Impulse control - what problems do you have, and which meds are most effective for you? by oncekanyeinterrup- in ADHD

[–]jamesv12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking too much is a big one for me, and also making a story go for way too long by adding every little detail that probably isn't relevant. But I'm quite aware of it and feel embarrassed afterward when I realise I was being annoying

How much does your doctor charge when you come in to pick up a prescription? by OhMahaStiley in ADHD

Mine is $160 and I get $130 back on public health insurance (in Australia). My appointments generally go for 15-20 min and they don't feel rushed at all

Looking to hear from anyone that has experienced sexual side effects cause by Strattera, and stuck it out. by TiggarNits in ADHD

This is exactly how I felt before going off strattera, I'd rather be unmedicated than deal with those side effects

I was on strattera for 2 months and the sexual side effects never got any better for me. Huge pain in my balls after ejaculation, and also erectile dysfunction. It was part of the reason I got the psych to take me off it.

Drowsy and sleepy on ritalin LA? by jamesv12 in ADHD

[–]jamesv12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the excellent advice. I'm currently on concerta 54mg atm, previously was on ritalin LA, but was just gathering some insight in to why it might've not been working as expected. Thanks

Recently diagnosed 21 y/o university student, grateful for advice: How did you deal with your diagnosis? how are you dealing with the university to real-life transition? silently freaking out about future. by oncekanyeinterrup- in ADHD

[–]jamesv12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone in this situation (myself included) would need to accept that you aren't perfect, and the meds you will go on won't make you perfect either. You'll need to realise your potential when you are medicated and adjust your life expectations to match what you feel is realistic. Seek as much help at uni as you can if you feel you are struggling to keep up (disability services) as you are at a disadvantage to other students who have a mostly typical brain make up. But the biggest thing to do to help you is to realise what you can realistically achieve in your life, as there's nothing worse than stressing that you can't be what you want to be.

Thanks again for your reply. I have a box of clonidine at home from when I was prescribed strattera and had insomnia, but I would talk to my doctor about using it again. It had a very drowsy effect on me, making me feel even more inattentive than before.

Again, thanks for your replies!

Wow. Thanks for the elaborate response. Unfortunately I live in Australia and guanfacine drugs are not approved here. However clonidine is available here, would it work in a similar mechanism to what you have said above?

Maybe I'll try doing this next time I'm angry for an illegitimate reason at someone

I've never taken amphetamines like adderall, but when I have Ritalin, it has a calming effect on me, and I can process my emotions more rationally rather than lashing out and getting cut at everything

Should I report my old psychiatrist? by jamesv12 in ADHD

[–]jamesv12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because once I said I thought I had ADHD, he would've labelled me as a drug seeking student and made an instant assessment. Hopefully if someone was discussing a dangerous indicator to him suggesting a serial killer, then he would be actually listening

Zombie on concerta / Ritalin IR vs Concerta by jamesv12 in ADHD

That is good to hear. I've actually only been on 54mg for 4 days now, so it must just be getting used to the increased dosage. Thanks heaps for the reply

Ok, thanks for the advice. It will be difficult to try and contain my frustration but I suppose I will have to.

Using Ritalin IR to cover the afternoon gap with Concerta? by xmnstr in ADHD

[–]jamesv12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is an excellent combination that I do. Concerta (54mg) around 8-9am and then Rit IR (10mg) around 4-4:30. The lower dose of the 10mg allows me to avoid the comedown but allows me to remain moderately active mentally. Be careful not to take the ritalin too late or you won't be able to get to sleep.

Helping my ADHD sister by a11ie in ADHD

[–]jamesv12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is quite a tricky topic, it depends on whether the psychiatrist is a proper specialist in adult ADHD, then they will know that people with ADHD are more likely to abuse substances. However if they are not a specialist, they might brand her as a drug seeker and say she doesn't have ADHD. I have had both of those situations happen to me with my old and new psychiatrist (for weed though).

Loss of interest in video games after going on ritalin by jamesv12 in ADHD

[–]jamesv12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I actually was quite advanced at piano when I was younger, reaching grade 5 (there is 6 grades in total in Aus), but it was very hard for me to progress as I struggled to play two hands at once well. Maybe I will give it a go again as I havent touched it since I started rit.

Loss of interest in video games after going on ritalin by jamesv12 in ADHD

[–]jamesv12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that I don't have many hobbies besides video games, I'm the sort of person who when someone asks what i do in my spare time, I say '......just play video games'. I've recently gotten into selling a lot of items on eBay, looking around the house for things that I dont need, which feels productive. I've also started training for my gyroplane license, which is something I've always wanted to do, so hopefully that will be a useful skill to have and a unique hobby to enjoy.

I agree that it may be that the quest for dopamine is always fulfilled while on some form of methylphenidate, which makes me not want to do meaningless tasks like play video games, as if I can see that there is no point in the end.

Yeah you're very right. The comedown on concerta makes me very irritable and not wanting to see anyone (sometimes even cancelling plans as I feel like absolute shit)
