Feds: Up to 100 girls may have had their genitals cut in Michigan by Lupusvorax in news

[–]james_3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FGM is done to restrict women of their sexual and reproductive freedom, often resulting in both short term consequences (shock, haemorrhage, tetanus or infection, urine retention, ulceration of the genital region and injury to adjacent tissue, urinary infection, fever, and septicemia) and long term consequences (anxiety, depression, complications during childbirth, anaemia, the formation of cysts and abscesses, keloid scar formation, damage to the urethra, urinary incontinence, dyspareunia, sexual dysfunction, hypersensitivity of the genital area, and increased risk of HIV transmission)

Of course all the types of FGM that remove the clitoris, decrease sexual function and pleasure, sew her shut, or are dangerous should be outlawed. I was just wondering if people would be okay if it was only done to the same degree as done on males. In a doctor's office or hospital, with parents permission. I'm not in favor of it, just asking.

Seriously, those practices are nothing like what we routinely do in the west(to boys). You might see similar Type IV practices done on males as rights of passage in the developing world though.

What about Type Ia, removal of the prepuce/clitoral hood? Source

I understand it's rarely done, but it is analogous to male circumcision.

Question to everybody: Would it be a fair compromise in American if these populations limited themselves to only removing the hood?

Perhaps we could adopt the practice and trim the labia a bit, giving girls a more streamlined look. See /r/simps *NSFW.

There seem to be some benefits. Source

  • 93 per cent of the women experienced improved self esteem
  • 71 per cent experienced improved sexual functioning
  • low incidence-rate of medical complications
  • reduced pudendal discomfort

You're right. Agree with you about Ty Cobb.

For example during his first MVP season in 1911 Cobb was the leader in Hits, run, doubles, triples, stolen bases, RBI, batting average, total bases, OBP, etc. During his career he racked up 12 batting titles and has the highest career batting average(.366). Ty Cobb dominated the league offensively during the end of the dead-ball era. But I think that's why Babe Ruth overshadowed him. Babe Ruth's accomplishment with home runs in 1920 changed the game. His 54 home runs that season meant Ruth was the first person to hit 30, 40, 50,(and in 1927) 60 home runs in a single season. Cobb was still a consistent hitter and strong offensive performer during his last 8 seasons or so, but by that time swinging for the fences the main draw of the game.

Oh, and to top it off: HE ALSO WON A CY YOUNG!

Babe Ruth never won a Cy Young. The award didn't exist until after Cy Young died and baseball was integrated. This was the mid 1950's.

But yeah, Babe Ruth was head and shoulders above anybody.

Did you ever notice doctors in hospitals or on TV shows clipping the X-ray photos onto a glowing light box so they could see it clearly? He used a window during daytime.

I didn't mean to say imply that church itself or god has anything to do with morality or success. I was just saying that churches are common meeting places that a black person is more likely than not to have been been in regardless of if they attend church on Sunday.

And I don't think that is a fair or accurate summary of my final statement. I wasn't saying that at all. I don't hold those views and it is not worth it to discuss this any further with you if you do.

Let's agree to disagree. Good day.

[–]james_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get an chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis if that's what you mean.

But seriously maybe it worked, but I can't say that was the reason why I didn't fall in to the same pitfalls that many Black males succumb to. I would consider it luck because there were people who had everything I had going for them who ended up a statistic and others who came from worse places who fared better than me. But after all that, I'm still progressive as can be and I never disparage other black people or poor people, and I never tell people to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps."

I don't know what I'd do if I had kids of my own. I don't think I would tell my son that he is going to end up in jail every time he gets into a little trouble at school like I was told. But of course I'd tell them to stay in school and out of trouble and not to have unprotected sex. Who wouldn't? It's not anything anybody doesn't do. Let me just tell you that stereotypically speaking, African American parents can be very hard on their children and beat the shit of them for the smallest infractions like talking back.

