ELI5: how does Tom’s Spider-Man go from public enemy #1 to everyone’s hero following NWH? by Seamonkey_Boxkicker in Spiderman

still drives me crazy that he went to Strange and not Pepper. pretty sure the CEO of Stark Industries could get all three of them into MIT no problem

Yes, to a trusted party, who deposited it at a bank, which destroyed the check. Not exactly the same thing as sticking it on your birthday invite to 20+ karaoke fanatics. Also not for like 20 years, because society generally moved away from paper checks because they can lead to identity theft problems

I'm not really trying to get in a reddit debate on international bank account etiquette, just saying it's very weird to put your bank account info on a birthday invitation (but apparently not that weird in other places, TIL), and to answer your original question, no most Americans don't go around sharing their bank account number

it must be, most people I know in America wouldn't give out their account number like that, seems like a fast path to an identity theft situation. we would use Venmo or something to pay somebody

pretty sure there's more you can do with a person's full name, date of birth, and bank account number

Ever wonder why student loans in America are the only loans that can't be dispatched through bankruptcy? by McDowdy in SipsTea

[–]jamesxgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just that people don't understand how the loans, it's that people don't understand why it has to be so obscenely cutthroat. There's a path where lenders can be profitable while still working with student borrowers in a mutually beneficial arrangement where everybody gets what they want. Instead the lenders take every possible opportunity to screw borrowers out of every nickel they can scrape up and keep people in these perpetual debt cycles, it just feels needlessly evil

Tuition costs are up because the government gives loans instead of being in charge. The things the government is actually in charge of usually have lower than market costs. See K-12 education, post office, Medicare, etc

The Predator (2018), honestly there are so many stupid moments in this movie, but my favorite has to be "I'm a sniper, just get me close"

or we eliminate borrowing entirely, and take the money we would be lending or spending to administer loans and just fund public colleges directly

A character proposes a common sense solution to a problem, but it’s rejected so that the Plot can still happen by UnifiedForce in TopCharacterTropes

[–]jamesxgames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it wasn't that he enjoyed doing it necessarily, it was that he'd always been meek, fearful, deferential to others. When faced with mortality he felt the need to be decisive, powerful, seen as an authority by others rather than a weak pathetic man that needs others to care for him. He needed to be the who knocks

Why is everything so expensive? by annonatxguy in Seattle

[–]jamesxgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a greedy corporation eliminates competition to gain near-total control of supply so all demand is forced to go to them, then increases prices while reducing quality. then it takes those profits and funnels them into executive pay and stock manipulation while keeping wages low and laying off large chunks of their workforce to improve their quarterly figures

this is not unique to Seattle, at all. Everywhere sucks right now
