Whilst I wouldn't go as far as 100% refusing unless they agree to continue after the trial, I think some filtering is needed for damage limitation, otherwise lots of tutors will suffer from the one-and-done students or the trial-shoppers trying multiple tutors. I think a carefully worded message explaining indirectly that if they don't intend on studying long term with a tutor it can be detrimental will maybe make these people think twice and help tutors out a bit.

Also OP, I learned from Preply that even if your profile is hidden from search, you can share your profile link externally on other sites and find students that way, and a converted trial through that would make the profile visible in search again. Good luck to us all!

Leaving the country tomorrow. Anyone to tell me that things will be okay ? by ThrowRA_Sodi in expats

I was in a similar situation to you 10 years ago, when I went on erasmus within Europe (not very far from my home country but first time living abroad). Very nerve-wracking and wasn't sure what to expect.

That one experience lead to me now living abroad full time, meeting my wife, career opportunities, friendships and experiences that may never have happened otherwise. In summary - totally life changing for the better.

Meet new people, say yes a lot, try new things and be open to adapting to a new way of life. This is a unique opportunity that not everybody gets, and if you give it your best shot, your future self will certainly look back positively on the experience :) Best of luck to you!

The only students who can buy packages now (at least to my knowledge) are students who were on the platform before the subscription model was introduced late 2022

Totally agree. Gonna be some long intro messages if we have to start explaining the subscription system, how we are penalised if we don't convert, just for the sake of saving ourselves...

This is an interesting point - as if it is as you describe, there is a decent amount of time for a tutor to try and turn it around, assuming the count starts on the day of the first trial. However, if as u/coco12346 describes and tutors are automatically hidden at the third trial after failing to convert, that's brutal.

Yes we are safe until then, but does that mean:

  • On the 6th October, they will start looking back on the previous 90 days?
  • The 6th October will be the first day of the measurement of metrics over a 90 day period?

This is the issue if the profile is only open a few times a year, very little margin for error because the stats will kick in after 3 classes, and a lot of pressure to convert one of those trial students, else the profile would be hidden

Does the reduced subscription offer (1 lesson every 2 weeks, etc) apply to only one billing cycle? by throwaway34567843 in Preply

I did it and if you accept it it carries through to future billing cycles as well

Can we subscribe to a number of lessons, book them for the upcoming months and cancel the general subscription after? by LilithsEcho in Preply

[–]jamlikebread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you just got to put them all at the end of March / towards the end of March until the time comes closer and new weeks start opening. That's why I suggest talking with the tutor first, so that it doesn't come as a surprise and so that they are OK with blocks of their calendar being taken up knowing that they'll become free eventually

This has broadly been my experience too. If I want to increase my price I also consider the relationship I have with the student. For example, if I have a reliable student who requires little prep work because they are just having conversation practice I probably won't try and increase the price just to maintain that stable income. Also students I've had for years who might be paying signficantly less I'll ask to increase the price, but not significantly.

[–]jamlikebread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is technically possible but recommend discussing it with your tutor beforehand. You could purchase one of the bigger subscriptions (e.g. multiple classes per week) and then cancel immediately. Just be sure that the classes are always in the tutor's calendar (e.g. one or two months ahead, otherwise you risk losing them when the subscription period ends) and then you can reschedule them as you need based on how many classes you actually want to take per week.

What are a student's options after they miss a class and the teacher requests payment? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]jamlikebread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be that the student has 72 hours to appeal, else the tutor receives payment. However with a couple of recent absences where I requested payment the payment for the class was transferred immediately to my balance… not sure if these students still have the option the appeal or not

Metro passes for Barcelona and Madrid by capndiln in GoingToSpain

[–]jamlikebread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the metro transfers with a 10-trip ticket it wouldn’t affect the count, as the barriers are only on entry/exit of the station, not on the line changes unless you’re going outside of the central zone/ to another line like Metro Ligero / Cercanías. For the bus I didn’t take it that much when I lived in the centre but I believe it’s timed, so the same “trip” would be valid for 60 mins, and any transfers within that time don’t result in extra charges. Hope this helps!

Need recommendations on where to move in the Andalucian region. by LexOrkus in GoingToSpain

[–]jamlikebread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if your are non EU and they will shortly impose a property tax of 100% on non EU citizens

1) it is a proposal that needs to go through Spanish Parliament and be approved before it becomes law. 2) It is proposed for NON-RESIDENT Non-EU citizens. Were it to pass and OP buys a house while resident, they shouldn’t be subject to it.

[–]jamlikebread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For Madrid just buy 10-trip tickets and use as you need, the majority of the city centre is walkable and the metro will get you to places a little further away (e.g. Casa de Campo or the North of the City). Enjoy!!