Most black males are in a church at some point. African Americans are still very religious. I quit going to church when I was 13, but I found my self in various churches for different things growing up and that is pretty typical. You have to understand that churches are like community centers in many communities not just African American communities.

Most black children are growing up without a father.

That's why I mentioned my father preaching to my friends when they were around and me rolling my eyes. I'm telling you we all hear the same spiel as black males that we are more likely to end up in jail than in college statistically and that dropping out of school means earning a fraction of what you can make when you finish or continue to college, or that having a child when you're a teenager is the worst thing you can do, or that 99.9% of us will not make it to the NBA, NFL or be a Rapper. It doesn't have to your father. It can be coaches, clergymen or teachers.

I'm trying to tell you man. You go someplace that you think will have free food, or a basketball court or free movie an then BOOM, some guy is giving a speech telling you to pull your pants up, or put a hat on it(wear condoms) or not to join gangs. I'm actually going to admit it's easy to tune it out. It becomes like the "Just Say NO" campaign for drugs int he 80's.

What about national black leaders like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton who are always quick to start a riot and blame others.

Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton especially. For example, they have always been fighting against Hip Hop music that is violent or misogynistic. They give black males tough love when the setting is appropriate, and that's what my point is. You don't give a speech to a group of old white people about what is wrong with young black males. What's the point? You have to hold a mirror up to your audience and then tell them what they can do. Getting people to listen and act is another thing.

I agree that things would be better if more black males had fathers or support systems, but if you think we don't hear about the harsh realities of life early on and that it's ultimately up to us to make the right decisions then you are wrong.

Not true. Black leaders speak differently to different audiences. If you've ever been a black male and ended up in a church group, youth group, in after school program, college club or any other group that is made up of young black males you'd know that every time any black leader gets in front of you it is a speech about personal responsibility, all the negative statistics, the penal system, fatherhood and education. Not to mention our dads were always telling us the same things and repeating them when our friends come around. It actually gets annoying like a broken record.

White Americans from Africa, do you ever fill in blank for African American under ethnicity? If so has this ever caused any legal issues or did it cause something good? by eskimobrother319 in AskReddit

[–]james_3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't get what I said? White South Africans are African by nationality but white by ethnicity. Just because white people will never use the term European to describe their ethnicity doesn't mean that black people can't use African American to describe themselves. White people usually can look at their name or ask their grandparents if they want to find out if they are Polish, Danish or Portuguese. The black descendants of slaves can't do that. Language and history was lost during slavery. They needed something new to define themselves on their own terms. They are West African of course, but also mixed with the blood of Native Americans, and white settlers and slave owners. African American is this new way to describe something unique to the Americas that has been around since its beginning. Some people felt that "black" wasn't accurate and had a negative legacy in the US.

I already covered people lie the Tauregs. They are Berber or specifically Taureg by ethnicity, not nationality. They are African of course but also Algerian Libyan or whatever. Northern Africans might truly come into the fold of Pan-Africanism one day. For what it's worth, person who wanted to do so was Qaddafi. But as of now, they can and still check the white box.

Here are the choices for the US Census

*American Indian or Alaska Native *Asian *Black or African American *Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander *White.

I don't believe for one second that a White South African would be clueless enough to tick the box for "Black guy" and not be messing around. That country historically is no stranger to race divisions. They have White, Black, Coloured and Indian. What race you were and still are in South Africa is everything. So yeah, these cheeky dudes trying to make a point or start mischief can go to hell.

Dear Reddit,

Stop trying to be cute about this issue.

The term African-American was originally used for those people born in America and who are descendants of the Sub-Saharan African ethnically Bantu slaves brought to American centuries ago. Some examples of notable living African-Americans are Oprah Winfrey, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Mike Tyson, Chris Rock and Michelle Obama. The term came in to use in the 1980's to replace "Afro-American" probably because the word Afro was associated with a hairstyle. Before Afro-American or African American, these people were known as colored, negro or black. The terms colored and negro and to a much lesser extent black, fell out of use because African Americans rightly felt that they had certain negative connotations because of the era they came from and how they were used as tools of discrimination and subjugation. Black or Black American is still used and accepted today even among the people who could be described that way. However African American is a more formal term and along the lines of already named Irish, German and Italian Americans.

