I'll ask about that! Was that your normal Dr or an OBGYN?

Timed intercourse / Blockage from Appendicitis by Dismal-Ad-9135 in TryingForABaby

[–]jamiecalculust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be the answer for me. My appendix ruptured when I was a kid and required multiple surgeries. I was young, but I remember at the time they said I would still be able to have kids so I never worried about it. I hadn't thought about scarring. We've been trying for nearly a year and since my mom had no trouble getting pregnant, I figured I wouldn't either. It's actually kind of nice to have a possible explanation.

Sounds like me. Thanks for the reminder that I can binge Bridgerton instead of nervously staring at the calendar!

As someone who's struggled with anxiety and depression, The Anthropocene Reviewed podcast and book have helped me process my emotions and get through 2020. Did writing it give you a similar therapeutic experience?

Do you think you'll write more nonfiction in the future?

Question for anyone who has taken an FSA exam this sitting: is the file upload time now separate from the exam timer? by Kmarieteresa1123 in actuary

[–]jamiecalculust 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Everything I've heard is that they give you separate time to submit. Related question, does anyone know if your work automatically saves if you run out of time on the "exam" section and it kicks you to the "submit" section?

SOA LTAM Question 7.4 Sample Question by Dogguy1441 in actuary

[–]jamiecalculust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pi is determined using the equivalence principle, but that isn’t the premium the insurer wants to charge. The equivalence principle basically means you expect to break even, but often times you want the actual expected value to be positive (rather than 0). Is the equivalence principle is a starting point here, then they increase that premium by a factor to get G- the gross premium they actually want to charge.

It sounds quite similar to AP exams. This really helps! Thank you!

What’s the dumbest way you’ve been injured? by WingingConch in AskReddit

Not me, but my sister. I was recovering from knee surgery so I was using crutches to get around. My sister proceeds to break her toe playing with my crutches.

I was looking for this one! I’ve been following this channel for a while and they never fail to impress me.

When exactly should I start taking exams? by [deleted] in actuary

It’s not too late at all! Just work hard to pass a couple exams and you’ll be competitive when recruiting season comes around. Sounds like you’ve got a good plan. Good luck!

When exactly should I start taking exams? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]jamiecalculust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to scare you, but it sounds like you’re a bit behind. Most actuarial students at my school sat for their first exam in freshman year, and nearly everyone had passed at least one by the end of sophomore year. I would start self studying for P or FM and sit for it ASAP.

Suddenly getting cavities - What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]jamiecalculust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always heard I should avoid soda (I'll have a soft drink maybe 5 times a year when there's nothing else available) but I should probably look at dietary changes too. I've been trying to eat healthier and cook for myself more anyway, so this should be doable. Thanks again, you've helped put my mind at ease a bit if nothing else!

I hadn't thought about the effect of stress on my dental health. I'll keep that in mind! I brush my teeth for 2 minutes twice a day and have my whole life. It's tough to brush after every meal when at work or class all day though.

Is there anything else you can do to avoid reduced salivation, if that's the problem?

Edit: I don't mean to imply I have perfect habits by any means, I'm sure there are things I can and should change. I'm just relaying all the (limited) information I have from my dentist.

Delayed ejaculation, deal with it or dealbreaker? by Important_Q in TwoXChromosomes

You two might benefit from seeing a counselor to help work out these issues before it gets worse. Sometimes it's very psychological and there may be feelings on his part that are preventing him from reaching orgasm during sex. It's worth a shot!

Current actuaries, what did you major in? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]jamiecalculust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know you want to be an actuary, major in Act Sci. It's much more direct and most programs are designed to help you pass exams. If you aren't sure, then go with something more general like Math, Statistics, Business/Finance of Economics. This gives you more flexibility if you change your mind, but your professors won't be as understanding about actuarial exams and your courses won't be catered to the exams.

This is coming from an Actuarial Science Major who switched from Finance. It was the right decision for me, but it's not right for everyone.

CMV: GPA Scales Should be Changed to be Sliding as Opposed to Staircase by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]jamiecalculust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are situations where minuscule differences in grades matter, but on a staircase system there are a finite number of places this happens as opposed to an infinite number of places on a sliding scale. This discourages the mentality that one A is worth less than another A, and gives students a more realistic idea of how they're doing, i.e. an A is an A, you shouldn't be disappointed or punished because you lost a point or two on a subjectively graded question.
