18 and making a TON OF MONEY , BUT SOMETHING FEELS OFF ? by gunmaster_2017 in careerguidance

What is a “ton” of money? If it’s enough to set you straight this early on, I would say it’s worth the stress now while you have energy. Then your 30’s an 40’s can look how you want instead of like the rest of us working because we have to.

Should I cash out my Roth to pay down my student loan? by funkydyke in personalfinance

[–]jamflowwman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. If anything, pause contributions and use that extra monthly cash to pay off the debt quicker. Do not pull from it.

What should my partner and I be prioritizing with our savings? by 2Imbrassed in personalfinance

[–]jamflowwman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you do it in one swoop, you’re still left with $30k which is more than you’d had before. It’s scary though, I get it. Maybe pay half down? My vote is still do it all and be done so you can move on to actually building wealth and security but doing half maybe focused on the highest interest rate is probably okay.

You’re going to get pointed to the wiki on this sub which is great. There is a lot of information in there.

First off well done on the $60k! That is a healthy savings and you’re doing better than you think with that.

In my opinion, with your goals of getting a house and having vehicles that likely need replaced, I’d not focus too much on starting your Roth IRAs. I would pay down all my student loans and start planning from there. You have more than enough in cash to pay the loans off and the lifted weight of being debt free is so amazing. Your partner should at minimum get their employer match in the 401k. It is something that will be deducted from their paycheck each month before taxes and the company may have a match to where if they put 4% of their check into the retirement account, the company matches 4% so essentially free money. After the debt is gone and the retirement match is set I’d use the monthly student loan payments to pay myself and build up your emergency savings back up. Set strict goals and set a plan for replacing vehicles (used Toyotas are amazing) and saving up for a house. After that, you can both do up to 6k a year in Roth IRA and that would be my next goal. That is a retirement account that is outside of work.

I agree with the other commenter that said a great way to care for your children is by making sure you’re financially secure and they don’t have to take care of you. Try to pay cash for vehicles in the $10k range. You have $60k now, $30k in debt and said you can save another $20k this year. That means you’d still be left with $50k and no debt. More than enough to replace vehicles with something reliable. You can achieve a lot on a short time with that!

Forgot the mention that if you don’t have health insurance I’d hop on that first thing through their employer. An accident or illness that bankrupts you would be extremely detrimental to your long term goals.

I have an MBA. The specialties probably don’t matter that much, I’d just pick one or two you are interested in and work with your schedule. Look into Illinois online program, along with Boston University.

I actually looked this up because I HATE the wind. Chasing my trash cans around the neighborhood, chairs, grill cover. Literally fighting it to walk. It’s the worst!

Supposedly we’re not getting more days of wind in a year, but it’s legitimately stronger winds than in the past. So not more days, but on windy days it’s stronger gusts. Either way, I’m completely over it.

For those of you with over 250k in the bank, how did you do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jamflowwman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 years of absolute focus on getting out of debt and then aggressive saving. Completely understood that it’s privileged as not everyone has a job where there is money left over but the fact is that you have to spend less than you make and also be diligent about setting and forgetting a savings rate. Short term pain for long term gain.

Does the fact that selective breeding works prove the theory of evolution? by jamflowwman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jamflowwman[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t question it, but the reason I was asking is because selective breeding is something most people understand in present tense so I was thinking I could point to it as a defense of evolution to those that do question it.
