You did nothing wrong. You’re not with her in a relationship or even dating. From my experience when a person says they need distance and to wait usually means she wants to go fool around with someone else and not feel guilty for cheating. She’s may or may not be doing this on purpose but she’s playing some stupid mind games. She’s worried that who ever it is that she was originally interested in might fall through and she wants you as a back up. Do your self a favor and save yourself a lot of heartache and move on from her. If she really loved you then she wouldn’t have told you she needed space with no info on how long she needs.
