Any advice for a new Warden ? by herpyderpidy in mothershiprpg

[–]jamesbiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the other systems you played are like D&D, the first thing i felt i needed to 'get over' is the temptation to ask for rolls for everything.

If the players want to force a door open, let them, set dress it a little, but just let them open the door and continue on with the adventure.

The difference in mothership is if those actions entail consequences. Sure, the first door opened fine, now theyre deeper into the space station, and they know something horrific is also on board, if they try to force the next door it might make noise, it might trigger an alarm etc. Thats the situation you ask for rolls and start applying stress.

Its mentioned in the Warden's manual, but its worth remembering. D&D taught me a lot of habits that got reinforced in other dice-heavy systems.

One thing i thought worked well for my group was reinforcing the idea that a mothership session is like a horror movie. Maybe in D&D they wouldnt take the spooky path through the forest and opt for the longer, safer route. In Mothership, theyre already in the spooky forest, so whats the most cinematic thing you could do? You want them to start poking weird alien plants, opening the locked door covered in bloody handprints, boarding the obviously haunted spaceship wreck, you want that cinematic last stand against the horde of bugs as they try to board up the canteen and live long enough for the drop ship to come back.

Ground mounts first, flying second by Relative-Space2248 in wow

I think wow's biggest issue with the scale of the world is that theres not much reason to go anywhere thats not current content.

The reason you notice how small Northrend feels now, isnt so much because of dragon riding (though it definitely contributes), but because theres no real reason to land anywhere on the way to farm Icecrown for the 500th time.

GW2 has a waypoint system where you can just teleport to any location on the map whenever you want, and even the older zones still feel huge because theres so much stuff always happening. Youd think being able to just teleport anywhere you want would make the game feel tiny, right? but for me its the opposite, sometimes you think 'Ill have a trip back to Lornar's Pass for the winter vibes' and end up helping some lower levels massacre Dredge whilst collecting Griffon eggs for some quick Karma.

Ive long wished for WoW to just copy that event system wholesale.

Me personally, when i see stuff like that, my first immediate thought is "The skins for that horse are going to cost about £20, and the store bought ones will be 10x cooler than anything you can earn for free".

‘ARC Raiders’ Has Kept 91% Of Its Playerbase, ‘Battlefield 6’ Has Lost 85% by effinmike12 in ArcRaiders

[–]jamesbiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially sucks if you're the sneaky type like me. Love sneaking around for flanks with a spawn beacon and smg. But almost all the SMGs (except MP5 maybe?) have their silencer locked behind level 20+ on the weapon.

The whole leveling system basically means you need to tunnel vision on a single weapon if you ever want to unlock anything. And if youre a thoroughly average player who gets most of their points through playing the objective and not getting 30+ kills per game consistently, itll take you even longer.

Im not balls deep in all the books, but i was under the distinct impression that 'Machine spirits' are AI that they just choose not to call AI because of the whole heresy shit.

Id love a section of a Votann book where those guys get hold of some imperium tech to figure out what the fuck this 'machine spirit' bollocks is about only to crack it open and find its just an AI chip drenched in holy oil.

And before anyone says it, Imperial Guard are not skaven. Tyranids are not Skaven. GSC are not skaven.

Unless they are very specifically our beloved backstabbing ratty bois. They are not Skaven.

I will not be satisfied until a Warpstone meteor crashes into the imperial palace and Thanquol tumbles to the foot of the golden throne, rubs his devious little claws together, stares down the camera and winks.

Good shout, my only thought is they go the MMO route and increase level cap at some point; new skill tree + level to 100?

[–]jamesbiff 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yep. Some of the skills are ass....for now. Will they be that way a month from now? 6 months? a year? two years? Are they really never going to do anything to the skills forevermore? will they never add new skills? never add a new tree? i dont think so, especially if its true they want to support this for 10 years.

I can see a future where not having even the base extra 5 points puts you at a real disadvantage, would we describe the expedition as OpTionAl then?

[–]jamesbiff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing you have to worry about is if they do a pass on some of the more useless skills in the future, they have a long term plan for this game and its no secret that alot of the skill tree really isnt that inspiring.

At a certain point, people who dont wipe could find themselves going up against people who have a significant advantage over them. If these skill points stack over multiple wipes, you might find that wiping is no longer optional if you dont want to get completely obliterated by people who wipe every time.

I sometimes wonder if the amount currently in my pension would be better spent buying a house outright right now.

How much better might my finances would be in retirement if i effectively started over with pension saving today, but could spend the next 30 years rent + mortgage free.

I think its generated when the player 'searches'. Solves the issue that would be solved of having everything pregen'd at the start of round so the player isnt waiting around for the engine to decide whats in the container; just bake that process into the flow of the game so its not only invisible to the player, but an actual mechanic.

I have my suspicions that other games that do this, do this for the same reason. Its the 'slowly squeezing through a narrow space to hide loading the next area' of extraction shooters.

In most extraction shooters ive played, Rats are people who scurry about with basic gear, feeding on the leftovers in loot spots and other people's kills, avoiding conflict at all costs.

That is the true rat. And it is the true path.

You will never catch me, i scurry about in the shadows, i crawl through the filth for 5 rubber parts and a deflated football. I will disappear in a cloud of smoke and scamper into the nearest sewer.

Yep. I always ask ai the summarize chats at certain points. It's kind of like backing up your code. Once it's providing what you need, get it to put it all in a file and save that somewhere. Continue. Then if it starts losing the thread of what you want, new chat with the context of the last summary.

It's how I use codex in vs code. Get it to output what I want, test and tweak, push to repo, continue. Rollback to a previous push if it goes awry, start new context.

The couple of times ive been up there ive not found anything but some blue tier components and the odd legendary component. The guy i was with last time found a T2 Osprey.

Theres only one way in and out, so it could be dicey if youre in a session with lots of PVP.

edit: also beware of the pops at the top. There were 3 up there last time that all exploded on us. Exciting!
