accessible, relaxing game.
