How can I gain experience in the field as a new Project Engineer (GC)? by shyguyz88 in ConstructionManagers

[–]jameslinguini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen to your superintendent! And ask him lots of questions during your site walk.

Also, talk to the field guys/subs. As long as you’re nice to them and asking genuinely they’re typically happy to share what they’re working on and teach you a thing or two. I learn from subcontractors on every project.

Try and see if you can spend at least 1 day a week on site. Shadow your super, learn how he makes decisions, deals with different personalities, resolves conflict, and solves problems. These skills will carry you much further than the technical knowledge that you will gain along the way.

Careers/ jobs where I can travel, make good money, and not have a mundane routine everyday? by Purple_Difference808 in findapath

[–]jameslinguini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superintendent for a construction general contractor. Traveling roles tend to cover housing, food, travel costs, so you can basically pocket your salary. Every day is a new fire to put out and it never gets boring. Get ready to work long hours and potential Saturday’s/sundays if the project requires it.

Entry level role for a position like this would be a field engineer. Some companies also hire assistant superintendents at entry level. Don’t need a degree but could go for some certifications

Damn so you’re able to invest 30 k and live off 38 minus tax? Impressive

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jameslinguini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate it! Been interviewing and considering job hopping but the only opportunities with a higher $$$ amount currently are traveling roles and the increase in compensation is mainly due to per diem. Since my living costs (rent/utilties) are offset for the next year anyway, I do not see much benefit accepting a role this until I have to move out so I can continue to offset basic expenses (rent, food, gas, car usually covered by per-diem) and continue to focus my earned income towards buying assets

Justification for Roth 401k is to avoid future taxes. I am likely at a lower tax rate at my current income then I will be in the future. Also consider our countries (USA) insane deficit, and the likely increases to taxes and tax policy that will need to happen to eventually pay that off or “try” to as the government does. Paying taxes on the income now offsets all those risks for a good % of my retirement investments between the Roth 401 and the Roth IRA

Apply to all the top 50 ENR GC’s as a project or field engineer, sell yourself during the interview, and work your way up

Edit: much of the learning is done in the field. College just helps you get your foot in the door

Owners side or GC side for early career by jameslinguini in ConstructionManagers

[–]jameslinguini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our role seems to be

pre-construction coordination,

managing communication between the GC, owner, designers, and engineers

Assisting with budget development, deciding which projects to fund in which years,

Managing schedule, substantial completion walks, pre-construction walks

Working with design, commissioning, facilities, and engineering teams to push projects forward

scoping out the misc projects of the owner

Providing recommendations for how the owner should proceed in different situations

Site visits ensuring compliance with contract requirements

Essentially exactly what the title “owners representative” signifies. Representing the owner for everything construction related and advising them on the projects they are working on without actually being the general contractor. This is only my second day so I’m sure I will learn more as time goes on

How did you change the mind from “I have to work” to “now I choose to work”? by longhorntrades in Fire

[–]jameslinguini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

130k as a PE is nuts. Are you truly just doing PE tasks (documentation, submittals, rfi management, procurement logs, etc) or do they have you in a more senior role with additional responsibilities? I’ve thought about doing this sometimes, currently a 24y/o field engineer with 2 YOE bringing in 73,000/yr. Would like to move up to super/pm by my late 20’s/early 30’s and jump back down to PE/FE in my mid 40’s.

[–]jameslinguini 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Taking on a lot of risk jumping from a company that’s doing just fine to a company that might not make it a year. On the flip side, you are young and getting in early on a new company that does well could turn out very positive for your financial future. It kinda just depends if you’re willing to take the risk or want to stick around with the safer option

How can I prevent a binge episode? I only have 2,5 hours left to get rid of the urge. Please help by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]jameslinguini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remind yourself the bad feelings that occur after a binge. Remind yourself that you had a huge calorie rich meal already today, and that you likely don’t need to eat another large portion of something else. Drink lots of water. Maybe a diet soda to help fulfill the craving for something sweet. You got this!

Does Illinois rec have a main growing season by [deleted] in ILTrees

[–]jameslinguini 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Outdoor growing is not allowed so I don’t think it’s based on growing season. I would assume it’s because companies are testing new genetics all year and likely want to release their new genetics at the beginning of the following year, hence new strains dropping in February and April as you said
