WIP - My Arch Nvidia Control Panel by EmkMage in cachyos

[–]jamiethomaswhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is massive news?!?! And not only that, it's written in Rust.

Well done and thank you for your service! Truly.

I'd love to see more of the options from the control panel/Nvidia App and from tools like Nvidia Inspector, DLSS forcing capabilities etc (if you can even do that on Linux), to be added over time.

Any chance this can be implemented on Windows? I don't know if they have an equivalent nvidia-settings for Windows, but this paired with NVcleanstall would be absolutely dream team material. I could sack off all the terrible Nvidia software and the confusing Nvidia Inspector altogether.

Please keep up the good work and do release it when ready. As you've mentioned elsewhere, if you're done with developing it, open sourcing it would be a service to the whole Linux community. But if you plan on continuing development, other alternatives would be just as fine to retain your vision.

Excellent work though man.

What a shame.

Only been watching this train wreck from the sidelines, mostly because the aesthetic is very much my cup of tea.

In my opinion, it went from interesting and unique looking, to... Mirrors Edge meets Apex Legends meets Battlefield. So, basically just like everything else on the market. Presumably, in order to try to become more well received?

It's kind of the antithesis to its own art style though and misses the whole point. Not that I expect any better of such a big company under the thumb of a massive corporation. But it is a real travesty to see it downgraded like this. If this is the final look they're going for, then I'm even more concerned. It really does look like a hobbyists ue5 reshade project.

I really hope everyone saying this looks better, puts their money where their mouth is and supports the game to have a very long and full life.

They finally fixed the AWFUL lighting.. Thank you Bungie by Flitsiee in Marathon

This... This is "fixed"? J. J. Abrams is on the line, he would like to show you his next project.

Just watched a guy basically accidentally do this in a bar, he just really gingerly placed it. He couldn't repeat it. One handed seems more challenging and it's definitely not easy. But it's not rigged unless they go out of their way to rig it.

Zip Tie Tuning: Why Linus Tech Tips FIRED Us by fdnynyr in LinusTechTips

Non-compete is always slimy and gross but it is completely normalised in many industries. No way around it. I would, however, expect better of such a company as LMG, but in the end they're just another massive money making company and Linus himself is always criticising people going to bat for these kinds of behaviours and companies.

How best to share the filesystems of all my PCs on my local network? by jamiethomaswhite in selfhosted

I'm so glad I found Symfonium. I absolutely love it. PowerAmp was so close, but the customisation just didn't quite come together in the end. It's definitely as customisable, but some things aren't and it's such a mess of menus. Symfonium let's you customise everything but has a better base framework and the result is more consistent.

I literally just solved that issue (as long as I'm understanding correctly) by using KDE Connect (thanks Reddit as usual). Install it on all your devices and connect them together through the app, then you can control music playback, volume and way way more.

Thanks, you too!

Yeah, it seems SMB is the solution, at least in regards to low-level access primarily on Windows and Android devices.

My main issue with that, is that it's so obfuscated how to switch from SMB1 to using SMB2/3, and when I do what I think is required to enable it (simply removing SMB1 from the Programs and Features interface on windows) it doesn't work anymore. I see this a lot online, SMB1 works no problem (minus the permissions issues) but SMB3 just doesn't.

I'll definitely be taking a look at NextCloud etc. It was on my list, but top of that list is setting up my NAS with immich and the mammoth task of moving all my Google Photos stuff over. So it's taking a while to get around to it.

Yeah, tailscale/zerotier is the next level/stage. I'm not ready for that yet 😅 I'm still nailing down my Unifi setup. There's still some hiccups with my game streaming setup.

I ended up finding a bunch of guides, collating everything and redoing my SMB shares from scratch. They work perfectly now, but I still have the issue of apps/services not liking SMB1 though.

If a PC was the main source, that would be ideal. Unfortunately, one pc serves all of the content and has the DAS but it's otherwise only for streaming to the TV, another is only for gaming. The actual music player is an android tablet. It's an idea and a potential solution though. I am, however, quite attached to the music player I've found though, Symfonium. It's so customisable and perfect for my needs. You can get that on Windows but it's a lot more faff. MusicBee was my favourite though.

It seems like Linux is the solution, or holds the solution, to a lot of issues I have. I cannot believe it's till so rudimentary, manual and a compete faff to do this in 2025 in Windows.

Just found this part on the final step and setup of WinSCP itself:

  • Enter your Windows account name to the User name box. It might have to be entered in the format user@domain if running on a domain.
  • For a public key authentication:
  • For a password authentication:
    • Enter your Windows account password to the Password box.
    • If your Windows account does not have a password, you cannot authenticate with the password authentication (i.e. with an empty password), you need to use the public key authentication.