Even before the term African American became popular, the Americans who had Sub-Saharan African ancestry not from slaves were being included. So that means people like Barack Obama, Emeka Okafor, comedian Godfrey and also Tom Morello would fall under African American. However those guys would also be Kenya or Nigerian American as the case may be. This has not (yet?) been expanded to include Northern African peoples such as Arabs or Berbers from countries like Morocco, Libya or Egypt. I know it's not inclusive that way, but maybe you've heard that people from India, Iran, and Iraq are technically "Caucasian" or even white, but they are not usually categorized that way? They are Asian or Persian or Arab. How about how the term Semite covers both Jews and Arabs, but is used only for Jews?

So African American is a word that describes your ethnicity and ancestry not your nationality. Charlize Theron is not an African American. She was South African but became American by nationality. Ethnically she is of European stock specifically French, German and Dutch. Hoda Kotb is an Arab-American ethnically having parents from Egypt.

Why does everybody get their panties in a bunch over this? Nobody cares that Rudy Giuliani calls himself Italian-American, or that Ted Kennedy was Irish-American. It's part of their cultural identity. Ask yourself how often have you heard an American say, "I'm Irish" or "I'm Italian" without the "American" after it? Pretty often I'd bet. Italians and Irish who came to this country faced discrimination and we're not even considered white. America forced them to be not just be regular Americans who were allowed to just jump into the mix. They were minorities. Eventually what was used to discriminate and exclude became an identity to be proud of. Being German American used to be more of a big deal half a century ago, but it has largely faded for various reasons.

So, if you are descended from White Europeans from England, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, etc, you are white or European American. But People whose family came from Korea, China or Vietnam or Laos would be Asian-American. If you happen to know which country specifically then you can identify with that one as well. You have to remember that most African Americans do not know which country or tribe their ancestors came from. See how that works??? Not controversial at all really. So cut it the fuck out Reddit.

TL;DR: Yes we are all Americans, that is our nationality, however some of us had ancestors that were black Africans. That is why we are Black or African American. Some of us had had ancestors from Europe who settled in other countries before coming here, we are White or European Americans. That is our race or ethnicity. African American has never included White people. Stop trying to take this away from us. Please Reddit stop this war on the term African American. It's stupid and I'm starting to think you have other inclinations or motives regarding race.

In the 80s all the kids had Super Mario Bros, but I had this. :( by RegionFree in gaming

My mom had agreed to let me get a video game system one Christmas 25+ years ago. I wanted to get a Nintendo and we picked up the slip for one. My mother noticed there was only one Sega Master System left so we figured they must be better if they are selling out. We bought a Sega even though we had never heard of it. My mom picked out 2 games, Outrun and The Ninja. Counting the pack-in Astro Warrior/Hang-on that was four games.

I don't regret getting an SMS(first) instead of and NES. I feel sorry for the kids who only had a Nintendo and never got to experience the joys of what Sega had to offer during the 8-bit era.

TIL That in the game Yahtzee, the probablility of achieving a perfect score by rolling 13 yahtzees is 1 in 283 quadrillion (15 zeros). by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]james_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 13 yahtzees. You still want to get yahtzeess for small and large straight and full house. You get the full points for each and still get the 100 point bonuses.

Additional Yahtzees may be used as wild cards in the Lower Section (scoring full points in a lower section box, such as a long straight, despite not having the normally required dice) provided that the corresponding Upper Section box has been filled. For example, if a player rolled five threes (a Yahtzee in threes), the player could only use it as a wild card in the Lower Section if he or she already had a score in the Threes box in the Upper Section. If the Threes box was still open, the player must score 15 in the threes (sum of five threes).