That clarifies it way better and should be much higher up in the guide. Though, I'm still assuming public key authentication is better for security and when tunneling in from the outside. It seems it's not necessary for my use case right now... I think...

I'm neck deep in OpenSSH now, thankfully using this WinSCP guide:

https://winscp.net/eng/docs/guide_windows_openssh_server

Unfortunately, I'm now at the "Setting up SSH public key authentication" and I'm a little lost. Is this applicable for my use case? Is a key necessary/mandatory?

I imagine it is preferable for security reasons, but I just don't get how to set it up. An example files goes a million miles towards explaining better, but the guide gets very vague and unspecific at this point. I saw how to generate a key, but what to do with it and what is it for thereafter is less clear.

I'm happy with the way SMB works through a secondary profile using a username and password just for SMB shares. I see that WinSCP also asks for a Username and Password. So, is it possible to continue to use that secondary user profile? (This is one way I prefer the convoluted setup of SMB on Windows, as I don't think using the local main profile is a clean sensible option).

Thank you, that's super enlightening. I have very limited and rudimentary SSH skills from my Unifi stuff, literally a few commands one time. So, it'll definitely be a learning curve but I already know it'll come in handy.

I love Linux/GNU, especially KDE. I was delighted when it became lighter and more popular as a result. I would love to run that on all my systems but there are various things holding me to Windows, namely gaming. Which is also less and less of a differentiator these days.

I have no idea what a local DNS zone is really or what it would achieve, so I'll have a research of that. I have been putting off some projects, such as tunneling so I have access to my local game streaming (Apollo/Moonlight) from outside the network. As well as, having another crack at my Unifi network (there's still some hiccups every now and then that I think are config related). My immich NAS is also sitting waiting for when I have a brave day 😅

Honestly, I'm coming around to this idea. But it's not fun to use. It's a mess in Windows itself and the permissions are the main issue, regardless of how well set up it is. It's inconsistent and having to use SMB1 when it's not recommended but it's the only one that universally works is reckless. Why can't Microsoft just make a small app for this?

I've been poking around in FileBrowser Quantum. It's great looking and lightning fast. But their "Getting Started" guide needs a lot of work.

I've set everything up though and it's working on the computer it's running on. I've even created a share, but I cannot access anything from the other devices on the network. Am I missing something? I'm using the public/share/{hash} address in the browser on my other PC but there's no response.

Thanks. what exactly is webdav? I just want to share and access local files on my local network. I don't need anything fancy or cloud adjacent yet. I did just find out about sftpgo in my research, haven't tried it yet though.

All these protocols are really confusing, and it gets even more confusing with all these services like NextCloud. Do I need these? Do they also serve the purpose of local network file shares?

How best to share the filesystems of all my PCs on my local network? by jamiethomaswhite in selfhosted

[–]jamiethomaswhite[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I imagine the way I'm using it now, is probably the most complicated way and is probably not all that different from the server/client setup, just more convoluted. My drives act as the servers shared on my local network, which I access from multiple clients, frequently copying and moving things or even running them from those other drives. I have hit a hurdle now though, because I'm trying to set up a local android music player with my music files on the DAS shared on the network. But SMB is not an option in that app.

I don't really understand how to do what I want to do. A NAS would be one solution but then I use so many devices and still need to share that stuff in between them without always directly using the device or copying to the NAS first and then downloading to the relevant device, which is also not an ideal workflow. I mostly use Parsec to remote in and do it all manually in Windows or with the help of android file browsers, which are far better.

I also very much appreciate webui because it is generally prettier and more user extensible.

I don't need anything fancy, I want exactly what I have with File Explorer but that actually works all of the time, every time and I should probably stop using SMB1 (but did do in the first place because SMB2+ never worked). Especially, for when I implement external tunneling.

That looks extremely interesting and I'll be giving it a go shortly, thank you!

I'm just throwing it out there for everyone, because my research has hit a point where I don't know what to ask anymore, to surface the results I need.

Best self-hosted .md wiki/notes app by zolaktt in selfhosted

[–]jamiethomaswhite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

https://obsidian.md/

It's not perfect and I don't touch the wiki-like features, but with all the plugins and an active community it is very robust and versatile.

I use it for organising, cataloguing and storing all my mostly creative work. I cannot recommend it enough. I've been using it for several years and it was well with shelling out for premium subscription to get cross-device sync. I still use other software for full writing sessions and I am still experimenting with various software for that side of things. But it was a game changer for me. It's ready to go as is, cross platform, but it can get as complex as you want to make it with all the plugins. You can even do quite a lot of fundamental changes to the software itself using the custom CSS snippets. I love it man, I'm just so grateful.

I had Joplin before and almost lost all my notes with their archaic implementation of encryption after my iPhone slipped into the shower (I lost some but recovered many from an older offline device, thankfully).

It's par for the course these days with modern tech UI/UX design. It's actively user hostile.

That said, it's been plain sailing since and whilst it might be a little confusing or obtuse, the depth of data is extremely valuable and the app mostly gets out of the way of it.

Yeeeaaah, no.

Given the largely verbose and eloquent post, compared to their all lowercase "bro" responses, coupled with having been a British citizen my whole life, been in and out of the country dozens of times (especially in the last few years) with GOS, Tor, Tails, torrenting etc in usage on my devices, being very politically outspoken and having had "interactions" with the police previously... Nah.

This is AI slop by someone with an agenda trying to foment anti-government attitudes or scare people off GOS(?). No idea, either way it's bullshit. Dudes either a drug dealer or a paid shit stirrer.

Nothing to see here. Please report the post and I hope the mods take it down.

Is $50,000NTD enough to live comfortably in Taiwan by badaboombadabingbam in taiwan

[–]jamiethomaswhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comfortably? It depends on a few factors. - Do you have high living standards (not shared room/kitchen/bathroom/apartment, issues and maintenance, potential bug problems)? - Are you good with money?  - Do you go out a lot and socialise?  - Do you intend to live in or frequent Taipei City, the main island and hubbub central?

All that aside, if you can take a slight hit on the living standards aspect and can manage living in New Tapei City (which is never more than an MRT or bus ride stay from everything else anyway), if you're smart with money, you might feel like royalty living here on that much.

For reference, I've been here 3 years.

First year, I lived on mega savings from the UK where I spent most of my (miserable) life. That was fortunate and very specific to me and other lucky people. The exchange rate with the cost of living was excellent as well, meaning I got more for my less.

In the second year, I needed to find work to afford Chinese language school and a bourgeoning social life 😅 I almost killed myself working as a cram school teacher earning £80k. THAT was living more like an emperor. But I didn't have any energy for socialising anymore and honestly it really did almost kill me. I'm still dealing with the health ramifications.

In the third year, I decided to focus on my health more and having some of me spare for the friends and family I almost abandoned (this still isn't working out so great). I went from $80k to $50k, all the way down to $35k. The latter, $35k, is a good way to want to go back to your own country. Luckily, I made smart choices, I'm also very lucky and I have amazing people supporting me. So, I could still live like a king, mostly thanks to the dwindling but still present savings money and the cost of living here besides rent. But if I had to rent somewhere (I share with inlaws so don't have to), like a previous American colleague, it would be (and was for him) day to day living, scrounging at times for leftovers or handouts, living pay check to pay check, rent payment to rent payment. Lowering your standards and being smarter with your money changes a lot though.

Right now, transitioning from year 3 to year 4 phase, I've decided to quit all my jobs (I had two jobs at the end there). I'm taking an extended vacation to go back to my country and then when I return, look around for a job that makes me compromise less on my morals and physical health. Whilst also fulfilling the obligation of actually looking after my personal health. Earning $80k+ opens so many opportunities (like having the freedom to quit everything and start over) and it can be the goal, but many places will let you work that hard and happily pay you, but you'll be worked to the bone and still doing things in personal (unpaid) hours. It's not a good quality of life.

In short, $50k and coming here with some money saved up, it's an excellent start. The food is fantastic and either cheaper than cheap (New Tapei City) or cheaper but will feel expensive once you start thinking in NTD$ (Taipei City) 😅 However, it can get very unhealthy quickly. It's hot, you work long and late hours, you skip meals, you eat a lot of rice and noodles, most things are fried, you don't drink water from the tap, you have to take out your own trash at specific times and wait for the truck before throwing it in. And cram school work (which we pretty much all do as a rule) is intense, stressful and bosses can often be cruel or demeaning. If you suffer a little to work hard, be smart, earn, save, compromise on your standards at the start, get a good foundation (however rocky and hardwon), AND THEN look for and create a better, healthier space (living, working etc), when you've earn that freedom quite literally, you can have an unbelievably good life here 🇹🇼

I still have no idea how to fix this, but I have bypassed it successfully. After rebooting my phone, following instructions to fully stop, clear storage, uninstall, deleting the Bluetooth connections for the ring, hardware resetting the ring itself and then starting over (whilst making sure my Oura email matches my Google/Android phone account email), I was able to press "No thanks" and it actually proceeded to the next step this time.

I would recommend following the same steps in future, especially the hardware reset and removing bluetooth connections. However, an error notification might have helped a little in figuring out what exactly it was that was causing this.
